Why Holy Week is holy
Last updated on: March 29, 2010 at 5:45 am By Gene Veith
“For we call this Holy Week not just because of the holy things that happened,or because of the Holy One they happened to –but because this is the week that makes you holy.” Rev. James Douthwaite. Read more

“When He sees that their power is gone”
Last updated on: March 29, 2010 at 5:30 am By Gene Veith
We had a wonderful Palm Sunday service, and the sermon was on a text that I don’t think I’ve ever noticed before, Deuteronomy 32:36-39. Moses says that “When he sees that their power is gone,” that is the time when “the Lord will vindicate his people and have compassion on his servants.” When their power is gone! What a passage for Law & Gospel and the Theology of the Cross vs. the Theology of Glory! Postmodernists reduce everything–culture, law, government,... Read more

Songs about Vocation
Last updated on: March 27, 2010 at 5:15 am By Gene Veith
As I mentioned, I’ve been doing a series of interviews on Issues, Etc., about the new edition of my book Spirituality of the Cross Revised Edition. When we were talking about my chapter on Vocation, the producers were playing some music to go along with it. One piece was Bob Dylan’s You’ve Got to Serve Somebody! Another was even more to the point, Eric and Polly Rapp’s More Than Enough. What a good song! Click to the site and listen... Read more

Spring training reports
Last updated on: March 27, 2010 at 5:02 am By Gene Veith
Spring training! Hope springs anew. Even for the Washington Nationals, last place though they were last year. They stocked up on promising young pitchers and signed the aging future Hall of Famer Ivan Rodriguez to catch them. And the pitching phenomenon Steven Strasburg they drafted looks amazing, though he will start in the minors, as is right and fitting. Here is an account of his first outing: Facing a collection of Nationals players likely to start the year in Class... Read more

Church offerings in the recession
Last updated on: March 26, 2010 at 6:00 am By Gene Veith
Religion journalist Julia Duin reports on church giving during the recession: The nation’s churches are staggering under the depressed economy, with more than one-third reporting decreases in giving last year, according to a survey. A “State of the Plate” survey of 1,017 churches sponsored by Christianity Today International (CTI) and the Colorado Springs firm Maximum Generosity reported that 38 percent saw their income drop in 2009, compared with 29 percent seeing drops in 2008. Although the report did not specify... Read more

Global warming policies vs. Africa
Last updated on: March 26, 2010 at 5:45 am By Gene Veith
The veteran civil rights activist Roy Innis is blasting the administration for the way its policies to combat the alleged global warming are devastating Africa: The president signed an executive order requiring that the Overseas Private Investment Corp. (OPIC) and other federal agencies reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with their projects by 30 percent over the next 10 years. The order undermines the ability of sub-Saharan African nations to achieve progress in energy and economic and human rights. Ghana is... Read more

China’s decree to journalists & bloggers
Last updated on: March 26, 2010 at 5:30 am By Gene Veith
We have posted about the conflict between still-communist China and Google. The “Washington Post” has obtained a translation of the instructions from the Chinese government to its web journalists and bloggers, explaining what they will not be allowed to talk about. From China’s instructions on reporting on Google: All chief editors and managers: Google has officially announced its withdrawal from the China market. This is a high-impact incident. It has triggered netizens' discussions which are not limited to a commercial... Read more

The day Mary conceived our Lord
Last updated on: March 25, 2010 at 8:38 am By Gene Veith
Today is Annunciation Day, celebrating the day the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and told her that she would bear, through the Holy Spirit, Christ the Savior. Think of the implications of this conception: Christ the embryo, Christ the Fetus! Here is Luther preaching on Annunciation Day: It almost seems as though God is at enmity with the world. Present conditions are so shameful all around us in the world, as God allows murderous mobs and rabble, so much violence... Read more

To stupak
Last updated on: March 25, 2010 at 5:15 am By Gene Veith
Bart Stupak, the pro-life Democratic congressman from Michigan, went from a hero to a goat in a single moment. With his blocking of the health care reform bill unless it included anti-abortion provisions, pro-lifers were thinking they too might be able to become Democrats after all. But then came his press conference in which he agreed to accept the bill on the basis of a presidential executive order saying tax money will not be used to pay for abortions, something... Read more

“Gee, I hope this works”
Last updated on: March 25, 2010 at 5:08 am By Gene Veith
Ruth Marcus BELIEVES in the new health care reform law. But she points out that no one knows exactly what it will do: If I were a member of Congress, my floor speech before casting a yes vote would have boiled down to: Gee, I hope this works. One of the astonishing aspects of the health-care debate is how little is actually known about the implications of a change this far-reaching. Everyone has a theory, and a model to match,...
