Football stadium for sale, cheap

Last updated on: February 2, 2010 at 5:30 am   By Gene Veith

How far have real estate prices fallen?  The Silverdome, former home of the Detroit Lions, just sold for $583,000.  The  80,300-seat stadium came with 127 acres of land. That’s about the price of a McMansion before the real estate market collapsed.  I hope the buyer turns the Silverdome into a home.  It has lots of bathrooms and plenty of cooking areas.  The locker rooms could be turned into bedrooms.  Turn the playing field into a really big family room.  Put a... Read more

Recluse or just from a small town?

Last updated on: February 2, 2010 at 5:00 am   By Gene Veith

Maybe J. D. Salinger wasn’t a recluse after all. Maybe he just lived in a small town and nobody could find him. This report describes the novelist’s life in Cornish, New Hampshire, including his love of church dinners: Mr. Salinger was just Jerry, a quiet man who arrived early to church suppers, nodded hello while buying a newspaper at the general store and wrote a thank-you note to the fire department after it extinguished a blaze and helped save his... Read more

The Maddy Curtis concert

Last updated on: February 1, 2010 at 6:00 am   By Gene Veith

Remember my blog post with video of Maddy Curtis, the 16-year-old American Idol contestant who turned out to live in the next town over from us? Well, this weekend she put on a benefit concert to raise money for Haiti at our local community arts center. My daughter and I took it in, and it was a really good show. Maddy has a very beautiful and very mature voice. Not the typical American Idol over-the-top big voice, but one that... Read more

Filibuster

Last updated on: February 1, 2010 at 5:30 am   By Gene Veith

Now that Democrats have lost their filibuster-proof supermajority, some are clamoring to eliminate the filibuster.  That refers to the traditional Senate principle allowing unlimited debate apart from a vote of cloture.  That means that any Senator can keep talking on an issue, preventing it from coming up for a vote, unless 60 Senators vote  to end debate.  In practice, this means that bills need 60 votes just to get to the floor for action.  Here is a non-partisan defense of... Read more

Abortion as game show

Last updated on: February 1, 2010 at 5:18 am   By Gene Veith

Starting today, a web-based video series entitled “Bump” will begin, featuring three fictional women who are trying to decide whether or not to get an abortion.  Viewers will then VOTE, American-Idol style, to determine whether the women will abort their child.  I want to stress that all of the women are FICTIONAL, so no one will really get an abortion.  The purpose is supposedly to provoke positive discussion–which will also take place from viewers on the site–about the “choice” that... Read more

The Grammy Awards

Taylor Swift took most of the country music Grammies.  I can see that.  The child sounds more country than many of her elders in the industry, and she has crossover appeal to boot.   Someone else can comment on the rest of the winners, most of whom I haven’t heard, having become more out of touch than I used to be.   Go here for the winners. Which of them do you think I’d like? Read more

Jokes

Remember jokes? Brief little stories with a funny ending? It seems to me that people don’t tell jokes any more like they used to. Instead they make snide remarks. Even comedians don’t tell jokes much today. Instead they make wry observations and tell about their experiences. So to kick off our Saturday blog, let’s bring back the art form of the joke. What jokes do you know? Ground rules: No jokes that are dirty, demeaning, or offensive. We want to... Read more

J. D. Salinger dies

Last updated on: January 29, 2010 at 5:30 am   By Gene Veith

J. D. Salinger is dead at 91.  After achieving spectacular success with Catcher in the Rye and a handful of other brief novels and short stories in the 1950s, Salinger renounced his celebrity and became a recluse for the rest of his life.  And yet, word is that Salinger may have kept writing and that his safe may contain as many as 15 completed manuscripts. “There is a marvelous peace in not publishing,” he  told The New York Times in 1974.... Read more

President vs. Prime Minister

Last updated on: January 29, 2010 at 5:18 am   By Gene Veith

Fareed Zakaria suggests that President Obama’s problem is that he has been acting like a Prime Minister–the head of his party in a parliamentary system–rather than a President, the head of state: Over the past six months — which have correlated with his dramatic drop in the polls — Obama has behaved less like a president and more like a prime minister. He has not outlined a broad vision for the country. He has not embraced the best solutions —... Read more
