The Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup proof for God’s existence

Last updated on: October 6, 2009 at 5:45 am   By Gene Veith

USA Today online reports this exchange: Famed atheist Richard Dawkins appeared on The Colbert Report Wednesday night promoting his new book on evolution, The Greatest Show on Earth. His conversation with Stephen Colbert went something like this: Dawkins: “You asked me for the evidence for evolution, where’s the evidence for God?” Colbert: “Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.” I think that’s a remarkably profound answer. Unpack why that delicious candy bar is evidence for God’s existence. Read more

I mentioned in a post yesterday that I am teaching a course at Patrick Henry College called “Major Christian Authors.” Some of you asked about my reading list. Here it is: (1) Dante’s Paradiso (2) Edmund Spenser’s Faerie Queene, Book I “Holiness” (3) George Herbert, The Temple (4) John Bunyan, Pilgrim’s Progress (5) Gerard Manley Hopkins, Complete Poems (6) G. Christian movies try to be better, but still. . .

From an article entitled “Growing quantity of `Christian’ films now focus on quality”: In addition to “To Save a Life,” [about basketball players facing a friend’s death] other upcoming 2010 Christian movies include “Letters to God,” a Possibility Pictures film about a cancer-stricken boy who writes to God in letters carried by a troubled postal worker. “The Revelator,” a Pure Flix Entertainment production about a terminally ill orphan who tries to save his doctor’s marriage, also is scheduled for release... Read more

The gulf between the entertainment world and America

Last updated on: October 5, 2009 at 5:31 am   By Gene Veith

Over 100 Hollywood moguls and insiders–including Woody Allen, Martin Scorcese, David Lynch, and Harvey Weinstein–have signed petitions urging the release of child rapist Roman Polanski, who has been arrested after fleeing a plea bargain 30 years ago. What impresses me is that pretty much the rest of America–the whole range of conservatives, liberals, feminists–are on the other side, demanding that Polanski face justice for raping a 13-year-old (not a statutory rape, but forcible sex against her will), even though he... Read more

Conservative intellectuals & conservative populists

Last updated on: October 5, 2009 at 5:00 am   By Gene Veith

Steven F. Hayward, a Reagan scholar and a conservative himself, asks Is Conservatism Brain-Dead?. I’ll put his argument simply, so my fellow conservatives can understand it in case he’s right: Conservative intellectuals–such as William F. Buckley, Irving Kristol, Milton Friedman–are dying out and have few replacements. That leaves conservatives only with “populists”: Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Sarah Palin. He does not discount the latter, saying that a successful political movement–such as the Reagan revolution–must have BOTH populists AND... Read more

Rio de Janeiro wins 2016 Olympic Games. Madrid came in second. Tokyo came in third. Chicago–despite the presence of President and Mrs. Obama and Oprah Winfrey–got knocked out in the first round. Congratulations, Brazil. (FWS, our correspondent in Brasil, as he and Brazilians spell it, please report.) Read more

President Pawlenty?

Last updated on: October 2, 2009 at 6:20 am   By Gene Veith

The 2012 presidential campaign begins already? Pawlenty preps 2012 campaign team: Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty has been quietly assembling the blueprint of a presidential campaign and will announce Thursday the support of a group of high-level political strategists and donors, complemented by a handful of top new media consultants, POLITICO has learned. Pawlenty, under the radar of D.C.’s political community, has locked up some of the key operatives who engineered then-President George W. Bush’s reelection campaign — a significant feat... Read more

Do you have “Cadillac” health insurance?

Last updated on: October 2, 2009 at 6:00 am   By Gene Veith

To help fund the proposed health reform measures, lawmakers are thinking about imposing a stiff tax–up to 35%–on so-called “Cadillac” health insurance plans. Those are defined as individual plans valued at $8,000 per year, or family plans valued at $21,000. They typically have low deductibles, cover vision, and dental. Such plans are usually just described as “good benefits,” or “I’m really pleased with the health insurance that our company offers.” Such “Cadillac” plans are not just for high-paid executives. They... Read more

St. Damien

Last updated on: October 2, 2009 at 5:30 am   By Gene Veith

Father Damien was a priest who served the leper colony at Molokai in the Hawaiian islands in the 19th century. He ministered to the lepers as a missionary and tended to their physical care. After working 12 years with the lepers, he himself caught the disease and died 5 years later at the colony in 1889. On October 11, the Vatican will declare him to be a saint. One does not have to agree with Rome’s theology of sainthood to... Read more

Sarah Palin’s co-author

Last updated on: October 1, 2009 at 6:00 am   By Gene Veith

Whenever I so much as mention Sarah Palin, it provokes a shark-like feeding frenzy of her fans and her haters tearing into each other. The woman inspires so much raw emotion on both sides that it’s exceedingly odd, in my opinion. But I do not intend to talk about ex-governor Palin, as such. I want to talk about her upcoming book, which won’t be out until November 17, but its pre-orders have already made it a best seller. The link... Read more
