$1.4 trillion in the hole
Last updated on: October 19, 2009 at 5:30 am By Gene Veith
We now have official numbers for the federal deficit for the last fiscal year: a record $1.4 trillion. According to the Washington Post, this comes to 10% of the entire economy. This is four times the already large deficit last year. In fact, it’s more than the previous four years put together. The federal government took in $2.1 trillion in taxes, but spent $3.5 trillion. The good news? It’s $400 billion less than some had projected. The bad news? Similar... Read more

“You had said we did this for a show”
Last updated on: October 19, 2009 at 5:10 am By Gene Veith
If you try to pull off a scam, do not trust your six year old to back you up. He is likely to let slip the truth. See Colorado sheriff says parents concocted tale of boy’s flight in balloon, charges expected. Read more

Halloween Book Burning
Last updated on: October 16, 2009 at 6:00 am By Gene Veith
More anti-conservative, Bible-hating conservatism: Amazing Grace Baptist Church in Canton, North Carolina, is sponsoring a Book burning for Halloween. And what they are burning, like the devil’s own children, are Bibles. Here is a copy of the announcement: Come to our Halloween book burning. We are burning Satan’s bibles like the NIV, RSV, NKJV, TLB, NASB, NEV, NRSV, ASV, NWT, Good News for Modern Man, The Evidence Bible, The Message Bible, The Green Bible, ect. These are perversions of God’s... Read more

Aren’t conservatives allowed to buy football teams?
Last updated on: October 16, 2009 at 5:45 am By Gene Veith
Carl Cannon on Rush Limbaugh not being allowed to own a part of the St. Louis Rams: Conservatives suggested this week, not unreasonably, that if one of their own is ever to be awarded a peace prize, an organization other than the Nobel committee is going to have to hand it out. Considering the onslaught against Rush Limbaugh over his effort to purchase the St. Louis Rams, a related question arises: Will conservatives soon need their own professional sports leagues,... Particle collider zapped from the future?
Last updated on: October 16, 2009 at 5:30 am By Gene Veith
You know that new particle collider that was supposed to isolate the Higgs boson, the so-called “God particle,” which supposedly gives particles their mass? And how some people worried that the experiment might create a black hole that would destroy the earth? Well, the collider keeps breaking down. To the point of provoking a new theory. From The New York Times: More than a year after an explosion of sparks, soot and frigid helium shut it down, the world’s biggest... Read more

Bach’s smackdown of Frederick the Great
Last updated on: October 15, 2009 at 5:30 am By Gene Veith
I have just finished a book that I am going to count among my favorites of all time. It is that good. You have GOT to read it. It’s entitled Evening in the Palace of Reason: Bach Meets Frederick the Great in the Age of Enlightenment by James A. Gaines. In 1747, Frederick the Great–the king of Prussia, patron of Enlightenment rationalism, and military strongman–invited Johann Sebastian Bach, now an old man three years from his death, for an audience.... More troops at war now than under Bush
Last updated on: October 14, 2009 at 6:00 am By Gene Veith
There are now more U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan than there ever were during the Bush administration. From The Washington Post: President Obama announced in March that he would be sending 21,000 additional troops to Afghanistan. But in an unannounced move, the White House has also authorized — and the Pentagon is deploying — at least 13,000 troops beyond that number, according to defense officials. The additional troops are primarily support forces, including engineers, medical personnel, intelligence experts and... Read more

The Senate now has a specific health care reform bill to consider now that the Senate Finance Panel Passes a $829 Billion Health Plan: The Senate Finance Committee approved an $829 billion plan to overhaul U.S. health care, clearing the way for a full Senate debate over the broadest expansion of the government’s role in the medical system since the creation of Medicare in 1965.
