As California goes, so goes the nation

Last updated on: August 4, 2009 at 5:10 am   By Gene Veith

Economics columnist Robert J. Samuelson discusses the financial woes of the great state of California, and then arrives at a sobering conclusion: There is also a bigger story with national implications. California has reached a tipping point. Its government made more promises than its economy can easily support. For years, state leaders papered over the contradiction with loans and modest changes. By overwhelming these expedients, the recession triggered an inevitable reckoning. Here’s the national lesson. There’s a collision between high... Read more

Luther tourism

Last updated on: August 3, 2009 at 6:00 am   By Gene Veith

The travel section of yesterday’s Washington Post featured a big, three-page lead article on “Luther tourism,” visiting the sites in Germany associated with Martin Luther, with a detailed account of the author’s visits to Wittenberg, Erfurt, Worms, and other places. It’s a good article–check out the revelries in the “Lutherstube” at the Wartburg, which combines drinking games with readings from “Table Talk”–and I’m realizing I’ve got to make this pilgrimage. Next summer I’ll be teaching at the International Institute of... Read more

Demise of the music industry

Last updated on: August 3, 2009 at 5:19 am   By Gene Veith

The New York Times on the woes of the music industry: According to data from the Recording Industry Association of America, since music sales peaked in 1999, the value of those sales, after adjusting for inflation, has dropped by more than half. At that rate, the industry could be decimated before Madonna’s 60th birthday. The speed at which this industry is coming undone is utterly breathtaking. First, piracy punched a big hole in it. Now music streaming — music available... Read more

Russia as a Christian nation

Vladimir Putin is allying himself with the Russian Orthodox church. From Putin Enlists the Church in His Power Grab: Two stunning initiatives from the Russian government over the past few weeks illustrate a disturbing fusion of religion and politics as Vladimir Putin’s regime makes a final effort to consolidate dictatorship. First, the government announced that it would consult the Russian Orthodox Church before introducing any legislative proposals in parliament, in essence giving the church a veto on legislation and allowing... Read more

Cash for clunkers

If you were planning on buying a new car this weekend, taking advantage of the government’s offer to pay you $3,500-$4,500 on the purchase of a lower mileage car if you trade in a gas guzzler, you may be out of luck. The government has suspended the program because the demand has been so great there is a backlog of claims processing and the program has already burned through the $1 billion that the government has allotted. Because of the... Read more

Teaching perfect pitch

Last updated on: July 31, 2009 at 6:00 am   By Gene Veith

A Japanese music teacher named Kazuko Eguchi has devised a way to teach children younger than 4 years old perfect pitch: The few who are born with perfect pitch say notes have a concrete identity and presence, almost like colors, and being able to intuitively recognize them gives music an almost three-dimensional quality. . . . It is widely accepted that you cannot learn perfect pitch as an adult. But your child, it appears, can. . . . The Eguchi... Read more

The House has a health care bill

Last updated on: July 30, 2009 at 6:06 am   By Gene Veith

House Democrats have reached an agreement on a health care bill, though it won’t be voted upon until September, violating the President’s deadline. The moderate “blue dog” democrats were thrown some bones, so this version should pass. Here are some elements: Among other things, the House deal, put together with heavy involvement by White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, would exempt more small businesses from a requirement to provide insurance to employees or pay a penalty. The deal would... Read more
