Insider report on Haiti
Last updated on: January 22, 2010 at 4:35 am By Gene Veith
I don’t know if you saw the comment from reader Kirk Anderson the other day, but he offers some good inside information on the situation in Haiti, especially as regards relief efforts: I work in the international development field and I’ve been on the phone with NGO partners in Haiti for the past few days. The general impression that I get is that lawlessness isn’t quite as prevalent as we’re lead to believe by the news media. There is, of... Read more

Cranach’s new look
Last updated on: January 21, 2010 at 6:00 am By Gene Veith
Most of us Cranachers are like Garth on “Wayne’s World”: We fear change. But I hope you like this new look. Stewart Lundy–he of the Fujimura interview, my tech guru, and a former student–offered to redesign the site in the course of some other work he is doing professionally. He can work wonders for you too. Go to Bulldog Technology. So how do you like this new design? The reconstruction is not yet complete, so we would appreciate your feedback... Read more

Scott Brown reconsidered
Last updated on: January 21, 2010 at 5:45 am By Gene Veith
Now that Scott Brown has taken away the Massachusetts Senate seat from the Democrats, he is being hailed as the savior of the Republican party and his tactics will be imitated across the land. Namely, hit economic responsibility hard, but stay away from social and moral issues. That’s also what Bob McDonnell did to win the governorship in Virginia. But he is at least pro-life. Brown is pro-death, being in favor of legalized abortion. I worry that in the current... Read more

Is health care reform dead?
Last updated on: January 21, 2010 at 5:20 am By Gene Veith
Some on both the left and right are saying, whether in despair or in elation, that the election of Scott Brown to the Senate and the consequent end of the Democrats’ filibuster proof supermajority means that health care reform is dead. But the Democrats have a bill before them, the House Bill, public option and all. The Democrats could just pass that. They could act before Brown is seated. Better yet, and easier accomplished, the House, which has no filibuster... Read more

Patrick Henry College wins national championship
Last updated on: January 21, 2010 at 5:00 am By Gene Veith
Patrick Henry College, which I help run and where I teach, won a national championship. Not in football or basketball, but in moot court, a competition which consists of arguing cases in a simulated appellate court. For the fourth time in six years, Patrick Henry College has won the ACMA National Moot Court Championship. The team of Rachel Heflin and Jenna Lorence beat a team from Baylor University, giving Heflin back-to-back titles and making her the tournament’s only two-time champion.... Read more

How God is in the world
Last updated on: January 20, 2010 at 6:00 am By Gene Veith
Longtime Cranach reader and commenter Dan Kempen “got” yesterday’s post Makoto Fujimura on art, paganism, and worship. His reflections are worth considering in themselves: God is in the world, not merely as the one who has authority over it, but as the one who is creating it. Even in a broken world, everything God creates is a work of art. Everything God creates is a masterpiece. There is a wonder of God in the created world that is both immanent... Read more

Republican victory in Massachusetts
Last updated on: January 20, 2010 at 5:45 am By Gene Veith
Republican Scott Brown upset the Democrat Martha Coakley in the Massachusetts senate race. This means the Democrats lose their filibuster-proof supermajority, enabling Republicans to block legislation. It also leaves the Democrats traumatized, losing the late Teddy Kennedy’s seat as Brown’s campaign theme of fiscal responsibility against President Obama’s spending won over one of the most liberal states in the nation. The Democrats’ tragedy of Greek proportions
Last updated on: January 20, 2010 at 5:30 am By Gene Veith
Liberal pundits are proclaiming doom and apocalypse at the prospect of Kennedy’s seat in the Senate going to a Massachusetts Republican, even before the election and the bitter news. So reports POLITICO.com: For the pundits on MSNBC and the liberal blogosphere, the prospect of a Scott Brown victory in the Massachusetts Senate race has provoked the kind of doomsday rhetoric not heard since a certain Texan was president. Liberal talker Ed Schultz recently told radio listeners that if he lived... Read more

American troops to Haiti
Last updated on: January 20, 2010 at 5:00 am By Gene Veith
The United States is sending 10,000 troops to Haiti to help with disaster relief. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates says, however, that they will have no policing role: The U.S. military expects to have around 10,000 troops in Haiti and in ships offshore by Monday for the massive relief effort. Haitian President Rene Preval said on Sunday that U.S. troops will help U.N. peacekeepers keep order on Haiti's streets, where overstretched police and U.N. peacekeepers have been unable to provide... Makoto Fujimura on art, paganism, and worship
Last updated on: January 19, 2010 at 6:06 am By Gene Veith
My former student and current. . . tech guru Stewart Lundy has a fascinating interview with via Makoto Fujimura, the acclaimed Japanese-American abstract artist who is also a devout Christian. Read the whole interview. What struck me the most was what he said about paganism and about worship: There is spiritual danger in Paganism, and as Origen stated (and recently quoted by Pope Benedict) Paganism is defined by “Lacking feeling and reason, they are transformed into stones and wood.” In...
