Maj. Hasan’s jihadism was out in the open

Last updated on: November 12, 2009 at 5:39 am   By Gene Veith

So Maj. Nidal M. Hasan, M.D., who killed 13 human beings at Ft. Hood, carried on e-mail correspondence with radical jihadists, posted praise of suicide bombers and other radical Islamist sentiments on websites, gave lectures at Walter Reed on how Muslim soldiers should not fight fellow-Muslims, and in other ways was open about his radical jihadist beliefs. Not only that, officials knew he had done all these things! But they did nothing about it! Why not? Read more

China’s forced abortions

Last updated on: November 12, 2009 at 5:38 am   By Gene Veith

Kathleen Parker has a terrific column on forced abortions in China: Coerced abortions, as well as involuntary sterilizations, are commonplace in China, Beijing's protestations notwithstanding. While the Chinese Communist Party insists that abortions are voluntary under the nation's one-child policy, electronic documentation recently smuggled out of the country tells a different story. Congressional members of the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission heard some of that story Tuesday, two days before President Obama was slated to leave for Asia, including China,... Read more

Veterans Day salutes

Last updated on: November 11, 2009 at 6:00 am   By Gene Veith

Today is Veterans Day. Why today? Because the fighting in World War I ended, according to the terms of the armistice of 1918, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. I salute all of you veterans today. Specifically, I would like to honor my father-in-law, who was one of the few survivors of his unit on Iwo Jima (and if he didn’t make it, my wife and thus my children and grandchildren would cease to... Read more

Martin Luther and James Madison

I came across this recently, a Letter from James Madison to F.L. Schaeffer, dated 1821, in which the Father of the Constitution and the author of the Bill of Rights credits Luther with his doctrine of the Two Kingdoms for the American handling of church and state: Revd Sir, –I have received, with your letter of November 19th, the copy of your address at the ceremonial of laying the corner-stone of St Matthew's Church in New York. It is a... Read more

Strategic reassurance

Two long-time foreign policy experts, Robert Kagan and Dan Blumenthal, critique the Obama administration’s policy towards Russia and China: The Obama administration's worldview is still emerging, but its policies toward Russia and China are already revealing. Its Russia policy consists of trying to accommodate Moscow's sense of global entitlement. So far that has meant ignoring the continued presence of Russian forces on Georgian territory, negotiating arms-control agreements that Moscow needs more than Washington does and acquiescing to Russian objections to... Read more

Lessons from our odd Sunday

With reference to yesterday’s post, here is what I think it all means: (1) Even small town America, without thinking about it or meaning to, is turning away from Christianity. (2) I need to remember to bring nature into my theologizing. (The Bible says that even the birds of the air love to take shelter in the house of God. Why shouldn’t sugar gliders? Maybe I was being too hard on “Dog Church.” Then again, think what would happen if... Read more

Health care bill restricts abortion, so some liberals oppose it

Last updated on: November 10, 2009 at 5:49 am   By Gene Veith

Some liberal Democrats would rather not have a health care bill than have one that restricts abortion. From Some Democrats to fight abortion amendment in health bill – washingtonpost.com: President Obama and Senate Democrats sought on Sunday to generate momentum from the House's passage of health-care legislation, even as a new hurdle emerged: profound dismay among abortion-rights supporters over antiabortion provisions inserted into the House bill. The House passed its version of health-care legislation Saturday night by a vote of... Read more

Rupert Murdoch is considering yanking his many news operations–which include Fox News–from being accessed by Google: Mr. Murdoch said that consumers shouldn’t have had free access to information online that they paid for in other formats. “I think we’ve been asleep,” he said. “It costs us a lot of money to put together good newspapers and good content. They’re very happy to pay for it when they buy a newspaper, and I think when they read it elsewhere they’re going... Read more

Germany’s dull and effective chancellor

Last updated on: November 10, 2009 at 5:01 am   By Gene Veith

Angela Merkel won a big victory in Germany, with her conservative coalition trouncing the socialists and other leftist parties, strengthening her hand as Chancellor. Anne Applebaum comments: Merkel's achievement is far greater than it seems. She is a soft-spoken, even-tempered and, frankly, dull pragmatist who has compared her economic program to that of a "Swabian housewife." Her campaigns are the most boring anyone can remember. Despite the decisiveness of her recent victory, she humbly declared that she "respected those who... Read more

Our squirrelly Sunday

Last updated on: November 9, 2009 at 6:00 am   By Gene Veith

Sunday was one of the oddest days I have ever known. It was our grandson’s third birthday, so it all had a festive air, but it was a day of exceedingly strange happenings. We went off to church. But it turns out, our little town was holding a 5K run. On Sunday morning! That’s bad enough, scheduling such a thing to compete with church services. But to make it worse, the police had blocked off all of the main streets.... Read more
