‘Avatar’ passes ‘Titanic’

Last updated on: January 26, 2010 at 6:00 am   By Gene Veith

“Avatar” passed another James Cameron movie, “Titanic,” as the top-grossing movie of all time, pulling in as of Sunday $1.292 billion worldwide.  The movie about the ship earned $1.242 billion. See this report. In my review of the movie, I found it visually spectacular, but with a painfully sappy and stereotyped story. Then again, that’s pretty much what I thought about “Titanic.” How do you explain “Avatar’s” appeal? Read more

The Gadarene rush

I quote George Will here  not to vaunt over liberals, as he does, but to relish his language, especially his Biblical allusion in the last of these sentences. Will first quotes the president, who said of the health care legislation, “We are on the precipice of an achievement that’s eluded Congresses and presidents for generations,” and then riffs on the metaphor: The 2008 elections gave liberals the curse of opportunity, and they have used it to reveal themselves ruinously. The... Read more

The political lessons of “American Idol”

Last updated on: January 26, 2010 at 5:17 am   By Gene Veith

Kevin Huffman draws out what politicians can learn from American Idol: As Scott Brown stormed to victory in the Massachusetts Senate race Tuesday night, I huddled with my daughters watching Fox. No, not the gloating election coverage on Fox News — I wouldn’t do that to impressionable young minds. We watched the flagship’s “American Idol” auditions. This seemed fitting since, four years ago, Ayla Brown, the senator-elect’s daughter, captivated my kids during a short-lived “American Idol” run (my eldest daughter... Read more

The right teams are in the Superbowl

Last updated on: January 26, 2010 at 5:00 am   By Gene Veith

The New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts will play in the Superbowl, as seems fitting. Both teams came close to having perfect seasons until the very end. That would have set up the most remarkable Superbowl ever. But still, though my own favorites didn’t make it, I have to say that these two teams being in the big game seems cosmically just, for once. Cosmic justice would end with New Orleans winning–making up for Hurricane Katrina and all that–but... Read more

The pro-life generation

The pro-abortionists are worried. Journalist Robert McCartney, one of their number, explains why: I went to the March for Life rally Friday on the Mall expecting to write about its irrelevance. Isn’t it quaint, I thought, that these abortion protesters show up each year on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, even though the decision still stands after 37 years. What’s more, with a Democrat in the White House likely to appoint justices who support abortion rights, surely the Supreme... Read more

Disciplining children

Last updated on: January 25, 2010 at 5:30 am   By Gene Veith

You’ve got to read Mollie Z. Hemingway’s article in the Wall Street Journal about disciplining children. Here is just a sample: Conservative Christian parenting is often unfairly presented as little more than “spare the rod, spoil the child,” advice distilled from the Bible's book of Proverbs. Spanking—punishment delivered with an open hand, not a rod—used to be socially acceptable and frequently utilized by parents, even in public. But at some point in the past century, child-rearing books began discouraging spanking... Read more

Rev. Matt Harrison, head of Lutheran World Relief & Human Care, is on the ground in Haiti Mercy Journeys with Pastor Harrison blogging about the work of LCMS pastoral and medical teams.  A sample: I’ve never been so proud and humbled to be a member of the LCMS. Words that also mean the opposite of themselves

In yesterday’s post about Patrick Henry College’s national championship in moot court, tODD commented that “the word ‘moot’ is used rather bizarrely in common parlance. I know that etymologically speaking, it means ‘meeting’ (Entmoot, anyone?). But it is frequently used to mean ‘not worth debating,’ in near opposition to its primary definition of ‘debatable.’ Carl Vehse came back with this: “tODD has just pointed out one of the English words that is an auto-antonym (AKA antagonym, contranym, Janus word, enantiodrome,... Read more

Supremes throw out much of McCain-Feingold

Last updated on: January 22, 2010 at 5:00 am   By Gene Veith

The Supreme Court overturned much of the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law, ruling that the First Amendment forbids criminal sanctions against political speech: Overruling two important precedents about the First Amendment rights of corporations, a bitterly divided Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that the government may not ban political spending by corporations in candidate elections. The 5-to-4 decision was a vindication, the majority said, of the First Amendment’s most basic free speech principle — that the government has no business regulating... Read more

Yet another conservative victory

Last updated on: January 22, 2010 at 4:49 am   By Gene Veith

Scott Brown takes the Kennedy seat in the Senate, McCain-Feingold gets gutted, and now this: Air America Radio, a radio network that was launched in 2004 as a liberal alternative to Rush Limbaugh and other conservative commentators, on Thursday shut down abruptly due to financial woes. The network once boasted hosts such as Al Franken and Rachel Maddow, but struggled from the outset, including multiple management shake-ups, a bankruptcy in 2006 and sale for $4.25 million the following year.
