Tweeting Mohammad

Last updated on: February 4, 2014 at 9:09 pm   By geoconger

The Mohammad cartoon controversy has resurfaced over the past week with a flutter over a tweet. The British press appears to have come down on the side of Maajid Nawaz. Newspaper articles, opinion pieces and television chat shows have defended his right to share a cartoon depicting Jesus and Mohammad. But they have also ceded the moral high ground to his opponents — Islamist extremists — by declining to publish a copy of the cartoon that has led to death... Read more

ESPN spots a ghost in the Seattle-Russell Wilson lovefest

Last updated on: February 2, 2014 at 1:54 pm   By tmatt

Some GetReligion readers may have noticed that there is a big football game later today. One of the teams involved in the Super Bowl this year is the Seattle Seahawks and, as always, the team’s quarterback — in this case second-year starter Russell Wilson — is getting quite a bit of attention, for a variety of reasons. First of all, Wilson is short by NFL standards, standing only 5-foot-11. Second, he is one of those guys who walks into a... Read more

Concerning AP and the Vatican’s ‘glass ceiling’ for women

Last updated on: February 1, 2014 at 12:50 pm   By tmatt

Your GetReligionistas received several angry emails this past week about the following Associated Press story, each of them triggered by a single unattributed term in the piece. In The Washington Post, this piece ran under the following headline: Pope: Women should play expanded role in Church Nothing unusual there of course, unless you, like me, were surprised to see the Post copy desk go with an upper-case “C” on the word Church, which is Catholic tradition but not AP style.... Read more

New bishop in Harrisburg: One story, one side, one problem

Last updated on: January 31, 2014 at 5:32 pm   By tmatt

OK, gentle readers, once again I need to stress that the following post on a recent story in The Patriot-News (Harrisburg, Pa.) focuses on a journalism issue in this story, not the tensions centering on the appointment of a particular Catholic bishop to a particular post in the American hierarchy. This post is also not a commentary on what Catholic leaders have or have not done about the decades of sexual abuse of children and teen-agers by clergy or the... Read more

Indiana family: Demons, possession and exorcism, oh my!

Last updated on: January 31, 2014 at 1:57 pm   By Tamie Ross

It’s difficult, if not impossible, to separate the subject of a story from its journalistic merits. You can try, of course. You can look for proper attribution and treatment, context and clarity. Fairness. But when your head still can’t get around the topic by the story’s end, something still might be missing. In this case, I suppose it’s the why. And I’ll explain why in just a bit. The story I’m referencing is the Indianapolis Star’s piece earlier this week headlined... Read more

Rolling Stone thinks it <3's this pope (plus, Mark signs out)

Last updated on: January 31, 2014 at 11:06 am   By Mark Kellner

For reasons probably more associated with my age than anything else, the old Dr. Hook song, “(On the) Cover of the Rolling Stone,” which equated placement on the front of rock’s top magazine with true accomplishment in life, ran through my mind when I first learned that Pope Francis would get pride-of-place in the magazine’s Feb. 13 issue. The comparisons with Dr. Hook (who eventually got their cover) end there, however. This piece is pretty much an early Valentine to its subject.... Read more

Read this story and weep! But ask a few more questions

Last updated on: January 30, 2014 at 8:42 pm   By tmatt

Every now and then, I receive private emails, or emails sent through our contact link, that sound something like this: So why aren’t you guys writing about this story? You afraid to or are you just too prejudiced or only interested in stories that allegedly attack conservative Christians. Then the email will include a link to a news story — almost all of them perfectly valid — that talks about an event or a subject in which a minority religious... Read more

Scoring spiritual points before Super Bowl Sunday

Last updated on: January 30, 2014 at 1:01 pm   By Tamie Ross

Every year about this time, we face a blitz of profile stories of coaches, athletes, owners, fans and even pets preparing to square off on Super Bowl Sunday (I’m a huge fan of Puppy Bowl, by the way). The big story in advance of the 2014 human installment: the frigid temperatures and whether or not the Seattle Seahawks vs. Denver Broncos matchup can attract a proper crowd within the confines of New Jersey’s undomed MetLife Stadium. Second to that, we’re... Read more

Now who was that Joseph guy in the old story from Genesis?

Last updated on: January 30, 2014 at 9:36 am   By tmatt

Former GetReligionista Brad Greenberg passed along this interesting item from Twitter, which barely requires commentary of any kind. However, since commentary is what we do here, let’s start off with a bit of biblical context for this amazing correction from The New York Times. This famous story from the book of Genesis is offered here with no implied connection whatsoever to current economic conditions here in the United States of America or anywhere else. Honest. The great Gray Lady brought... Read more

Pod people: Memory and revolution in Kiev

Last updated on: January 30, 2014 at 7:08 am   By geoconger

All Ukraine, All the time is not our moto at GetReligion. Though you may be excused for thinking it might be as tmatt and I have knocked out a number of stories looking at the reporting coming out of Kiev this week. I returned to Kiev once more in this week’s Crossroads podcast. I spoke with Issues, Etc. host Todd Wilken about the religion angle to the protests in the Ukraine, arguing that the demonstrations were not intelligible without reference... Read more
