Union sees Boy Scout volunteerism as scab labor
Last updated on: November 17, 2009 at 5:13 am By Gene Veith
Union troubled by Eagle Scout project in Allentown: In pursuit of an Eagle Scout badge, Kevin Anderson, 17, has toiled for more than 200 hours hours over several weeks to clear a walking path in an east Allentown park. Little did the do-gooder know that his altruistic act would put him in the cross hairs of the city's largest municipal union. Nick Balzano, president of the local Service Employees International Union, told Allentown City Council Tuesday that the union is... Read more

Health care reform will increase deficits AND costs
Last updated on: November 17, 2009 at 5:04 am By Gene Veith
Robert J. Samuelson is an economics columnist who has never struck me as particularly conservative. But he delivers a pretty devastating critique of the current schemes for health care reform. He makes the point that the goals of health care reform are contradictory and that there is nothing in these bills that will do what the administration says must be done, namely, lower the nation’s health care costs. On the contrary, these schemes will mean that even more of our... Read more

Atheists questioning their atheism
Last updated on: November 16, 2009 at 6:02 am By Gene Veith
Chuck Colson notes how several prominent atheists have changed their tunes: Well-known scholar Antony Flew was the first, saying he had to go "where the evidence [led]." Evolutionary theory, he concluded, has no reasonable explanation for the origin of life. When I met with Flew in Oxford, he told me that while he had not come to believe in the biblical God, he had concluded that atheism is not logically sustainable. More recently, A. N. Wilson, once thought to be... Read more

9/11 planners to be tried in New York
Last updated on: November 16, 2009 at 6:00 am By Gene Veith
The mastermind of the September 11 attacks, Khalid Sheik Mohammed, as well as four of his other conspirators, will be tried in New York City. The Obama administration has decided to try them in criminal court rather than by a military tribunal in Guantanamo. Do you think this is a good idea? Consider this: Mohammed has made clear that he looks to spin an inspiring tale of martyrdom in the cause of God and a victory over a mighty infidel... Read more

Pro-lifers co-opting Health Care Reform
Last updated on: November 16, 2009 at 5:44 am By Gene Veith
More on the Health Care Reform bill as a way to reduce the number of abortions in light of the Stupak-Pitts Amendment that would prevent both public and private insurance companies in the subsidize “pool” from funding abortion: Universal health care is a Democratic and liberal goal, but as long as the ban stands, increasing government support for those who lack insurance likely means more restricted coverage for abortions. Richard Doerflinger of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has been... Read more

Death of a church musician
Last updated on: November 13, 2009 at 6:00 am By Gene Veith
Church musician Paul Manz died on October 28. An organ virtuoso and respected choral composer, Manz’s best known work is “E’en so Lord Jesus Quickly Come.” It was composed while his 3 year-old son lay dying, it was supposed, though he recovered from his illness, something Manz attributed to prayer. Here is a haunting performance of that piece, with the backdrop of Luther’s church in Wittenberg. HT: Rev. Edward Bryant Read more

Catholics will stop social services if D.C. passes gay marriage law
Last updated on: November 13, 2009 at 5:45 am By Gene Veith
Catholic Church gives D.C. ultimatum on same-sex marriage issue – washingtonpost.com: The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington said Wednesday that it will be unable to continue the social service programs it runs for the District if the city doesn't change a proposed same-sex marriage law, a threat that could affect tens of thousands of people the church helps with adoption, homelessness and health care. Under the bill, headed for a D.C. Council vote next month, religious organizations would not be required... Read more

Abortion funding ban may stand in Health Care Reform bill
Last updated on: November 13, 2009 at 5:35 am By Gene Veith
Columnist E.J. Dionne is a liberal Democrat and a Catholic. He says that the ban on abortion funding in both the public and the private insurance companies that was added to the health care reform bill may stand, and if it does, it would be worth it: For some years, Democrats have denounced parodies that cast their party as utterly closed to the views of those who oppose abortion. Last weekend, Democrats proved conclusively that they are, indeed, a big... Read more

A child with three parents
Last updated on: November 13, 2009 at 5:00 am By Gene Veith
'Three parent babies' take a step closer to reality – Telegraph: Researchers used eggs from young donors to repair damaged eggs of older women in order to increase their chances of fertilisation. They have not yet used the eggs to produce babies, but they have injected them with sperm to produce an early stage embryo in the laboratory. While the move breathes new life into "old eggs" and could also remove genetic illnesses, it is likely to provoke an ethical... Read more

Good names for towns
Last updated on: November 12, 2009 at 5:45 am By Gene Veith
tODD and I got this going in the comment thread on my post about last Sunday, and I can’t resist opening it up to the rest of you. I said I liked the name Walla Walla, in Washington. He came back with other towns in that fair state: Sequim (pronounced “squim”) and Puyallup (”pyoo-wallop”). I rejoined with “Hicksville, Indiana.” What are some other good–in the sense of amusing or interesting or fun to pronounce–names of small towns? If you live... Read more
