Virtually every recording artist does it eventually. Now Bob Dylan is recording a Christmas album. Reportedly four songs are already in the can: “Must Be Santa,” “Here Comes Santa Claus,” “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” and “O Little Town of Bethlehem.” HT: Francis Beckwith at First Things Read more

The Case for Early Marriage

Last updated on: August 6, 2009 at 5:55 am   By Gene Veith

Mark Regnerus in Christianity Today makes the point that the Biblical solution for sexual immorality is not so much abstinence as marriage. He thinks many Christians have bought into the world’s views of marriage and have forgotten God’s design. While Americans are getting married later and later, with Christians mostly following along and doing the same, Regnerus encourages Christians to get married earlier. See The Case for Early Marriage. Postponing marriage, Regnerus says, thwarts God’s biological and spiritual design and... Read more

Murdoch to charge for on-line news

Last updated on: August 6, 2009 at 5:15 am   By Gene Veith

Media tycoon Rupert Murdoch is going to try to make the leap from making money from newspaper subscriptions to making money from subscriptions to online news. He has announced that he will start charging people to access all of his news sites. That would include FoxNews.com, as well as his numerous newspaper properties around the world. The Wall Street Journal charges for online access. So does World Magazine. Though none of us like to pay for anything, isn’t this reasonable?... Read more

Henry VIII, persecutor

Last updated on: August 6, 2009 at 5:00 am   By Gene Veith

July 30 was the day of commemoration for Robert Barnes, the English Lutheran who was martyred for his faith. I had always assumed that he was killed by Roman Catholic inquisitors, but he wasn’t. He was burned at the stake by Henry VIII, years after the king had broken from Rome! (When he burned Barnes for not believing in transubstantiation and for believing that Communion should be given to the laity in both kinds, he also executed three Catholics for... Read more

The “public option” would pay for abortion

Last updated on: August 5, 2009 at 9:43 am   By Gene Veith

The government-run insurance plan that would compete with private carriers in the proposed health care legislation would cover abortions. Health care legislation before Congress would allow a new government-sponsored insurance plan to cover abortions, a decision that would affect millions of women and recast federal policy on the divisive issue. Federal funds for abortions are now restricted to cases involving rape, incest or danger to the health of the mother. Abortion opponents say those restrictions should carry over to any... Read more

Science is not the threat to faith; postmodernism is

Last updated on: August 5, 2009 at 5:15 am   By Gene Veith

A study of college students has found that science majors do not lose their religion as much as humanities students do, suggesting that science is not as corrosive to faith as postmodernism is. From Christianpost.com: Results from a recent study on the impact of a college student’s major on their religiosity have led researchers to conclude that postmodernism, rather than science, is the greatest antagonist of religiosity. “Because we consider both the Humanities and many of the Social Sciences particularly... Read more

Clarifying the Prime Minister’s communion practice

From A Canadian Newspaper Apologizes for Inventing a Scandal – NYTimes.com: In a lengthy correction, the New Brunswick newspaper said that “there was no credible support” for the article’s claim that Prime Minister Stephen Harper had pocketed the wafer during the funeral of a former governor-general or that a Roman Catholic priest was demanding an explanation from his office. Unusually, the newspaper apologized not just to Mr. Harper but also to the two reporters whose names appeared on the article,... Read more

The mysterious Marlins

Last updated on: August 5, 2009 at 5:00 am   By Gene Veith

The Florida Marlins have won two World Series in their brief 17-year life span. But they have baseball’s lowest attendance figures and lowest payroll. Their strategy is whenever they get a good player to get rid of him to save money. And yet, no matter what they do, they keep winning. The latest cut-rate team is just three games behind the division-leading Phillies. Read this account and be encouraged that you really can do a lot with a little. Read more

Next year the Japanese automaker Nissan will come out with the Leaf, an all-electric car that will cost no more than its equivalent gasoline-powered model, under $30,000. GM’s Volt is expected to cost over $40,000. The Volt was supposed to come out next year when the Leaf does, but now reports are that it might not come out until 2011. The Volt’s electric engine will go for 40 miles, whereupon a gasoline engine kicks in to charge the battery. The... Read more

A previously unknown composition by Mozart has been discovered, written when he was around 7 years old. His father Leopold wrote down the notes that the little tyke was playing.
