God-Given Strengths: You Were Never Meant to Blend In 2026-06-29T09:35:37-05:00 Michele Gunn
Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
Many people hide their unique gifts to avoid criticism. They don’t want to stand out. People believe they need to blend in to belong and feel accepted. They believe they need to be “normal.” /Image created in Gemini for Patheos.
God-given strengths are more than talents. They are the unique combination of your natural abilities, spiritual gifts, personality, experiences, passions and compassion that God uses to accomplish His purposes through you. When you understand your strengths, you stop trying to become someone else and begin faithfully becoming the person God created you to be.
Consider Matthew 5:16, “Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” Know that God created you for a purpose. He has gifted you with specific talents to use as strengths to live that purpose. Let’s talk about how you were never meant to blend in! Just as I state in my book, “Rise. Align. Shine. Living Boldly in Faith, Purpose and Joy,” you were created to shine.
The Pressure to Compare
You have heard me say it before, we are constantly being told how we are inferior, not good enough and far from perfect. Social media is a staple in life in today’s world. With it comes the constant comparison of perceived perfection. Even though individualism is encouraged more than before, there is still a great fear of standing out. We are consistently told how to “be better,” what we should look like and how to blend in.
Many people hide their unique gifts to avoid criticism. They don’t want to stand out. People believe they need to blend in to belong and feel accepted. They believe they need to be “normal.” For years, I tried to become the person I thought others wanted me to be. This stifled living my purpose. It wasn’t until I began understanding how God uniquely created me with my strengths, experiences and heart for encouraging others that I realized my calling wasn’t to imitate someone else’s light, but to faithfully reflect the light God had placed within me. I may appear ordinary, but just like you, I am uniquely created to shine.
What Are God-Given Strengths?
God-Given Strengths: You Were Never Meant to Blend In /created in Canva
God-given strengths are the unique talents, abilities, inner resilience and emotional build you possess, which are granted from God when He created you. These strengths include both tangible, practical skills used to serve others and build His kingdom as well as the internal spiritual fortitude that empowers you through difficult times. Your God-given strengths are not the skills you have acquired through learning and experience, but the foundation of those, or your innate ability, is.
When you are trying to discover what your God-given strengths are, think about what types of things come easily to you with little effort. Consider what brings you joy and energizes you. Also consider what other people come to you for and what they compliment you on. Remember times when you have had successes. What talents came easily to reach those successes? These are all insights into your God-given talents and strengths.
God Creates Uniquely with God-Given Strengths
As an example of how we are uniquely created, reflect on Romans 12:4–8, “For as in one body we have many parts, and all the parts do not have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ and individually parts of one another. Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us exercise them: if prophecy, in proportion to the faith; if ministry, in ministering; if one is a teacher, in teaching; if one exhorts, in exhortation; if one contributes, in generosity; if one is over others, with diligence; if one does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.” Consider how you and your strengths fit into the greater whole and remember that your strengths are gifts..
Consequently, different gifts serve different purposes, so they are all equally needed. One is not more important than another. Diversity reflects God’s creativity. Look around you. See all of the different plants and animals. They all serve a purpose. God created each of them to uniquely serve that purpose. Furthermore, no gift is insignificant. If a gift seems insignificant, it is because we don’t fully understand that gift or its purpose.
Understanding Your God-Given Strengths
It has taken me years to understand my God-Given strengths. No one ever really explained to me how or why I was made. I was only told who to be and what to fix. Similarly, many people have been told comparable things. When you understand you are uniquely made, you begin to understand your purpose to live a joy-filled life. When discovering and defining who God created you to be, consider your natural talents, your spiritual gifts, your personality, your life experiences and in what areas you bring the most compassion. Certainly, these will provide insights to further your understanding of self. Here are three practical reflection questions to get you started on discovery:
- What energizes you?
- What comes naturally?
- Where do others consistently seek your help?
Stop Dimming Your Light
Comparison can kill your growth. Oftentimes, the fear of judgment will stop you from using or developing your God-given strengths. Fear can also dampen your light and keep you playing small. Because that fear of failure is often deeply ingrained, you get stuck in comparison and self-doubt. Similarly, false humility, an insincere display of modesty intended to manipulate others, fish for compliments, or mask underlying pride, also impedes your progress in investing in your God-given strengths.
Remember that the world needs authentic light. The world needs the light that only you can give. That is the way and why you were created. For confirmation and encouragement, read Matthew 5:14–16: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.”
Shine Fully and Faithfully
If there is anything I want you to receive from this column today, it is the knowledge that you were designed intentionally by God. You are uniquely and wonderfully made. When you understand who God created you to be, you stop blending in and begin shining with purpose. You live a joy-filled life unlike any other. You are valuable just because you exist. Because you have been given your unique strengths, you are expected to shine fully and faithfully using those gifts.
In summary, when you embrace your God-given strengths, you no longer need to compete with someone else’s calling. You can rise above comparison, align your life with God’s purpose, and shine with the light He placed within you from the very beginning. You were never meant to blend in, you were created to glorify Him by becoming fully who He created you to be.
Let’s pray together for knowledge, courage, confidence, and faithful living:
Dear Loving Father,
Thank you for my God-given gifts and talents that have become my strengths. Help me to know them, understand them and use them according to Your purpose for me. Help me to have the courage and confidence to live my purpose through my strengths. Guide me to live my part of the Body, praising You and worshipping You with my thoughts, words and actions. Father, I need You. You strengthen me. I love You.
I ask this in the Name of Jesus.
Amen.
