Sweetest Day: Christ’s Love in Everyday Acts/created in Canva
My husband and I were going to get married on Sweetest Day in 1989. When we went to book the church, it was already taken. So we booked the following Saturday. We later learned that it was the feast day in the Catholic Church for Saints Simon and Jude, the patron saints of lost causes. It was fitting in a funny way, given that everything about our wedding seemed to go wrong! But that’s a story for another day.
Today, I want to focus on Sweetest Day and what it truly means. It’s a reminder to share Christ’s love through small, everyday acts of kindness and sweetness.
The Sweet Roots of a Kind Tradition
Sweetest Day began in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1922 when a group of candy makers decided to distribute candy and gifts to the poor, the elderly, and the forgotten. While many think of it today as a “mini Valentine’s Day,” its original purpose was rooted in compassion and giving, spreading a bit of sweetness to those who needed it most.
As Christians, that spirit of generosity echoes the very heart of Jesus. “We love because He first loved us.” (1 John 4:19) Our love for others is simply a reflection of the divine love we’ve already received.
Taste and See the Sweetest of God’s Goodness
When we experience God’s goodness, we can’t help but want to share it. A kind word, a comforting hug, a small gesture are all ways we let others “taste” His love. God’s goodness is not something to hoard; it’s meant to overflow from our hearts into the lives of those around us. Just as the psalmist invites us, “Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the stalwart one who takes refuge in Him.” (Psalm 34:9)
Sweetness in Christian Love
Paul’s letter to the Ephesians reminds us: “Be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another as God has forgiven you in Christ.” (Ephesians 4:32) Kindness is not merely polite behavior; it is a holy act. When we choose compassion over criticism, or forgiveness over resentment, we become living reflections of Christ’s love. The sweetness of a believer is not found in empty gestures but in sincerity, gentleness and grace-filled presence.
Think about how you are living out Christ’s love everyday. Can people see it in you and experience it through you? How do you witness it through others? Pay attention today and take note how your actions and words reflect the love of Christ.
Being the Sweetest of Sweet
Everyday life offers endless opportunities to sprinkle sweetness into the world. Here are some ways to share sweet kindness every day:
- Encouraging words: Speak life into someone’s day. Be positive. Support them, give them an uplifting compliment.
- Thoughtful gestures: Send a card, buy coffee for a coworker or check on a friend. Little acts of kindness offer a big reward for the receiver as well as for the giver.
- Listening with love: Sometimes, the sweetest gift is your attention. In today’s busy world, make time to be truly present for someone. Choose one person a day, even if only for five minutes.
- Sharing faith naturally: Offer prayer, hope, or a simple “God bless you.” Look for opportunities to bless others with your faith.
Even the smallest act can leave a heavenly, sweet taste in someone’s life. Be the reason that someone smiles today. You will find that it will catch on and spread to others.
The Ripple of Kindness
We may never see the full impact of a kind word or deed, but God does. A single act of kindness can spark a chain reaction, bringing healing, comfort and even faith to others. Love multiplies when it is shared. Our mission as followers of Christ is not to make grand gestures, but to live daily with hearts attuned to the needs around us. Be the positive impact in someone else’s life. You will find that people who are encouraged and supported will encourage and support others.
A Personal Challenge: Be the Sweetest
This week, choose one sweet act of kindness. Visit someone who feels forgotten. Compliment a stranger. Forgive someone you’ve been holding resentment toward. Leave an encouraging note or Scripture for someone to find. Let the Holy Spirit guide you to be someone’s unexpected sweetness today. Listen for God to speak to you or nudge you to act or speak to someone. When we are open to the will of God, He will guide our way.
Transformation Through Love
“Pleasing words are a honeycomb, sweet to the taste and invigorating to the bones.” (Proverbs 16:24) This Scripture passage speaks to the love of Christ that transforms not only those we serve but also our own hearts. When we choose kindness, we align ourselves with God’s heart and invite His joy into our daily walk. Sweetness is not weakness. It’s a strength refined by grace. Be open to it.
Pray for God to Fill You with Sweetness
Lord Jesus, thank You for filling our lives with the sweetness of Your love. Inspire us to extend that sweetness to others through kindness, encouragement and compassion. May our small acts of love point others to Your eternal goodness. Amen.
