ELCA in full communion with Methodists

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America did more at their convention than affirm homosexuality. The delegates also voted to extend full pulpit, altar, and every other kind of fellowship with the United Methodist Church. The chief legislative authority of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) adopted a full communion agreement with the United Methodist Church (UMC) on Thursday by a 958-51 vote. Under the agreement, the two church bodies express a common confession of Christian faith; mutual recognition of... Read more

Co-opt the Health Care Reform bill to restrict abortions?

Last updated on: August 25, 2009 at 5:15 am   By Gene Veith

The House health care reform bill tries to work around the law that forbids taxpayer money going to pay for abortions. Note how that would work, but also note the possibility of a pro-life result that has pro-abortionists nervous: The House approach to the coverage of the procedure in federally subsidized insurance plans is presented as a compromise: Abortions would be funded out of the premiums that come from individuals, not money from taxpayers. But this is a cover, if... Read more

Fermi lab, in suburban Chicago, is going to send a beam of neutrinos underneath Wisconsin to be collected all the way in northern Minnesota, all in the hopes of understanding these mysterious entities. From Blasting Neutrinos Under Wisconsin May Yield Big Payoff – washingtonpost.com: Neutrinos blast right through the Earth with nary a spark. They interact so rarely and so weakly with normal matter that they can zip right through solid rock as though it were not even there —... Read more

ELCA’s principles of Biblical interpretation

Last updated on: August 24, 2009 at 5:30 am   By Gene Veith

The Sunday after the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America voted in convention to affirm homosexuality, the assigned Bible readings from the lectionary, which are read and preached upon during the service and that many ELCA congregations would be using, were Isaiah 29: 11-29; Ephesians 5:22-33; Mark 7:1-13: two powerful texts condemning the substitution of human teachings for God’s commands, and the classic text on Christian marriage. That strikes me as an even stronger sign than the tornado that smote the... Read more

But would the Health Care bill be constitutional?

Last updated on: August 24, 2009 at 5:15 am   By Gene Veith

That is a question that surely deserves consideration, doesn’t it? In the Washington Post, two attorneys, David B. Rivkin Jr. and Lee A. Casey, cite a number of Supreme Court precedents that would indicate that a law mandating that everyone purchase insurance would not pass constitutional muster. According to the rulings and the case law they cite, Congress has no authority under the much-invoked commerce clause to require private economic transactions. Nor can Congress use its taxing power–as has been... Read more

Pro-lifers are winning the argument

Buried in the Washington Post is this small item: Poll: 51% Say They Are Pro-Life: A Gallup poll found for the first time that a majority of Americans identify themselves as pro-life. A May survey, just released, asked the question: With respect to the abortion issue, would you consider yourself to be pro-choice or pro-life? In 1995, 33 percent of respondents identified themselves as pro-life and 56 percent as pro-choice. But in May, 51 percent said they were pro-life and... Read more

ELCA completely embraces homosexuality

Last updated on: August 21, 2009 at 7:31 pm   By Gene Veith

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of America in convention went for the trifecta in affirming homosexuality. The liberal Lutherans ruled that homosexual sex is moral, allowed churches to bless gay unions, and allowed non-celibate gays to be pastors. In each case, the approval applies only to “monogamous” relationships. The new policy does not address gay marriage as such. The only church body that does affirm gay marriage is the United Church of Christ. Still, the news service Reuters, linked above, says... Read more

The parable of the tomatoes

Last updated on: August 21, 2009 at 5:43 am   By Gene Veith

Reflections on my great tomato ideological experiment that I blogged about earlier, in which I compared my garden experience with a heritage tomato (representing crunchy, traditionalist conservatism) to a hybrid tomato (representing progressive, free market conservatism). . . . Both tomatoes fulfilled their nature. The hybrid was bigger, stronger, produced more fruit, and that earlier. The agri-scientists were breeding tomato plants for just these qualities, and they were successful. Such advances in botany have made starvation technologically obsolete, though starvation... Read more

Pitching upgrade

Here is what the Washington Nationals have in Stephen Strasburg, the pitching prodigy they drafted and managed to sign at great expense: Strasburg has put the Nats squarely on baseball’s map, on the list of can’t-miss attractions in the game that must be seen. Does he really throw 100 to 102 mph with command? Or is that partly scouts’ mythology? Is his 93-mph slider really his best pitch, so sharp it actually seems to hit something in midair and deflect?... Read more

If you see a suspicious looking old man wandering around your neighborhood in a hooded coat, late at night and in the rain, it might be Bob Dylan. He’s been doing that sort of thing lately, and people have been calling the cops on him. But he has never played the “don’t you know who I am” card, going along with the cops until they get it all sorted out. Read more
