Begin Again: God’s Grace for Fresh Starts/created in Canva
Many people begin the year with specific goals and hopes for the future. Even though they have great intentions and maybe even great plans, by July (sometimes earlier) some people feel discouraged by unmet expectations. It is important to know that God is not keeping score. You can begin again! After all, you were created flawed yet fabulous!
Remember that there is hope for the second half of the year. If you need to, you can start over. God always provides the opportunity. Lamentations 3:22-23 reminds us, “The LORD’s acts of mercy are not exhausted, his compassion is not spent; They are renewed each morning—great is your faithfulness!” Every day is an opportunity to begin again!
God is a God of New Beginnings
The Bible offers many examples throughout Scripture of beginning again. Peter began again after denial. Because Jesus forgave Peter after his infamous three times of denial and shame, he was restored to a position of leadership so that he could go on to preach the Gospel. Jonah, after running away from God’s mission, facing terrible storms and being swallowed by a large fish, was given the chance to begin again. As well, the story of the Prodigal Son returning home clearly demonstrates the opportunity to begin again. These are just a few of the stories you can find in the Bible. There are many more.
So you can see that God’s story is filled with redemption. He has a plan for His Kingdom. Know that you are no different. You are included in His plan. God is always offering the opportunity to start over. It is up to you to decide to embrace that opportunity and move forward with intention.
Letting Go of What Didn’t Go as Planned
As humans, it can be very difficult when there are unfinished goals, missed opportunities, mistakes and regrets. You may tend to dwell in the “what if” and “what could be,” but to truly reach a place of purpose you need to move forward, to begin again. The past cannot be changed. You can, however, learn from it and alter your plans to move forward. Sometimes you just need to let go of what didn’t work out.
Remember that God invites you to release the burden of perfection. He is inviting you into a relationship. When you reconnect to what matters most, it is easier to understand that you were uniquely created to be amazingly you. Embracing what is yet to come creates the willingness to let go of what may never be. Return to “Let go and let God.” He is there for you.
Mid-Year Reflection and Realignment
As July is coming to an end, it is a great time for a mid-year reflection and realignment. Take time to examine what you have hoped to accomplish for the year. Make sure you consider both personal and professional goals. After all, you are a whole person, not pieces of one put together to create a whole person. Create a list of questions to help you examine where you are. Here are some questions to help you get started:
- What has gone well?
- What needs adjustment?
- What is God inviting you to release?
- What is He calling you to embrace?
- Are you leaning into your God-given gifts?
- Do you feel like something is missing?
You may have already met some goals and others may be right on track. It is just fine if some may be out of reach. Carefully consider how to get back to realignment. Some goals may just no longer make sense. Let those go. Others may require some adjustment on how to reach them. No matter where you are, embrace progress, even if it means letting go.
Small Steps, Big Impact
Ultimately, small steps can lead to a big impact; remember that transformation rarely happens overnight. Social media may create the appearance of overnight success, but that is because most people don’t share their failures and hard work. You can always begin again with one small step.
One prayer can bring comfort, peace and change. A single act of kindness can change a person’s life forever for the better. A small healthy choice can be the beginning of a longer, happier life. One step of obedience can ignite your purpose and lead not only to changing your life but also to changing the lives of many other people. What small step will you take?
Beginning Again With Grace
Ultimately, you need to begin again with Grace. Keep in mind that Grace is not permission to stay stuck. Grace is God’s invitation to move forward. God is continually inviting you to follow Him, to live His plan for you. You don’t begin again alone. God is with you. Accept mistakes, failures, losses and missed opportunities as lessons to learn from. Forgive yourself if you need to and know that God forgives you always. He loves the you that He created you to be!
Although this is a good time to reflect and realign, the calendar does not determine when change is possible. God’s mercy creates a fresh start every morning. Embrace the opportunity to begin again. Pray for support to move forward. You can offer gratitude for the opportunity to begin again and for the gifts you have been given. You are not alone in this journey called life. Today is a good day to begin again. Start now.
Prayer to Begin Again
Let’s offer this prayer to begin again:
Lord, thank You for Your endless mercy and the unique gifts You have given to me. Help me release yesterday’s failures and missed opportunities. Please help me to trust You with today’s opportunities. Give me courage to begin again and the faith to follow where You lead me. Amen.
