Want to buy a magazine?

Last updated on: October 1, 2009 at 5:30 am   By Gene Veith

Time Warner has announced that it is selling the magazine that gave it its first name, Time. The company, which will mainly just consist of HBO and some other TV properties, will also throw in People and Sports Illustrated. This comes on the heels of a drastic and, in my opinion, disastrous retooling of Newsweek, which has stopped printing news and is just keeping its bias, focusing on what it has done most poorly, namely analysis features. Is there a... Read more

Health care reform as a barrier to abortions?

Last updated on: October 1, 2009 at 5:22 am   By Gene Veith

I posted about this possibility before, but now pro-abortion folks are getting nervous about health care reform. The Atlantic blog reports that the laws against taxpayer money going for abortion may well mean that if health care reform gets passed, insurance companies would have to stop covering abortions: Some of the supporters of health care reform have rediscovered worries about crowding out.  That’s because it now looks as if the bill may not allow Federal subsidies to be used to... Read more

The vocation of an astronaut

Astronaut Jeff Williams is blasting off into space today on a Russian rocket, headed to the International Space Station where he will spend 6 months. This will be his third space voyage and his second 6 month stint on the space station. He will be among the leaders in time spent in outer space. He is a devout Christian and a Missouri Synod Lutheran. Our paths have crossed several times–he is a fan of my book on vocation!–and I have... Read more

Potential Olympic cities

President Obama is stumping for his hometown of Chicago in its bid for the 2016 Olympics. That’s fine. Chicago would be a good choice. Other cities in contention include Madrid, Tokyo, and Rio de Janeiro. If not Chicago, let’s have it in Brazil. South America has never hosted the games before. What do you think? Read more

On the job at the National Science Foundation

Last updated on: September 30, 2009 at 5:15 am   By Gene Veith

Some employees of the taxpayer-funded National Science Foundation are not spending their days doing science. The agency is reportedly plagued with a pornography epidemic. Employee misconduct investigations, often involving workers accessing pornography from their government computers, grew sixfold last year inside the taxpayer-funded foundation that doles out billions of dollars of scientific research grants, according to budget documents and other records obtained by The Washington Times. The problems at the National Science Foundation (NSF) were so pervasive they swamped the... Read more

Conversation with the Wittenberg playwright #4

More of my correspondence with David Davalos, author of the play Wittenberg, shared with his permission. My answer to his answer: Fair enough, David. I get what you are trying to do. It just seems that a Faustus without the devil is hardly a Faustus–like Ahab without the whale, or Hamlet without his father getting killed. The whole point about Faustus is that he DOES believe in the devil, but considers the fulfillment of his desires worth the price of... Read more

A cold war against God?

Last updated on: September 29, 2009 at 5:30 am   By Gene Veith

Boston University professor Andrew J. Bacevich argues in the Washington Post that we should abandon the hot war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Instead, we should move to a cold war against our adversaries, beating them in the same we beat the Soviets, through an ideological victory. The problem is what he thinks the ideological issues are. From To Defeat Terrorism, U.S. Should Wage a Cold War: Devising a new course requires accurately identifying the problem, which is not “terrorism” and,... Read more

The great Bob Dylan challenge

Last updated on: September 29, 2009 at 5:15 am   By Gene Veith

In our discussion of Bob Dylan’s upcoming Christmas album a few days ago, some of you maintained that the one true Bob does not have a good voice, that while he is a fine songwriter, the man just can’t sing. I know what you mean, of course, but I enjoy Dylan’s unique vocal style, finding it original and authentic and expressive, and also stylistically appropriate for his songs. I propose an aesthetic experiment. Let’s listen to someone singing a Bob... Read more

Picking up on my exchange with David Davalos, author of Wittenberg–the play about Luther, Hamlet, and Faustus, this is his answer to what I posted yesterday: Gene, Again, thank you so much for your thoughts and encouragement. Emerson to Whitman? Wow. You may of course post my comments on your blog — I’m flattered to be asked. Not to beat a dead horse-courser here with Faustus at the end of the play, but I did want to respond to your... Read more

The West Oversea experiment

Last updated on: September 28, 2009 at 6:00 am   By Gene Veith

Last week we blogged about Dan Brown’s new book, which, despite its awful writing and worse themes, is destined to sell untold millions of copies. We contrasted that with the new novel by Lars Walker, who hangs out at this blog, which is very well written and deserves a wide audience. See my review of his book West Oversea. In a comment, Lars made the excellent point that many “well written” literary novels are not very enjoyable to read, due... Read more
