Anniversary of the prayer meeting that brought down the Wall

Last updated on: October 9, 2009 at 5:52 am   By Gene Veith

Twenty years ago today in Leipzig, where Bach used to live, a prayer meeting at a Lutheran church became the catalyst for the anti-communist demonstrations that a month later would bring down the Berlin Wall. Here is the story: A prayer service for peace in an historic Lutheran church in the East German city of Leipzig 20 years ago triggered the chain of events that exactly a month later led to the opening of the Berlin Wall. As people gathered... Read more

The best television show ever?

Last updated on: October 9, 2009 at 5:45 am   By Gene Veith

Michael Anton makes a good case for The Twilight Zone: “Fantasy is the impossible made probable. Science fiction is the improbable made possible” — that’s how Serling initially described the concept. Every week, the show would have a new setting, a new cast, and a new premise. The unifying theme would be “the unknown” — understood broadly to include space travel and time travel, ESP and immortality, dystopian futures and idyllic pasts, Santa Claus and Mr. Death. Yet it was... Read more

How about THIS health care reform idea?

Last updated on: October 9, 2009 at 5:30 am   By Gene Veith

Harvard economist Martin Feldstein proposes a different approach to health care reform. Under his plan, the government would just ensure that everyone has catastrophic health care insurance that would kick in when you spend 15% of your income on medical expenses. Below that, you would pay, either for the times you go to the doctor or for an extra insurance policy. This would be much cheaper than the proposed pay-for-everything plan. I’ll let him explain it: A good system should... Read more

“The shroud is more than the image”

Last updated on: October 8, 2009 at 6:00 am   By Gene Veith

Italian scientists have claimed to have reproduced the apparent image of Jesus on the Shroud of Turin by wrapping a person in linen, rubbing him with ochre, and putting blood on the result. But now a group of pro-shroud experts is casting doubt on that casting of doubt. From the Christian Telegraph, Experts question scientist’s claim of reproducing Shroud of Turin: Dr. Jackson first questioned the technique used by Garlaschelli’s team, taking issue with the method of adding blood after... Read more

Antiwar movement targets President Obama

Last updated on: October 8, 2009 at 5:45 am   By Gene Veith

The Washington Post reports Antiwar Protesters Turn Their Sights on Obama. Here in our nation’s capital, the old sign carriers that stood in front of the Bush White House have started their vigil in front of the Obama White House. Code Pink is now vilifying President Obama, just as it did President Bush. Even Moveon.org is turning against the president whose campaign it bankrolled. Leftists are disillusioned that the president they held so much hope for is continuing the war... Read more

Trimming the deficit via health care reform?

Last updated on: October 8, 2009 at 5:30 am   By Gene Veith

The latest health care proposal is touted as saving the government money: A health-care reform bill drafted by the Senate Finance Committee would expand health coverage to nearly 30 million Americans who currently lack insurance and would meet President Obama’s goal of reducing the federal budget deficit by 2019, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said Wednesday. The bill would cost $829 billion over the next decade, but would more than offset that cost by slicing hundreds of billions from government... Read more

The problem of pleasure

Last updated on: October 7, 2009 at 6:03 am   By Gene Veith

The Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup post made me recall a C. S. Lewis quip, which together formed this thought: If the problem of pain is a difficult philosophical and theological problem–how could a just God allow the existence of so much pain in the world?–surely there must also be an equally difficult problem of pleasure: How could a just God allow the existence of so much pleasure in the world? What does it mean that God gave us our senses,... Read more

Revising the political left and right

Last updated on: October 7, 2009 at 5:50 am   By Gene Veith

Saying that liberals are on the “left” and conservatives are on the “right” goes back to the old General Assembly in post-revolutionary France. Representatives of the conservative factions–the nobility, the clergy–sat at the right of the meeting hall, while the Jacobins and other radical parties sat at the left. But such a spatial metaphor for the political spectrum can be quite misleading. David G. Muller, Jr at American Thinker explains why and proposes a new spectrum. He points out that... Read more

The caps on chromosomes

Last updated on: October 7, 2009 at 5:30 am   By Gene Veith

It’s Nobel Prize season, a time to salute good scholarship and, even more, to marvel at the structures built into nature that the winners have discovered. This year’s Nobel prize for medicine goes to three scientists who discovered how chromosomes stay together and keep their integrity even after the cells split. It seems the strands of genetic material have little caps on their ends: Elizabeth H. Blackburn of the University of California at San Francisco, Carol W. Greider of Johns... Read more

Making the Bible more conservative

Last updated on: October 6, 2009 at 6:00 am   By Gene Veith

Rod Dreher at Crunchycon draws attention to a venture designed to make the Bible more conservative. It’s a project of Conservapedia, a conservative version of Wikipedia. The idea is to use Wiki-style mass collaboration to make a new translation of the Bible that accords with ten principles. From Conservative Bible Project – Conservapedia: (1) Framework against Liberal Bias: providing a strong framework that enables a thought-for-thought translation without corruption by liberal bias (2) Not Emasculated: avoiding unisex, “gender inclusive” language,... Read more
