Is it legal to let St. Patrick be St. Patrick? (Plus MZ zinger)
Last updated on: March 17, 2014 at 6:26 pm By tmatt
I guess that the crucial question — at this moment in time — is whether St. Patrick’s Day parades have anything to do with St. Patrick. In other words, are these events connected, in any meaningful way, with Catholic tradition, doctrine and history? I know that, in the past, it has been easier to argue that these parades — especially in America’s major urban centers in the Northeast and upper Midwest — have been testimonies to Irish culture, pride and... Seeking “Help!” on five venerable world religions
Last updated on: March 17, 2014 at 12:51 pm By Richard Ostling
JAEDE ASKS: I need to know the founder, area of the world it’s in, what their holy book is called and their holidays, for Jainism, Sikhism, Taoism, Confucianism and Shinto. THE RELIGION GUY ANSWERS: Jaede headlined this item “Help!!” and was probably sweating over some school exam or term paper so this comes too late. Nonetheless, a sketch of these five Asian creeds might be informative since they’re lesser-known than the much larger Hinduism and Buddhism. The Guy is grateful... Read more

Bubbles, Lutherans and the Wall Street Journal
Last updated on: March 17, 2014 at 9:25 am By Jim Davis
Can colored soap bubbles blow up church attendance? Can giant crossword puzzles spell success? If you said “Wow, what great ideas!”, not only will you get a big hug from the Lutheran bishop of New York — you just might be Wall Street Journal material. Yes, that Wall Street Journal. The staid, reserved chronicle of conventional urbanity gets all rah-rah over some of the wilder attempts by Bishop Robert Alan Rimbo, of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, to bring... Dominican posts handy guide to Pope Francis press myths
Last updated on: March 16, 2014 at 5:25 pm By tmatt
Every now and then a scribe at some other weblog (and we’re not just talking about once-and-always GetReligionistas such as M.Z. Hemingway) writes what amounts to a perfect GetReligion post. I mean, we may as well stick a guest byline on these things and put them right online here. This is not one of those cases — but it’s very close. In case you haven’t noticed, the mainstream press has pretty much gone crazy in the past week or so... Read more

AP sees the Catholic abuse scandal everywhere
Last updated on: March 15, 2014 at 8:56 pm By geoconger
The news of the election of Archbishop Stanislaw Gadecki of Poznan as president of the Polish Catholic Bishops’ Conference has me scratching my head and asking myself “What were they thinking?” I have nothing against Archbishop Gadecki. In fact I know little about the man. And after reading the story from the Associated Press you dear reader will know even less. The rolling of eyes and gnashing of teeth (it didn’t reach the rending of garments level of distress) I... Read more

Did Satan cast a spell on Associated Press copy desk?
Last updated on: March 14, 2014 at 11:27 am By tmatt
Over the past decade, more and more hoops fanatics have decided that ESPN is ruining college basketball and even the development of young players in the NBA. What does this have to do with that horrid Associated Press story (original text still online at The Washington Post) about the Susan B. Anthony List fundraising dinner? Hang on. I promise I will get to that shortly. That anti-ESPN theory states that young hoops gods are now so interested in getting their... Read more

Funny, that rainy day is here — complete with dance steps
Last updated on: March 14, 2014 at 9:43 am By Jim Davis
Honestly, I thought I was reading some stray chapter from the New Agey Celestine Prophecy the other day. All the telltale blemishes were there: mystical experiences, wise native Americans, energy from within, persecution by white folks, a strange lack of factual material. But no, it was a long-form feature in the otherwise respectable Los Angeles Times. The topic was rain dancing, an attempt to relieve the years-long California drought. The story was part of the Times’ “Column One” series: prime... Read more

Pod people: There really are two sides to every story, folks
Last updated on: March 13, 2014 at 10:14 pm By Tamie Ross
The stories we critique here at GetReligion usually fall into one of two categories. First we have the good stories: well-written pieces that are fair, balanced, properly sourced and complement the outlets they represent. The second category is comprised of the opposite kind of story, the poorly written ones. These pieces have problems such as ghosts, bias, unexplored angles, poor attribution, inadequate sourcing, vague terminology, etc. The possibilities are endless. Which would you think would be the more difficult posts... Read more

Concerning all those angry white married men in pews
Last updated on: March 13, 2014 at 9:02 am By tmatt
It’s mid-term election time, which means that it’s time, once again, for the mainstream press to try to figure out what is wrong with all of those angry white men. You remember the angry white men, right? Remember the folks who keep insisting on clinging to their — what was that phrase again — guns, religion and antipathy to people who are not like them? GetReligion readers can probably predict which one of those factors was ignored in the recent... Read more

Jews and Jesus: A ‘Spiritual Incursion’ in St. Louis
Last updated on: March 13, 2014 at 9:49 am By Bobby Ross Jr.
The breaking news — only 2,000 years old — that Christians and Jews have vastly different views of Jesus made the front page of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch over the weekend (and was picked up nationally by Religion News Service this week). To be more specific, the Post-Dispatch featured a Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod congregation that seeks to convert Jews. The newspaper’s main headline immediately cast the effort in a negative light: SPIRITUAL INCURSION Now, according to my online dictionary, incursion... Read more
