There’s so much news related to Palestine and Israel lately – IAK offers a concise, reliable summary that will keep you up-to-date,

Scenes of the destruction that Israel brought upon Gaza City during the 2023-2026 (and ongoing) genocidal war.

every day. Full disclosure: I work at IAK, writing the Daily Update every day. We are a nonprofit. Our only goal is to get more Americans informed about how Israel spends American tax dollars, in hopes that together we can end financial support for Israel. ISRAELI MEDIA: Israel to close West Bank, Gaza crossings for October 7 remembrance ceremonies, COGAT says: (COGAT=Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories) During the closure, passage through crossings in the West Bank will be permitted only in humanitarian, medical, and other exceptional cases, subject to COGAT approval. The Gaza Strip crossings will also be closed on both days, and humanitarian aid will not enter the enclave. “It should be emphasized,” COGAT adds, “that the closure of the crossings on these dates is not expected to have any impact on the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.*.

*NOTE: This COGAT statement is wrapped in layers of irony: Israel has created a situation in Gaza in which nearly every person is heavily reliant on humanitarian aid – blocking aid to them is the height of cruelty. Israel agreed, in the October 2025 ceasefire deal, to flood Gaza with at least 600 truckloads of aid per day – but the average amount has been about 108 per day (as of August 31, 2026). COGAT is probably not far off when it claims that two days of closure won’t have any impact on the situation in Gaza: a two-day vacation for Israeli crossing personnel will make an already-horrific situation only marginally worse.Israel has violated nearly all of the terms of the ceasefire under Trump’s 20-point deal. All military operations were supposed to be suspended, but Israel has continued to attack, killing over 1,445 Palestinians since the ceasefire began; in addition to humanitarian aid, Israel was supposed facilitate the rehabilitation of infrastructure (water, electricity, sewage), of hospitals and bakeries, and allow the entry of necessary equipment to remove rubble and open roads – none of these commitments have been fulfilled; the Rafah crossing was supposed to be opened for the thousands awaiting medical evacuation – but only a fraction have been able to leave; Israel was supposed to gradually withdraw from Gaza – instead, it is holding more of Gaza than before – going from 53% to approaching 70% (with possible plans for 100%).As a de facto occupier of Gaza, Israel is obligated under the law of armed conflict to ensure that the occupied civilian population is provided with supplies essential to their survival, including basic food and medical supplies as well as clothing, bedding and means of shelter.

If you are unfamiliar with the issue of Palestine and Israel, it’s time to start learning – it has become the defining justice issue of our time, and a pivotal issue in US politics.

The best place to start is here, at If Americans Knew. It’s objectively a great source because we search dozens of reliable (non-mainstream media) websites for authentic news coverage, and provide headlines and summaries of important stories (with links and critical context). It’s easy to jump in without getting overwhelmed or feeling lost!

I invite you to subscribe to my newsletter. I write about the Palestine and Israel issue regularly, and other issues relevant to progressives or those considering becoming progressive. About Kathryn Shihadah

I was raised as a conservative Christian, and was perfectly content to stay that way – until the day my stable, predictable world was rocked. A curtain was pulled back on conservative Christianity, and instead of ignoring the ugliness I saw, I confronted it. I began to ask questions I never thought I’d ask, and found answers I’d never expected. Old things began to fall away, and – behold! – the new me has come. What a gift to be a new, still-evolving creation. I found out that it’s better to look at the world through Progressive Lenses, with Grace-Colored Glasses. You can read more about the author here.
