Ridiculing the Penn State t-shirt controversy

Last updated on: November 5, 2009 at 5:30 am   By Gene Veith

Here is how to deal with a pseudo-controversy (referring to the student-selected t-shirt design for a football game, the logo drawn from the stripe on the Penn State uniform). Penn State Students Poke Fun at T-Shirt Cross 'Controversy' | Christianpost.com: Though the two-side design looks innocent enough, to some, the combination of the vertical blue stripe running down the center of the shirt’s front side along with the words “Penn State” cutting across the vertical beam appeared reminiscent of a... Read more

Crucifixion today

This report reminds us that Saudi Arabia still crucifies people, though it’s not quite crucifixion as the Romans did it. From Saudi court upholds child rapist crucifixion ruling: A Saudi court of cassation upheld a ruling to behead and crucify a 22-year-old man convicted of raping five children and leaving one of them to die in the desert, newspapers reported on Tuesday. The convict was arrested earlier this year after a seven-year old boy helped police in their investigation. The... Read more

Good, but not perfect, night for conservatives

Last updated on: November 4, 2009 at 5:45 am   By Gene Veith

In yesterday’s elections, two states that voted for Barack Obama elected Republican governors and Maine voters repealed in a referendum that state’s previously passed approval of gay marriage. The only bright spot for Democrats was in New York, where they picked up a previously Republican congressional district, turning back a conservative insurgent who drove the Republican out of the race. What do the Republican victories mean? It isn’t necessary to see them as a repudiation of President Obama for these... Read more

Where are the grassroots of the Left?

Last updated on: November 4, 2009 at 5:15 am   By Gene Veith

Richard Fernandez notes that grassroots conservatives have mobilized, what with all of the Tea Parties and the surge of political activism. But where are the grassroots leftists, the ones that raised all of that money and that did all of that organization for Barack Obama during his campaign? We learn that those grassroot organizations have been subsumed into the official Democratic party apparatus. They are directed from the top. Whereas the conservative groups are directed from below, to the point... Read more

Election Day

Today is Election Day. Here in Virginia, in one of the contests of national interest, I voted. (No, I’m not going to tell you who I voted for!) Here are some of the elections worth watching: Heading into Tuesday's elections, Democrat gubernatorial candidate R. Creigh Deeds was trailing Republican Bob McDonnell in polls by double digits in Virginia. In a three-way race in New Jersey, Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine was in a close race with Republican Chris Christie and independent... Read more

Muhammad: The Movie

In the “you don’t know what you are getting into” department, one of the producers of The Lord of the Rings movies is planning on making a movie about the prophet Muhammad: Producer Barrie Osborne cast Keanu Reeves as the messiah in The Matrix and helped defeat the dark lord Sauron in his record-breaking Lord of the Rings trilogy. Now the Oscar-winning American film-maker is set to embark on his most perilous quest to date: making a big-screen biopic of... Read more

Stimulus spent $160,000 for each job

Last updated on: November 3, 2009 at 5:27 am   By Gene Veith

Calculating the number of jobs created for the number of dollars spent for that purpose in the stimulus plan has come up with different figures, including as much as $250,000. But using the administration’s own optimistic figures that 1 million new jobs have been created, that still comes to $160,000 Per Stimulus Job: The White House argues that the actual job number is actually larger than 640,000 — closer to 1 million jobs when one factors in stimulus jobs added... Read more

The mainstreaming of Paganism

Last updated on: November 3, 2009 at 5:24 am   By Gene Veith

The New York Times reports that paganism in its different guises is becoming just another religion. From Paganism, Just Another Religion for Military and Academia; From academia to the military, in the person of chaplains and professors, through successful litigation and online networking, Paganism has done much in the last generation to overcome its perception as either Satanism or silliness. . . . As I mentioned the other day, I have been listening to Slim Dusty, the iconic Australian singer who died in 2003. He does the definitive “Waltzing Matilda” and other Australian folk songs, but he also performs Aussie-style country music. Sometimes, though, he sings with a gem that transcends categories. Here is a sampling from his final album, but I ask you to listen to “Get Along.” Prepare to be amazed. (One can imagine the late Beatles or a contemporary alternative... Read more
