Dueling Christian coverage, or Ira Glass vs. National Journal
Last updated on: June 5, 2013 at 11:14 am By mollie
Above is a nice little snippet of an Ira Glass interview. Interview of Ira Glass, I should say. The popular host of public radio’s This American Life reflects on why the show does so much good coverage of Christians. It’s because the media do such a bad job of covering them otherwise, he says. He says the Christians he knows and works with — including the “fundamentalists” — are nothing like how Christians are portrayed in the media. I knew... Read more

How should journalists fight back against sacred jargon?
Last updated on: June 4, 2013 at 7:51 pm By Joe Carter
Yesterday, CNN ran a feature highlighting the faith of members of a Bible group the meets on the PGA Tour. The article itself is well-done and provides an superb model for how to address religion in sports. Job one: let the athletes speak for themselves and quote them accurately. Out of 175 lines in the article, 91 are direct quotes from the members of the Bible group talking about their faith. But the commendatory approach taken by CNN also provides... Read more

We’ve found the next enemy: adoptive families
Last updated on: June 4, 2013 at 4:31 pm By mollie
When my husband and I began the adoption process, we had no idea how controversial it would become. There are many stories being written these days harshly critiquing Christians who adopt children. Before we look at one of those stories, a quick aside. When we went through adoption training a few weeks ago, one of our instructors suggested that we not watch any Lifetime moves during the process. Why? Well, here’s a synopsis of a Lifetime channel offering from last... Read more

Hey Washington Post: There’s only one (gay) Islam? Really?
Last updated on: June 4, 2013 at 1:50 pm By tmatt
Anyone who has been paying attention to debates about the future of the Boy Scouts of America knows that, when it comes to issues linked to homosexuality, there is no one “religious” perspective that journalists need to cover. Even within individual religious traditions — such as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or the Roman Catholic Church — there are people who read the same texts and come to slightly different, or glaringly different, conclusions. On the Christian... Read more

Evangelicalism is political, but not a political movement
Last updated on: June 3, 2013 at 7:14 pm By Joe Carter
How many political issues do American evangelicals care about? Apparently, just two: abortion and same-sex marriage. At least that is the impression you’d get if you read about evangelicals in the mainstream press. Earlier today, CNN updated their “Fast Facts” page on former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty. Aside from general biographical information and a timeline of his career, the page includes only three “Other Facts,” including this one: Evangelical Christian who opposes abortion and same-sex marriage. Australia’s Herald Sun describes... Read more

Pod people: Concerning the IRS and the God squads
Last updated on: June 3, 2013 at 12:27 pm By tmatt
It’s a basic fact of life in American politics that nothing fires up the non-profit sector on the political right like the election of a strong president whose voter base is on the religious, cultural and political left. Thus, it’s no surprise that the election of President Barack Obama, an articulate believer from the heart of liberal mainline Protestantism, created a boom in activism on the religious, cultural and political right. That’s the way the world works. Of course, the... Read more

A reader passed along this gem from the Associated Press that begins: SAN FRANCISCO DE YARE, Venezuela — The descendants of African slaves donned masks and bright red costumes as they danced through the streets of this small Venezuelan town on Thursday for its annual commemoration of Corpus Cristi. Young men beat drums and shook maracas as the “devils” paraded through the streets and people gathered to celebrate Corpus Cristi, a Roman Catholic holiday celebrating the transformation of the body... Normalizing nihilism: Euthanasia and the Daily Mirror
Last updated on: June 3, 2013 at 2:46 pm By geoconger
A story in Thursday’s Daily Mirror about the first English patient suffering from dementia to have traveled to the Dignitas clinic in Zurich to kill himself by physician assisted suicide has prompted several “me too” stories in the British press. On Friday the Telegraph, Independent, BBC, Daily Mail and Times followed the Daily Mirror’s lead and reported that an 83 year old man with early dementia had killed himself at Dignitas seven weeks ago. The Sunday Times first reported this story in March, however the Daily Mirror splashed the... Read more

The theology in all those Father Greeley sex scenes
Last updated on: June 2, 2013 at 8:12 pm By tmatt
Much like his friend (historian, not theologian) Martin Marty, the prominent sociologist (not theologian) Father Andrew Greeley of Chicago lived a long and astonishingly productive career in which he had few unpublished thoughts. This is not a man whose rambunctious life would be easy to cover in a simple newspaper obituary. He was also one of the quickest and wittiest people I have ever interviewed in my life. I think it’s also crucial to note that, while most articles about... Read more

Churches dumping Boy Scouts over gay policy … or not?
Last updated on: June 1, 2013 at 4:03 pm By Bobby Ross Jr.
Godbeat pro Bob Smietana wrote a story this week exploring whether churches will keep sponsoring Boy Scout troops or drop their affiliation given the organization’s new gay-friendly membership policy. It’s a timely, logical religion angle. (Others who have covered that angle include ABC News and the Birmingham News.) The lede: For the Rev. Ernest Easley, the decision to cut ties with the Boy Scouts was simple. The Bible says homosexuality is a sin. The Boy Scouts do not. “We are not... Read more
