So if the 9/11 planners get acquitted in their trial in New York City, they will not be released? They will THEN become enemy combatants? Holder suggests acquittal won't free terrorist : Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. let stand Wednesday a claim that confessed Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed will remain in U.S. custody even if he is acquitted in the so-called "trial of the century" scheduled for a New York courtroom. The claim arose during a tense... Read more

ELCA splits!

Last updated on: November 19, 2009 at 12:16 pm   By Gene Veith

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, like the Episcopalians, have split over homosexuality. A new church body is now being organized, consisting of congregations that reject the ELCA’s decision to allow non-celibate homosexuals to serve as pastors: Conservative members of America’s largest Lutheran denomination announced that they are splitting from the Chicago-based Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, making it the second mainline Protestant church to undergo a major schism over the issue of homosexuality and related matters of biblical authority.... Read more

Chesterton’s fence

Kevin Staley-Joyce at the First Things blog quotes a great passage from the great G. K. Chesterton (from The Thing): In the matter of reforming things, as distinct from deforming them, there is one plain and simple principle; a principle which will probably be called a paradox. There exists in such a case a certain institution or law; let us say for the sake of simplicity, a fence or gate erected across a road. The more modern type of reformer... Read more

How to defend Khalid Sheikh Mohammed

Last updated on: November 19, 2009 at 5:23 am   By Gene Veith

Attorney Dan Miller takes up the question How Hard Will It Be to Convict Khalid Sheikh Mohammed? He points out that trying him in a civilian trial in New York City will involve prosecutors running a gauntlet of legalities, any one of which could lead to dismissing the case against the admitted mastermind of 9/11. His lawyers could claim that his right to a speedy trial has been violated, since he was arrested way back in 2003. Potential witnesses are... Read more

AP assigns 11 fact-checkers to Palin’s book, but none to others

Last updated on: November 19, 2009 at 5:00 am   By Gene Veith

The Associated Press assigned 11 reporters to fact check Sarah Palin’s book. They found only minor questions on already-known disputed points. But they didn’t give this level of scrutiny to books by President Obama, Vice-President Biden, or other political figures. Why would this be? When the former Republican vice presidential candidate and former Alaska governor wrote her autobiography, the AP found a copy before its release date and assigned 11 people to fact check all 432 pages. . . .... Read more

Why do gays come across better than their Christian critics?

Last updated on: November 18, 2009 at 6:00 am   By Gene Veith

Consider Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank’s account of a rally against the hate-crime bill: Conservative Christian ministers from across the land, determined to test the bounds of a new law punishing anti-gay hate crimes, assembled outside the Justice Department on Monday to denounce the sin of homosexuality and see whether they would be charged with lawbreaking. Anything other than sex "between a male and his wedded wife," announced the Rev. Paul Blair, "is a perversion, and the Bible says that... Read more

Abortion rates in red states & blue states

Last updated on: November 18, 2009 at 5:30 am   By Gene Veith

Michael Barone gives a state-by-state breakdown of abortion rates. He concludes that there is a pretty strong correlation between the way a state votes and its abortion rates, with liberal states having lots of abortions and conservative states having fewer. That may seem obvious, and yet other correlations break down, with conservative states often having higher divorce rates than liberal states: Roe v. Wade imposed the same legal abortion regime on the entire nation and made abortion a national political... Read more

Republicans can’t stop confirmation of left wing judge

Last updated on: November 18, 2009 at 5:00 am   By Gene Veith

Republican senators tried a filibuster against President Obama’s left wing nominee for a judgeship on the federal court of appeals, but Democrats thwarted the tactic. Democrats on Tuesday crushed a Senate filibuster against a controversial appeals court nominee, demonstrating to Republicans they can't stop President Barack Obama from turning the federal judiciary to the left. The 70-29 vote limited debate over the qualifications of U.S. District Judge David Hamilton of Indiana, and assured his elevation to the Chicago-based appeals court.... Read more

Sarah Palin: The Book

Sarah Palin’s book is out today. A friend of mine, Lynn Vincent, helped her write it. (I don’t see a credit line on the cover, at least, so that’s disappointing.) Are you going to buy it? (If so, you might as well click on the icon below and let the Cranach Institute get a commission.) Why is there such hype about this book, which the media could easily have ignored as it does most political biographies, and yet it is... Read more

Non-religious chaplains

Last updated on: November 17, 2009 at 6:00 am   By Gene Veith

Now non-religious students are clamoring for non-religious chaplains to minister to their spiritual needs: While many higher-education institutions have been affiliated with particular religions since their founding, there has been a broad movement in recent years to accommodate religious diversity by enlisting additional chaplains to serve different faith groups, such as Muslims, Jews, Hindus and various Christian denominations that might not have been present at institutions’ foundings. Now an organization of non-religious students at Tufts University is saying: Hey, what... Read more
