The fate of Christians in Iraq

A Catholic mission organization reports that since 2003, the year Saddam Hussein was overthrown, 1,960 Christians have been killed in Iraq and nearly half have fled their homes, either to safer regions of Iraq such as Kurdistan or have left the country entirely. Read more

Happy Epiphany!

Last updated on: January 7, 2010 at 12:15 am   By Gene Veith

January 6 is Epiphany, ending the 12 days of Christmas and beginning the season that it is also called Epiphany, referring to the revelation (the light coming on) as to who Jesus is. Epiphany celebrates the Wise Men’s pilgrimage to find the Baby Jesus. By extension, it celebrates that Christ is not just for the Jews but for Gentiles too, for the whole world. That is indeed something to celebrate. Read more

Put May 21, 2011 on your calendar

Radio evangelist Harold Camping has calculated that the Rapture (the ascension of all living Christians before Christ returns) will occur on May 21, 2011. What interests me is how that date was figured: By Camping's understanding, the Bible was dictated by God and every word and number carries a spiritual significance. He noticed that particular numbers appeared in the Bible at the same time particular themes are discussed. The number 5, Camping concluded, equals "atonement." Ten is "completeness." Seventeen means... Read more

Bushism on steroids?

The Washington Times may be fading away, but here is a parting shot from columnist Jeffrey T. Kuhner: The past decade will be remembered as the pivotal tipping point where the United States ceased to be a superpower. Like the Roman Empire in its later stages, America’s imperial grandeur masked moral rot and economic decay. The beginning of the 21st century promised continued U.S. global dominance. Our economic might seemed unrivaled; the dot-com boom had not yet gone bust. Washington... Read more

Virtual strip search scanners won’t catch key explosives

Last updated on: January 6, 2010 at 5:19 am   By Gene Veith

The TSA is working to put full body visual scanners that see through clothes in the world’s airports. But a British newspaper says what I had thought myself, that they will just see through low-density chemicals such as those used by the Underwear Bomber: Since the attack was foiled, body-scanners, using "millimetre-wave" technology and revealing a naked image of a passenger, have been touted as a solution to the problem of detecting explosive devices that are not picked up by... Read more

The 3-D movie is one-dimensional

I went to see Avatar on New Year’s Day. It was just awful–ludicrously, unintentionally-comically awful. The story was insufferable, making a clumsy parallel with the War in Iraq, just as you commenters who saw it reported. James Cameron had the idea for this movie for years, we are told, and back then in his circles our conflict in Iraq was all about the evil President Bush and how we were just fighting the war over oil. I wonder if Mr.... Read more

How do home-schooled kids do as adults?

Last updated on: January 5, 2010 at 5:52 am   By Gene Veith

Really well, according to a study of Canadian home-schooled adults: Despite what many might believe, a vast majority of home-schooled children say they have plenty of opportunities for socialization with other children and, as adults, come to excel in all measured areas of adult life, according to a new study. The study, released this month by the Canadian Centre for Home Education (CCHE), surveyed young adults in Canada whose parents responded to a 1994 study on home education. Ranging in... Read more

Special airport security for passengers from terror-prone nations

Last updated on: January 5, 2010 at 5:50 am   By Gene Veith

Airport security is finally narrowing down the passengers who will get special scrutiny. Passengers from 14 nations will all get pat-downs and luggage searches: “Afghanistan, Algeria, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia and Yemen are on the list as countries of interest. Cuba, Iran, Sudan and Syria are listed because they have long been identified as "state sponsors of terrorism" by the United States, NBC reported.” But some international airports–both of some of the singled-out countries and the... Read more

What’s in; what’s out

Last updated on: January 4, 2010 at 6:00 am   By Gene Veith

The fashion mavens at the Washington Post have put up their annual list of What’s in and What’s out for 2010. Understand that the list is highly tongue-in-cheek and meant to be humorous. Still, it suggests some signs of the times. True, we old people–defined as anyone married with children and so properly oblivious to fashion–will not know what many of these things even are. But ironically the feature itself suggests a development that is more significant than any of... Read more
