According to his Twitter profile, Theodore Shoebat is a self-proclaimed “Christian Militant” and “Crusader.” In his most recent video, he goes through a thought experiment explaining how we moderate Christians are partly to blame in the problem of our secular society because we are not eradicating the cancer of homosexuality, communism, and Islam from our “collective” Christian body.

The calm and calculating demeanor of Mr. Shoebat, coupled with his clear desire to outlaw anything that does not conform to his particular version of Christianity is alarming. He is convinced that his position is the only reasonable one and that it has “evolved,” suggesting that his beliefs are rational and justified when they are far from that. His beliefs are terrifyingly extremist and put him in the category of ISIS, a group that he lambasts in many of his videos.

Shoebat uses the example of Jeffrey Dahmer to explain why homosexuality should be outlawed. For him, there is a causal link between homosexuality, murder, abortion and cannibalism. The irony is that he demonstrates this perversion of logic and faith with the exact level of coldness and calculation often demonstrated by serial killers such as Jeffrey Dahmer.

I am sure this level of insanity has always been present in the faith. But with the advent of social media, every crazy person is capable of gathering followers unto himself and creating a movement that presents a threat to us all.

Let’s be clear on a few important things: Christ never instructed us to use the force of law or violence to spread the Gospel. Murder in the name of Jesus is still murder and is not justifiable legally or spiritually. Oppression in the name of Jesus is still oppression and is not justifiable legally or spiritually.

When we relinquish to love of Christ in exchange for forwarding our religious agenda, we have betrayed the very essence of Christ. Christianity without the love of Christ is as dangerous as any Islamic extremist or terrorist.

Ironically, Shoebat is far more a “cancer” to Christianity than anyone he lists in this video. He is advocating for a dictatorial, authoritarian and totalitarian society that will make any philosophy, religion, or orientation that does not conform to his particular brand of Christianity illegal and potentially punishable by death. Besides the disgusting nature of his entire position, Shoebat fails to realize that creating a society like this places Christianity at the same risk of eradication. Violating the rights of those with whom we may disagree ultimately undermines our own rights.

But for people like Shoebat, their obsession with homosexuality requires they purge it at all costs. Thou dost protest too much, Shoebat. Thou dost protest too much.
