Back to School, Back to God: A Faith-Filled Reset /created in Canva
Here we are. It is August. August often feels like a second New Year. There are so many new things happening. Many new starts for young and old alike. The calendars fill up quickly as new schedules and new activities are added. This can often lead to organized chaos. At first, everything seems unorganized. Then, as schedules get figured out and activities get juggled, things start to fall into a routine. Without realizing it, the routine pushes out important things, usually faith. Before organizing your life, organize your heart. Back to school time, no matter the age, is time to get back to God for a faith-filled reset!
Reset Your Heart Before Your Schedule
Before you start working on the new schedules to incorporate all of the new activities, examine your relationship with God. Matthew 6:33, “But seek first the kingdom [of God] and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides.” Seeking God first changes everything. Firstly, it changes your perspective in a broad way. It becomes easier to clearly see what your true priorities are.
Secondly, seeking God first helps you to make choices that are right and aligned with your purpose. Oftentimes, circumstances try to force action. When you are seeking God first, you live in greater peace and feel more comfortable taking appropriate time to consider choices before acting. When you are feeling rushed to act, pause. Say a short prayer asking God to guide you and give you a faith-filled reset.
Create Faith-Centered Daily Rhythms
Create faith-centered daily rhythms to help you with your reset. For example, try these ideas:
- Morning prayer-This can even be said before you get out of bed. A simple “Thank you, God, for another day” is a great place to start. There are also plenty of apps and email services you can get.
- Scripture before social media-Before you start mindless scrolling, why not read a Scripture verse? Again, there are many apps available to meet your needs. If you have a physical Bible, use it. It can be something as simple as Philippians 4:4, “Rejoice in the Lord always.”
- Family blessing-This is something I regret not using more as my kids were growing up. It takes very little time to bless your spouse and/or your children before you leave or they leave to begin their day. You can also do it as soon as you get up in the morning. Don’t forget to ask God to bless you as well!
- Gratitude at meal time-Whether you are eating a sit down meal at home, eating out or grabbing food on the run, you can say a prayer of thanksgiving for the food and other blessings bestowed upon you and your family. Do it regularly and it will become a habit that just occurs naturally
Take some time to consider and jot down ideas of things you can easily incorporate into your day to create a more faith-filled day. Importantly, don’t overwhelm yourself by trying to do too much too soon. Start by creating one habit and when that becomes a natural part of your day, add another. If you forget or drop the habit, forgive yourself and start over.
Students Aren’t the Only Ones Beginning Again
Although August generally marks the preparation and start for the new school year, this doesn’t just impact teachers, students and parents. This time to begin again can apply to grandparents, empty nesters, professionals and many businesses. Traffic patterns often shift and some drive times can become longer. Some businesses may become slower during school time hours while others may pick up business before and after school hours.
Take advantage of this time to begin again no matter how it may influence your day. While you take a moment to plan a day’s, a week’s or even a month of activities and appointments, consider how to implement a faith-filled daily rhythm. Commit to doing it and hold yourself accountable.
Rise, Align, and Shine when You Begin Again
Every new season offers a choice. We can rush into our routines relying on our own strength, or we can intentionally begin by placing Christ at the center of our hearts. A true reset is not simply reorganizing a calendar, purchasing school supplies or establishing a new routine. It begins with surrender. It begins by inviting God to lead every step before the first bell rings, the first meeting begins or the first item is checked off your to-do list.
Accordingly, lasting transformation starts from the inside out. I often share this in “Rise. Align. Shine.”:
Rise by remembering whose you are. Before you are a parent, teacher, student, employee or volunteer, you are a beloved child of God. Your worth is not determined by your productivity, your accomplishments or how perfectly you manage life’s demands. Your identity is securely rooted in Christ. When you begin each day from that truth, fear loses its grip, comparison fades and confidence grows; not because of who you are alone, but because of Who walks with you.
Align your heart with God’s will. Ask Him to shape not only your schedule but also your priorities. Invite Him into the ordinary moments: the morning drive to school, the quiet walk into the office, the evening homework struggles, and the family dinner table. These everyday moments become sacred when we intentionally seek His presence. Through prayer, Scripture and quiet moments of listening, God gently redirects our hearts toward what matters most. We discover that peace is not found in having everything under control but in trusting the One who is.
Then, Shine by allowing Christ’s love to overflow into the lives of those around you. Your witness does not require a stage or a microphone. It is found in your patience with a struggling child, your kindness toward a coworker, your encouragement to a friend, your integrity when no one is watching and your willingness to extend grace when it would be easier to judge. As Jesus reminds us in Matthew 5:16, “Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.“
This school year, whether you are sending children into classrooms, returning to work, beginning college, embracing retirement or simply entering another season of life, remember that God is doing something new. Every beginning is an opportunity to grow closer to Him. Every fresh start is an invitation to trust Him more deeply.
Begin Again for a New Ordinary
The excitement of a new school year eventually gives way to ordinary days. The new notebooks become worn, calendars begin to fill and routines settle into place. That is precisely when we need God the most; not only during life’s milestones but also in its everyday rhythms.
Imagine how different this season could be if, instead of simply asking God to bless your plans, you first asked Him to shape them. Imagine beginning each morning with a simple prayer: “Lord, guide my thoughts, my words and my actions today. Help me become more like You.”
A faith-filled reset is not about striving for perfection. It is about returning, day after day, to the One who never stops calling us closer. When we place Christ at the center of our lives, He brings clarity to our decisions, peace to our hearts and purpose to our journey.
As this new season begins, don’t just prepare backpacks, lesson plans, calendars, or schedules. Prepare your heart. Let this be the year you grow deeper in faith, stronger in hope, and bolder in love. Allow God to renew your spirit so that everything you do flows from His grace. Because every new beginning becomes beautiful when it begins with Him:
Rise in the confidence of your identity in Christ.
Align your life with His purpose.
And shine brightly, reflecting His light wherever He leads you.
A Prayer for a New Beginning
Let’s come together in prayer:
Heavenly Father, as we step into this new season, help us begin with You. Fill our hearts with Your peace, our minds with Your wisdom and our lives with Your purpose. Teach us to see each day as an opportunity to grow closer to You and to reflect Your love to everyone we meet. May our homes, classrooms, workplaces and communities become places where Your light shines brightly through us. Give us the courage to rise in faith, align our lives with Your will and shine for Your glory. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
