Gays’ open marriages

Last updated on: February 5, 2010 at 5:56 am   By Gene Veith

Joe Carter discusses a New York Times article on a particular characteristic of gay marriages: they tend to not require fidelity to one partner. From Many Successful Gay Marriages Share an Open Secret – NYTimes.com: As the trial phase of the constitutional battle to overturn the Proposition 8 ban on same-sex marriage concludes in federal court, gay nuptials are portrayed by opponents as an effort to rewrite the traditional rules of matrimony. Quietly, outside of the news media and courtroom... Read more

Vegetative patients with active minds

Last updated on: February 5, 2010 at 5:45 am   By Gene Veith

A new study has found that many comatose patients dismissed as “vegetables” have active minds: In a study certain to rekindle debate over life-sustaining care for those with grievous brain injuries, researchers report that five patients thought to be in a persistent vegetative state showed brain activity indicating awareness, intent and, in at least one case, a wish to communicate. Of 54 unresponsive patients whose brains were scanned at medical centers in England and Belgium, those five appeared able, when... Read more

Abstinence education is effective after all

Last updated on: February 5, 2010 at 5:29 am   By Gene Veith

A heavy-duty study published in the peer-reviewed Archive of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine has determined that, contrary to the latest conventional wisdom, abstinence education IS effective in reducing sexual activity in adolescents, more so than other approaches to sex education. HT to Webmonk for pointing me to the original study, which some news reports are not quite understanding. Here is the study, which gives this overview: Objective To evaluate the efficacy of an abstinence-only intervention in preventing sexual involvement in... Read more

So said five of the country’s top intelligence officials before a congressional hearing.  “Certain”!  Who makes predictions using that word anymore?  The evidence of an impending attack must be overwhelming. Opening the military to gays

Last updated on: February 4, 2010 at 5:15 am   By Gene Veith

The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, following the lead of his Commander-in-Chief, has come out against the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy and is saying gays should serve openly: The nation’s top military officer said Tuesday that he supported allowing gays to openly serve — adding a powerful voice to the deeply controversial issue as the Pentagon announced steps to prepare for possibly ending its 17-year ban on homosexuality. The Air Force Academy used to be considered a hotbed of Christian activity.  Now the chapel program  is adding a stone circle for use by pagan cadets: The Air Force Academy chapel will add a worship area for followers of Earth-centered religions during a dedication ceremony, which is tentatively scheduled to be held at the circle March 10. Lost

I don’t watch much TV. I really don’t. But I did get hooked on Lost. This season that convoluted narrative comes to an end, and the producers say that every loose end will be tied together, every mystery solved, and every plot line resolved. So how do you think it will end? Will it be. . . (1) The Bob Newhart ending? (It was all a dream.) (2) The Sixth Sense ending? (They are all dead.) (3) The Matrix ending?... Read more

Defending Tebow’s Super Bowl ad

Last updated on: February 3, 2010 at 5:30 am   By Gene Veith

Sally Jenkins in the Washington Post just tears apart the critics of the pro-life ad featuring Tim Tebow that will run during the Super Bowl. From her column Tebow’s Super Bowl ad isn’t intolerant; its critics are: As statements at Super Bowls go, I prefer the idea of Tebow's pro-life ad to, say, Jim McMahon dropping his pants, as the former Chicago Bears quarterback once did in response to a question. We're always harping on athletes to be more responsible... Read more

Women vs. women

Please notice that I am not saying this.  A feminist is saying this.  I myself don’t believe it and am personally offended on behalf of women everywhere.  But this is what Anne Kornblut says in her book Notes from the Cracked Ceiling, an account of the political campaigns of Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin and why women have a hard time in politics: <blockquote>”Female candidates also have to remember that women can be deeply suspicious and critical of one another.... Read more
