President Obama at school

President Obama is going to address the nation’s school children today. Some parents are objecting. I don’t in principle. It would be a good custom for presidents, a patriotic exercise, an education in citizenship for the young tykes. I remember how in the days of JFK, we were all caught up in the “President’s physical fitness program,” doing pull-ups for our country. And yet, if the President tries to form a children’s crusade, enlisting them in his causes and asking... Read more

Why do kids need to get educated?

Last updated on: September 8, 2009 at 5:45 am   By Gene Veith

The Sunday Comics in the Washington Post has a feature in which kids write in with questions, usually science related, and the cartoonist answers them, usually with some kind of fun experiment. This week the question some kid asked was something like this: “Since we have the internet, why do we need to go to school?” I would suggest that the child who asked that has been very poorly served by whatever school he attends. The answer, though, didn’t make... Read more

Teaching content

Some of you in that education-related post of a few days ago, expressed concern about homeschooling that many parents do not know enough about certain subjects to teach them to their children, who would do better to learn them from teachers who are the experts. Have you ever seen the college curriculum required for an education major to become an elementary school teacher? They have to take virtually all education courses. The typical elementary school teacher in a math class... Read more

Vocation Day, the holiday formerly known as Labor Day

Last updated on: September 7, 2009 at 7:29 am   By Gene Veith

Happy Vocation Day! Today used to be called Labor Day. (Incredibly, you can still find people who are isolated and out of touch that still call it that.) But thanks to a crusade sponsored by this blog and the activism of its readers, we have successfully taken it over, turning it into a Christian holiday focusing on one of the most important teachings of the Reformation, the doctrine of vocation. OK, we haven’t quite made that much progress in our... Read more

What the doctrine of vocation is

Last updated on: September 7, 2009 at 7:00 am   By Gene Veith

A couple of years ago, I wrote a brief article on the doctrine of vocation for Modern Reformation. It explains what the doctrine is, in its different manifestations–including the Four Estates–and why this teaching is so important. The opening paragraphs: “Justification by faith alone” is surely the most important contribution of the Reformation. The second most important, arguably, is the “doctrine of vocation.” Whereas the doctrine of justification has wide currency, the doctrine of vocation has been all but forgotten.... Read more

The great tomato recession

Last updated on: September 4, 2009 at 6:00 am   By Gene Veith

You will perhaps recall The great tomato ideological experiment, in which I planted a hybrid tomato, exemplifying the achievements of free market conservatism, and a heritage tomato, exemplifying traditionalist conservatism, which I turned into a the great tomato parable. The hybrid tomato was far more productive, but the heritage tomato tasted somewhat better. Well, I must report on what happened next. Shortly after I picked the tomatoes for the taste test, both plants stopped producing. Now BOTH plants are dead!... Read more

Court rules that education must be about "different points of view"

Last updated on: September 4, 2009 at 5:30 am   By Gene Veith

Joseph Bottum at the First Things blog site discusses a court ruling against home schooling that posits a new requirement for education: A divorced couple’s irreconcilable differences make what seems a very bad occasion for legal decisions with serious First Amendment implications. But that’s what we have in the June 2009 New Hampshire family-court decision In re Kurowski & Voydatch. The libertarian law-professor and polymath Eugene Volokh summarizes the situation well: “The 10-year-old daughter lives during the week with her... Read more

Suppressing talent for success

Music reviewer Dave McKenna puts his finger on an odd phenomenon that tells us a lot about the music industry and pop culture. In a review of a Keith Urban concert, he writes, You’d have to go back to Glen Campbell to find a pop-country star whose musical skills are buried any deeper in hit records than Keith Urban’s. The guy can really, really play a guitar. But while Vince Gill and Brad Paisley, Urban’s peers on country’s guitar-hero scene,... Read more

A scandal is breaking out in England over revelations that the National Health Service has been implementing a policy of routinely–and apparently without consulting either the patient or the family–cutting off intravenous food and fluids for patients deemed to be close to death, instead just pumping them up with sedative drugs until they die. From the London Telegraph, Sentenced to death on the NHS: Under NHS guidance introduced across England to help doctors and medical staff deal with dying patients,... Read more
