Wittenberg, the Play
Last updated on: September 14, 2009 at 6:00 am By Gene Veith
Last Spring I blogged about a new play called Wittenberg, which is about three individuals whom history and literature place at the University of Wittenberg: two professors, a Dr. Luther and a Dr. Faustus, and a student, a Danish international student named Hamlet. See A play I have to see and A Reformation Comedy. In the course of our discussions, playwright David Davalos, who wrote the play, weighed in, making me want to see it even more. Well, I did.... Educating children to be normal
Last updated on: September 14, 2009 at 5:45 am By Gene Veith
My colleague Mark Mitchell has published a scintillating article in Touchstone that touches on one of our recent discussion on homeschooling, offers a model of childraising, and raises something that we hardly ever hear about anymore: the moral imagination. Samples: Are we raising kids who won’t fit in? I have asked this of myself regularly over the past few years. My wife and I are educating our three boys at home. We don’t watch television (only an occasional video). We... Read more

Another 9/11
Last updated on: September 11, 2009 at 6:55 am By Gene Veith
We should always honor the victims and the heroes who gave their lives on this date. And it should remind us to be always vigilant against the threat of terrorism. But, at some point, do we need to put what happened on September 11, 2001, behind us? Can fear of another 9/11 or desire for retribution for 9/11 distort our foreign and domestic policies? Back then, we were filled with an exhilarating national unity and a righteous desire for revenge.... Read more

Butterfly in space

Here is a beautiful, evocative picture taken by the Hubble telescope. vast streams of gas racing at over 600,000mph from a dying star. This gossamer, delicate image is of streams of gas shooting out at 600,000 m.p.h. from a dying star. The beautiful and the sublime (including Burke’s sense of both the vast and the terrifying) come together. Read more

Clergy sexual abuse?
Last updated on: September 10, 2009 at 6:05 am By Gene Veith
Now this is disturbing: One in every 33 women who attend worship services regularly has been the target of sexual advances by a religious leader, a survey released Wednesday says. The study, by Baylor University researchers, found that the problem is so pervasive that it almost certainly involves a wide range of denominations, religious traditions and leaders. “It certainly is prevalent, and clearly the problem is more than simply a few charismatic leaders preying on vulnerable followers,” said Diana Garland,... Obama’s Health Care Speech
Last updated on: September 10, 2009 at 6:00 am By Gene Veith
Here is the President’s speech to Congress in which he makes his case for Health Care reform. Are you persuaded? Here is his explanation of the system he wants to implement: First, if you are among the hundreds of millions of Americans who already have health insurance through your job, Medicare, Medicaid, or the VA, nothing in this plan will require you or your employer to change the coverage or the doctor you have. Let me repeat this: nothing in... Read more

What makes this writing bad?
Last updated on: September 10, 2009 at 5:40 am By Gene Veith
Dan Brown, author of the Christian-bashing, made-up-history-presented-as-truth, mega-selling novel The Da Vinci Code has a new book out, The Lost Symbol. This time the conspiracy has to do with Masons and Washington, D.C., as well as the Catholic church. Critics are lampooning the thing, but that surely won’t prevent millions of people from reading it and believing what they read. This British article cites some of the criticism and proposes the author’s 20 worst sentences. Read them, but first let’s... Read more

The ELCA has left the Great Tradition
Last updated on: September 9, 2009 at 6:00 am By Gene Veith
Robert Benne is an ELCA theologian of great note, who has written helpfully about vocation, the two kingdoms, and education. He has written a stunning diagnosis of his denomination for Christianity Today. It’s called How the ELCA Left the Great Tradition for Liberal Protestantism. Excerpts: Those in the orthodox camp warned the assembly not to vote on binding church doctrine, especially if it had no convincing biblical or theological arguments to overturn the moral consensus of the one holy, catholic,... The new new-NIV may be even more gender-inclusive
Last updated on: September 9, 2009 at 5:30 am By Gene Veith
We blogged about how a Zondervan editor thinks the handling of the TNIV was a mistake, but, as some of you pointed out, he may have been referring more to mistakes of marketing than of mistakes of translation. Other news reports are suggesting that the new TNIV will have even more gender-inclusive language: The New International Version (NIV) of the Bible is going to begin its first revision in over 25 years, according to the Associated Press. The changes that... Read more
