The new business model: Give it away free

Last updated on: July 30, 2009 at 5:30 am   By Gene Veith

Here is an interestingreview of a new book by Wired editor Chris Anderson entitled Free: The Future of a Radical Price: It’s called “freemium.” That term, first popularized by venture capitalist Fred Wilson, describes a business model that combines free with premium and is based on the underlying assumption that the most effective price is free. Anderson says that companies can use the powerful marketing tool of “free” to garner the largest possible audience, and then convert a portion to... Read more

Peter Hitchens is a Christian, but his brother Christopher is a militant atheist, author of the book God is Not Great. Peter recently posed a dilemma for Christian-bashers like his brother. From Christian Telegraph: A broadcaster and journalist has been telling London’s Premier Radio that the United Kingdom ‘could soon become a Muslim country,’ reports Michael Ireland, chief correspondent, ASSIST News Service. Peter Hitchens, who is an Anglican, says it’s because Christianity is too feeble in Great Britain. According to... Read more

Megachurches and big corporations

Last updated on: July 29, 2009 at 6:00 am   By Gene Veith

A New York Times website explores the relationship between big churches and big corporations: Successful megachurches reflect American corporate history and management theory. Their architecture and organization “are best compared to those of the modern white-collar workplace.” In an essay and slide show from Triple Canopy, Joseph Clarke [follow the links] says it may be tempting to compare megachurch pastors like Joel Osteen to arena rock stars, but a more apt analogy is C.E.O. And the modern megachurch is as... Read more

Death of an avant garde artist

Last updated on: July 29, 2009 at 5:33 am   By Gene Veith

The avant garde choreographer Merce Cunningham has died at the age of 90. He was for dance what John Cage, his collaborator was for music; that is, he eliminated virtually every traditional element of the art form. Cunningham had his dancers move with no reference to the music that was playing. He determined sequences by flipping a coin in an effort to make his art random and to eliminate any personality or expressiveness. He was praised for having his dancers... Read more

iPS cells as alternative to embryonic stem cells

Last updated on: July 29, 2009 at 5:00 am   By Gene Veith

Here is a new word for you: iPS cells (induced pluriponent stem cells), which work just as well as stem cells taken from killed embryos, as Chinese scientists have proven: In papers published online Thursday by two scientific journals, separate teams of researchers from Beijing and Shanghai reported that they had for the first time created virtual genetic duplicates of mice using skin cells from adult animals that had been coaxed into the equivalent of embryonic stem cells. The findings... Read more

Whatever happened to Sunday School?

Last updated on: July 28, 2009 at 6:00 am   By Gene Veith

Sunday School attendance has been dropping across virtually all denominations. This has attracted the attention of The Wall Street Journal. From a column by Charlotte Hays: The decline in Sunday schools appears to be gradual but steady. A study by the Barna Group indicated that in 2004 churches were 6% less likely to provide Sunday school for children ages 2 to 5 as in 1997. For middle-school kids, the decline was to 86% providing Sunday school in 2004 from 93%... Read more

Hospital insists pro-life nurse help with abortion

Last updated on: July 28, 2009 at 5:56 am   By Gene Veith

A pro-life nurse was coerced and manipulated into helping commit a late-term abortion against her conscience and is suing the hospital. Here is her story: A Brooklyn nurse claims she was forced to choose between her religious convictions and her job when Mount Sinai Hospital ordered her to assist in a late-term abortion against her will. The hospital even exaggerated the patient’s condition and claimed the woman could die if the nurse, a devout Catholic, did not follow orders, the... Read more

We are getting what we pay for in health care

Last updated on: July 28, 2009 at 5:30 am   By Gene Veith

We are spending more than ever on health care. But we are also getting better health care than ever. As has been said, we are spending more on other kinds of technology–entertainment systems, cell phones, computers–than we did a few decades ago, but few people think it’s not worth it. And the progress in health care over just a few years ago, thanks to new technology and new medicines, has been stunning. Contrary to political rhetoric, that health care is... Read more

Cranachers meet up north

As with tODD and Bror, more Cranach readers and commenters crossed paths with each other and sent me a photograph to prove it. This was a meeting of the Wisconsin cell of the vast Cranach nation, the three running into each other at the Concordia Catechetical Academy: Here we see, from left to right, Cindy Ramos (a former student of mine), Jane Kerner (aka “Another Kerner,” whose famous response to our cultural woes was to retreat to her attic with... Read more

Slavery and abortion

Last updated on: July 27, 2009 at 7:50 am   By Gene Veith

In a comparison of President Obama to President Lincoln and his adveraries, Jeffrey H. Anderson and Darren P. Guerra offer some illuminating analysis of the parallels between the two major moral, legal, and constitutional issues of the respective times: slavery and abortion: There are significant parallels between these two issues. Each is likely the political or moral issue about which Americans of their era have, or had, the most passionate feelings and the strongest opinions. Each was ultimately decided, at... Read more
