Rome recruits conservative Anglicans & makes them a deal
Last updated on: October 21, 2009 at 6:05 am By Gene Veith
The Vatican is seeking to recruit disaffected Anglicans, to the point of allowing their priests to stay married if they come over to Rome: The Vatican announced a stunning decision Tuesday to make it easier for Anglicans to convert, reaching out to those who are disaffected by the election of women and gay bishops to join the Catholic Church’s conservative ranks. Pope Benedict XVI approved a new church provision that will allow Anglicans to join the Catholic Church while maintaining... Read more

Get rid of all credit cards
Last updated on: October 21, 2009 at 5:47 am By Gene Veith
Now credit card companies are going to charge you a fee for paying off your balance every month and if you don’t use your card enough: Starting next year, Bank of America will charge a small number of customers an annual fee, ranging from $29 to $99. The bank has characterized the fee as experimental. But card holders who have never carried a balance or paid late fees could be among those affected. Citigroup, meanwhile, has started charging annual fees... Read more

Racism against Robots
Last updated on: October 21, 2009 at 5:37 am By Gene Veith
Economist Robin Hanson uncovers some original sin when it comes to fantasies about robots. It seems human beings really do like the idea of dominating and exploiting. But we knew that: On Tuesday I asked my law & econ undergrads what sort of future robots (AIs computers etc.) they would want, if they could have any sort they wanted. Most seemed to want weak vulnerable robots that would stay lower in status, e.g., short, stupid, short-lived, easily killed, and without... Read more

Academics interfering with college football
Last updated on: October 21, 2009 at 5:00 am By Gene Veith
The University of Virginia is a pretty good school, with strong academics. But its educational standards are interfering with its football ambitions. UVA had one of the top recruiting classes a few years ago, but a number of the recruits couldn’t get admitted to the university. Others flunked out or were put on academic probation. One one player in that class was on the team four years later. Other key players, including the quarterback, couldn’t cut it academically. To add... Read more

Human devolution
Last updated on: October 20, 2009 at 6:00 am By Gene Veith
An anthropologist has documented a remarkable physical decline in modern man: Many prehistoric Australian aboriginals could have outrun world 100 and 200 meters record holder Usain Bolt in modern conditions. Some Tutsi men in Rwanda exceeded the current world high jump record of 2.45 meters during initiation ceremonies in which they had to jump at least their own height to progress to manhood. Any Neanderthal woman could have beaten former bodybuilder and current California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in an arm... Read more

Parental rights vs. religious freedom
Last updated on: October 20, 2009 at 5:30 am By Gene Veith
What do you think about the Ohio teenager who became a Christian and later fled to Florida because she thinks her Muslim parents will kill her? The case is tied up in the courts as the parents are trying to get her back. They deny that they would kill her. The media is playing down the teaching in Islamic law that Muslims who change religion should, indeed, be killed, a position the Islamic chaplain at Harvard has affirmed. That doesn’t... Read more

Obama’s chaplain
Last updated on: October 20, 2009 at 5:00 am By Gene Veith
President Obama and his family still have not picked a church in Washington, D.C.–I’m still holding out hope for our St. Athanasius–but he has been attending services when he is at the presidential retreat Camp David, and the Navy chaplain assigned there sounds like quite a preacher. From The Washington Post: Seventy miles from Washington’s prying eyes, Barack Obama has been attending church from time to time at Camp David, where services are led by a 39-year-old Navy chaplain with... The camel going through the eye of the needle
Last updated on: October 19, 2009 at 6:00 am By Gene Veith
Pastor Douthwaite had another killer sermon yesterday. See what he does with the “camel through the eye of the needle” text (Mark 10:23-31). An excerpt (with a reference to a woman who had just been baptized earlier in the service): God did something much more difficult than put a camel through the eye of a needle. That sounds incredible to us, and so many commentators and teachers have tried to soften this teaching of Jesus by claiming that there was... Read more

Education and Fathers

Patrick Welsh, a teacher in our nation capital’s struggling school system came up with a trenchant insight from his own students: “Why don’t you guys study like the kids from Africa?” In a moment of exasperation last spring, I asked that question to a virtually all-black class of 12th-graders who had done horribly on a test I had just given. A kid who seldom came to class — and was constantly distracting other students when he did — shot back:... Read more

$1.4 trillion in the hole
Last updated on: October 19, 2009 at 5:30 am By Gene Veith
We now have official numbers for the federal deficit for the last fiscal year: a record $1.4 trillion. According to the Washington Post, this comes to 10% of the entire economy. This is four times the already large deficit last year. In fact, it’s more than the previous four years put together. The federal government took in $2.1 trillion in taxes, but spent $3.5 trillion. The good news? It’s $400 billion less than some had projected. The bad news? Similar... Read more
