Reuters editors read mind of Pope Francis on abortion
Last updated on: January 14, 2014 at 3:03 pm By tmatt
So, GetReligion readers, it is time for short religion-news quiz. Raise your hands (or click comment) if you have read the following Pope Francis quotation, or a variation on it, in the past year or so. “We cannot insist only on issues related to abortion, gay marriage and the use of contraceptive methods. This is not possible. … The teaching of the church … is clear and I am a son of the church, but it is not necessary to... Read more

WPost whoppers about the Muslim Brotherhood
Last updated on: January 14, 2014 at 5:13 pm By geoconger
Claims of bias and inaccurate reporting have dogged the Western press’s coverage of Egypt since the ouster of Hosni Mubarak. A story in this week’s Washington Post entitled “In Egypt, many shrug as freedoms disappear” will do little to restore confidence. The article eschews the classical news story format in favor of an impressions and perceptions style. Its lede states: The charges are often vague. The evidence is elusive. Arrests occur swiftly, and the convictions follow. And there is little... Read more

NYTimes late to the story on ‘Women at the Pulpit’
Last updated on: January 14, 2014 at 3:27 pm By Mark Kellner
Proving that when there isn’t really news, one can perhaps manufacture some, The New York Times is, once again, late to the story on a topic of religious significance. When last GetReligion examined the Times‘ timing on a story, George Conger found the Gray Lady, as the paper is known, to have just discovered the rise of Calvinism in non-Calvinist precincts — a good five years of so after many other media outlets had done so. Now, the Times has made another one of... Read more

What M.Z. said: Doctor Who vs. Jesus at BuzzFeed?
Last updated on: January 13, 2014 at 12:04 pm By tmatt
First things first: Yes, I am a big Doctor Who fan. Thus, I find the role that the whole “Whovian” phenomenon plays in the following M.Z. Hemingway post to be fascinating, to say the least. Nevertheless, suffice it to say that I think our beloved Divine Mrs. M.Z. nails this one and, yes, this is clearly a case of serious religious content giving some journalists sweaty palms. So, I’ll simply say, “What M.Z. said.” And does the top of her... Read more

UK journo’s ‘General’ Salvation Army confusion
Last updated on: January 13, 2014 at 10:05 am By Mark Kellner
London’s Telegraph newspaper generally does a serviceable job when reporting on religion, but a recent commentary news article contrasting the beliefs of The Salvation Army (they prefer the article capitalized) with those of the rest of Protestantism and those of the Roman Catholic Church, titled, “The Pope and the Salvation Army,” accomplishes nothing, in my view, as much as muddying the waters. One wonders what Pope Francis (shown above greeting General Linda Bond, who retired in June 2013 as the movement’s international... Read more

Concerning that strange, lost Sports Illustrated Tebow epic
Last updated on: January 12, 2014 at 10:00 pm By tmatt
We are running out of football Sundays in this National Football League season, so I had better dig deep into my tmatt file of GetReligion guilt and write as short a post as possible about that amazing Tim Tebow feature that Sports Illustrated ran back before Christmas. Are there any GetReligion readers out there who subscribe to Sports Illustrated these days? If so, then you surely saw that massive piece entitled “The Book of Tebow.” I mean, this was a... Read more

NYTimes mostly ‘gets it’ on German schools and Islam
Last updated on: January 7, 2019 at 4:08 pm By Mark Kellner
A few days ago, George Conger took to this space to “bury” The New York Times for suddenly noticing the rise of Calvinism in unlikely Protestant venues, such as (Southern) Baptist churches. Today, I’d like to congratulate the Times for, mostly, “getting it” when it comes to Germany’s public schools and religious instruction, in this case about Islam. Here’s the top of that report: FRANKFURT — For the first time, German public schools are offering classes in Islam to primary school students... Read more

So what is the new ‘On Faith’ about, in these early days?
Last updated on: January 11, 2014 at 9:18 pm By tmatt
Through the years, your GetReligionistas tended to offer rather mixed views of the “On Faith” project at The Washington Post. First of all, it had tremendous potential as a religion-news hub, in part because of the presence of several writers in the Post newsroom — in a variety of departments — who clearly were interested in religion topics and showed ability when dealing with religious subjects. I mean, in addition to the obvious scribes, I would put entertainment writer Hank... Read more

Really? Editors who don’t know about the ‘reindeer rules’?
Last updated on: January 10, 2014 at 12:27 pm By tmatt
Sorry about this, folks, but we need to take a quick glance back at a lingering “Christmas wars” story from 2013. You would think, by this time, that everyone within a light year or two of a newsroom and/or public courthouse would have heard of the whole “reindeer rules” battles linked to public officials allowing the erection of Christmas creches (or Menorahs) on public property. If you want a quick refresher on some related issues, check out this recent post... Read more

God, faith, Jahi McMath and church (or not)
Last updated on: January 10, 2014 at 10:56 am By Tamie Ross
I can’t remember the last time I became so engrossed in a story. Perhaps it’s because I also have a teenage daughter (who, by the way, also is interested). Maybe it’s the unprecedented attention, or the opportunity to educate myself about an issue I had not previously considered: whole brain death and all its scientific and physical ramifications. More likely, it’s the passion on both sides and the way people of faith everywhere are reacting so emotionally to the case.... Read more
