Are you smarter than Tucker Carlson? – race and the Supreme Court 2022-02-03T08:41:09-05:00 Kathryn Shihadah

Tucker Carlson spoke last week Wednesday, January 26, on the subject, “Biden only talks about skin color” (video and transcript here). This bold, brash newscaster reads his teleprompter with confidence as usual, ready to dish on all the secret plans that progressives have for destroying the United States.

He knows that progressives don’t want what’s best for all of us – they’re trying to destroy white folks. He wants to destroy progressives before they destroy white America.

He applied this theme to the subject of the next Supreme Court nominee, instructing Fox viewers about the stupidity of President Biden’s plan to appoint a black woman to the position.

It’s incumbent on all Americans to think. To scrutinize the opinions of our leaders (Tucker Carlson is a leader of the Republican party in a way, a thought leader, an influencer) and verify their correctness before we adopt them as our own.

Let’s look at Tucker’s argument against appointing a black woman and see if he’s right – or if we’re smarter than he is.

TUCKER: So what are they going to do with that seat? We don’t need to guess, Joe Biden was very clear about his plans nearly two years ago, as he was running for President. He didn’t tell us what he was going to do about Covid or foreign policy or the economy…

WHAT DO YOU THINK, READER? Is it possible that Joe Biden didn’t make any campaign promises relating to Covid, foreign policy, or the economy in the days prior to the election?

Of course he did! Perhaps Tucker just forgot.

TUCKER:…but he was very precise about the Supreme Court. Here is Biden in March of 2020 on the debate stage at CNN. (Tape rolls)

BIDEN: I am committed to it that if I’m elected President and have an opportunity to appoint someone to the Courts, it will be — I’ll appoint the first black woman to the courts. My Cabinet, my administration will look like the country and I commit that I will in fact, appoint — pick a woman to be Vice President.

TUCKER: “I will appoint a black woman to the Supreme Court,” that was Biden’s promise, all right. But which black woman exactly? Biden didn’t tell us. Biden didn’t mention the Supreme Court nominee’s legal qualifications or judicial philosophy or ability to perform one of the most important jobs in the country. He didn’t even tell us she was a nice person.

WHAT DO YOU THINK, READER? Do presidential candidates name the Supreme Court nominees that they have in mind – during a campaign?

Of course not.

WHAT DO YOU THINK? If a presidential candidate doesn’t mention the qualifications (or niceness) of a nominee, does that mean he doesn’t care whether they’re qualified (or nice)?

Of course it doesn’t.

TUCKER: All [Biden] said was she is going to be black, and she’s going to be female, because to him, that’s all that matters. You almost got the impression that Joe Biden believes all black women are the same, they’re identical.

WHAT DO YOU THINK, READER? If Biden only told us that his nominee will be black and female, does that mean those are his only requirements?

WHAT DO YOU THINK? Is it likely that Biden thinks all black women are “identical”?

Ridiculous.

TUCKER: It’s possible we have all marinated for so long in the casual racism of affirmative action that it seems normal now to reduce human beings to their race…But Joe Biden, all Joe Biden can talk about is your skin color. Patronizing? It doesn’t even begin to describe what this is. This is exactly why decent Americans hated segregation. It dehumanized people.

(Did you notice how Tucker called affirmative action “casual racism” offhandedly, as though it’s an established fact? That’s a topic that deserves its own post.)

WHAT DO YOU THINK, READER? Here is a white guy who doesn’t like to talk about skin color, and he doesn’t like other people to talk about it either. Do you think black Americans liked Biden’s promise to appoint a black woman to the Supreme Court, or did it make them cringe?

It looks like a large number were very happy.

WHAT DO YOU THINK? Might Biden’s promise make black women feel dehumanized – or seen? Might they have said, “hey, don’t think about my skin color,” or “finally, someone noticed my skin color”?

WHAT DO YOU THINK? Is it possible that Tucker has forgotten how many Americans fought to keep this country segregated, how unpopular the civil rights movement was – particularly among Republicans and Christians?

TUCKER: Nobody wins in identity politics. The people designed to help are completely dehumanized and patronized, reduced to colors rather than human beings, and in some cases the rest of us get really crappy service because the best people aren’t being chosen. That’s just true. Ability is the only criterion that matters. Skin color is irrelevant.

WHAT DO YOU THINK, READER? When President Biden announces his choice for Supreme Court justice, is it likely she will feel dehumanized and patronized, or gratified and proud?

WHAT DO YOU THINK? Will Biden have to sacrifice quality in order to appoint a black woman? Will America have to put up with “crappy service” from the Supreme Court because of her? Would a black female justice bring any valuable perspective to the court – a perspective to which a white male has no access? If our government is obligated to look out for the common welfare, should it not actively seek to represent its people?

The United States has had one hundred fifteen (115) Supreme Court justices since 1789. Let’s look at their demographics and compare them to the actual demographics of the country they’re supposed to represent:

One hundred and eight Supreme Court justices have been white males – that’s 94% (vs. 38% of the population).

Two justices have been African American – that’s 1.7% (vs. 14.2% of the population).

One justice is Hispanic – that’s 0.8% (vs. 18% of the population).

Five justices have been women – 4.3% (vs. 50% of the population).

Unless there is something inherently inferior about people of color or women, the US absolutely needs a woman of color on the Supreme Court. The last thing we need is another white dude.

How smart do you have to be to figure that out? Smarter than Tucker Carlson, apparently.
