New Year’s Resolutions
Last updated on: December 31, 2009 at 5:30 am By Gene Veith
Another holiday custom we might as well play: New Year’s Resolutions. A story in the Philadelphia Inquirer recounts some good ones: "I'm swearing off e-mail on the weekends," said Matt Kinservik. "And absolutely no work on Sundays." . . . [Mara] Gorman, a freelance writer, is presenting herself with an equally daunting challenge. "I'm going to say no less often to my kids and more often to everyone else." . . . Carlos Mejia, a 31-year-old graduate student at the... Read more

The Liberty Cap
Last updated on: December 31, 2009 at 5:00 am By Gene Veith
My son and I went into D.C. yesterday. I can tell you that the brand new Capitol Visitors’ Center makes touring the Capitol much easier. No longer do you need to go through your Congressman or Senator for a good tour, or stand outside by daybreak to get a ticket for a tour much later in the day. You can reserve a time online, or, especially in the off season, just walk up and get a ticket. We also visited... Read more

The top stories of 2009
Last updated on: December 30, 2009 at 6:00 am By Gene Veith
Here are the top news stories of 2009 according to an Associated Press poll of the nation’s newspaper editors and news directors: 1. THE ECONOMY: Despite a $787 billion federal stimulus package, much of the U.S. economy continued to sputter throughout the year. The jobless rate topped 10 percent, scores of banks failed, the federal deficit tripled to a record $1.4 trillion, and stocks fell to their lowest levels since 1997 before rallying. Yet investment banks’ profits surged, triggering public... Read more

Dave Barry’s year in review
Last updated on: December 30, 2009 at 5:50 am By Gene Veith
One of my New Year’s customs is to contemplate the year gone by, month by month, with the help of Dave Barry. A sampling, but you’ll want to read the whole thing: FEBRUARY Congress passes, without reading it, and without actually finishing writing it, a stimulus package totaling $787 billion. The money is immediately turned over to American taxpayers so they can use it to stimulate the economy. No! What a crazy idea THAT would be! The money is to... Read more

Underwear bomber planners were Gitmo alums
Last updated on: December 30, 2009 at 5:30 am By Gene Veith
ABC reports that al Qaeda Leaders Behind Terror Plot Were Released by U.S.: Two of the four leaders allegedly behind the al Qaeda plot to blow up a Northwest Airlines passenger jet over Detroit were released by the U.S. from the Guantanamo prison in November, 2007, according to American officials and Department of Defense documents. Al Qaeda claimed responsibility for the Northwest bombing in a Monday statement that vowed more attacks on Americans. American officials agreed to send the two... Read more

War in Yemen?
Last updated on: December 30, 2009 at 5:00 am By Gene Veith
It seems that Al Qaeda’s base of operations is now Yemen, not Afghanistan. That country on the Arabian peninsula is where the Nigerian bomber got his training and where new threats are coming from. President Obama has said that our quarrel is not with Islamic radicals in general, just Al Qaeda. So should we now invade Yemen? Just before Christmas, American forces participated with those of the Yemeni government in an air strike said to have killed 30 al Qaeda... Read more

Cranach Year in Review
Last updated on: December 29, 2009 at 6:00 am By Gene Veith
One way I celebrate the New Year is to look back upon the year that has just gone by. I do that by looking at the various “year in review” features, as well as by contemplating the year gone by in my own life. This year we also move into a new decade, so we can also think about the “decade in review.” We’ll be playing around with some of that in this blog as we count down to the... Read more

The Underwear Bomber
Last updated on: December 29, 2009 at 5:57 am By Gene Veith
We have had the Shoe Bomber. Now we have the Underwear Bomber. The jihadist from Nigeria who was set to take down an airliner flying into Detroit hid the explosives in his underwear. Go here for the pictures if you can handle them. His tactic was to ignite the explosives, which were more than enough to blow a hole in the airplane, by covering up with a blanket and then using a plastic syringe (how did he get that onboard?)... Wordclouds of the Bible

You must see Sixty-Six Clouds, which gives wordclouds (computerized breakdowns of word frequency with the most used words given in proportionally larger fonts) for each book of the Bible. Here is the Psalms: Here is Isaiah: Here is Luke: Here is Romans: These are also examples of excellent graphic design in arranging the results. Read more

Sweden seizes home-schooled child
Last updated on: December 29, 2009 at 5:00 am By Gene Veith
The Christian Telegraph reports that Swedish government seizes child from home schooling family: A Christian home schooling family could permanently lose custody of their only child simply because they home-school, reports LifeSiteNews.com. . . . Swedish authorities forcibly removed Dominic Johansson from his parents, Christer and Annie Johansson, in June of last year from a plane they had boarded to move to Annie’s home country of India. The officials did not have a warrant nor have they charged the Johanssons... Read more
