Polanski's arrest a "cultural scandal"?

Last updated on: September 28, 2009 at 5:15 am   By Gene Veith

Here is an example of what we were discussing earlier, whether an artist is a superior being not subject to ordinary morality or even, in some minds, the laws of society. Roman Polanski, the distinguished film director ran away from American justice after being charged with having sex with a 13-year-old child. (Actually, as detailed below, what he did was even worse than that, but this was the lesser charge he agreed to plea to.) This was back in 1977.... Read more

The Jerusalem Post reports a startling archeological discovery. Coins with Joseph’s name found in Egypt : Archeologists have discovered ancient Egyptian coins bearing the name and image of the biblical Joseph, Cairo’s Al Ahram newspaper recently reported. Excerpts provided by MEMRI show that the coins were discovered among a multitude of unsorted artifacts stored at the Museum of Egypt. According to the report, the significance of the find is that archeologists have found scientific evidence countering the claim held by... Read more

Conversations with the Wittenberg Playwright #2

Last updated on: September 28, 2009 at 5:00 am   By Gene Veith

Continuing the conversation with David Davalos, the author of Wittenberg, this is what I wrote back after the message I posted last time: David, How good of you to write! I had wanted to come back to Maryland on the day you were speaking and to hear the reading of your play about Leonardo da Vinci and Machiavelli. That would have been some long drives, but then I got sick, making it all a moot point. So I greatly appreciate... Read more

Manson-cult murderer dies, but found redemption

Last updated on: September 25, 2009 at 6:45 am   By Gene Veith

Susan Atkins, the follower of Charles Manson and the murderer of the pregnant Sharon Tate, is dead. The news account of her death tells quite a story, going from unimaginable depravity to the Cross: One night in August 1969, Manson dispatched Atkins and others to a wealthy residential section of Los Angeles, telling them, as they recalled, to “do something witchy.” They went to the home of Tate and her husband. He was not home, but Tate, who was 8{... Read more

Conversations with the Wittenberg playwright #1

You may recall that I recently blogged about a play I recently attended entitled Wittenberg, which is about three denizens of that university interacting with each other: Faustus, Hamlet, and Luther. Click here for my review, which you may want to review for what follows. Well, David Davalos, who wrote the play, read what I had to say and was kind enough to respond. This has provoked an interesting correspondence, parts of which, with his permission, I thought I’d share.... Read more

Old English treasure horde

Last updated on: September 25, 2009 at 5:47 am   By Gene Veith

Do you remember in Beowulf about the dragon’s gold-horde, and how after Beowulf died killing the dragon his people rejected the treasure, burying it under a burrow? Well, a bloke with a metal detector may have found it. The treasure has over 1500 pieces–gold, silver, weapons, ornaments, all rudely-wrought– dating from the 600’s or 700’s, which would be when Beowulf was written–soon after the Angles and the Saxons converted to Christianity. Historians and archeologists are blown away with the find,... Read more

President disses British prime minister

Last updated on: September 25, 2009 at 5:30 am   By Gene Veith

At the big conclave of world leaders in New York City and Pittsburg, President Obama is majorly dissing the British Prime Minister, the Labour Party’s Gordon Brown. From a British newspaper: Gordon Brown lurched from being hailed as a global statesman to intense embarrassment tonight, after it emerged US President Barack Obama had turned down no fewer than five requests from Downing Street to hold a bilateral meeting at the United Nations in New York or at the G20 summit... Read more

Hu's on first

The Dodgers are in town, on the verge of giving the Nationals their 100th defeat. I was pleased to learn that the team from L.A. has a player from Taiwan named Chin-lung Hu. I’m sure Southern California is already sick of the Abbott & Costello possibilities, but there is no reason the rest of us shouldn’t indulge in that sketch again, now that we really can say, “Hu’s on first.” Why is this so funny? Read more

A ring tone for your car

Last updated on: September 24, 2009 at 5:46 am   By Gene Veith

Electric cars are quiet. Therefore, no one can hear them coming. Therefore, they are hazardous. So engineers are working to develop artificial sounds for them. Under consideration are chimes, melodies, and a whirring sound. Once all cars are electric, can you imagine the sounds of a busy street? What if the sound is chimes? It would be Edgar Allen Poe all over again: “Oh, the bells, bells, bells, bells, bells, bells, bells.” And then what if all the drivers’ cell... Read more

India probe finds water on the moon

Last updated on: September 24, 2009 at 5:45 am   By Gene Veith

A lunar probe sent off by India has found evidence that the moon has water. That may make a moon colony possible. But it might not be an American colony. I wonder if this breakthrough may signal a shift away from American scientific and technological dominance to that of Asian countries that are doing a better job of educating their children in math and science than we are. Read more
