Court kills FCC plan to regulate internet providers

Last updated on: April 9, 2010 at 5:00 am By Gene Veith

A court rules that the FCC may not regulate internet providers, so as to require “net neutrality.” The Federal Communications Commission does not have the legal authority to slap Net neutrality regulations on Internet providers, a federal appeals court ruled Tuesday. A three-judge panel in Washington, D.C. unanimously tossed out the FCC’s August 2008 cease and desist order against Comcast, which had taken measures to slow BitTorrent transfers before voluntarily ending them earlier that year. Because the FCC “has failed... Read more

What evangelicals need from Lutheranism (and vice versa?)

Last updated on: April 8, 2010 at 6:00 am By Gene Veith

The late Internet Monk, Michael Spencer, who just passed away, was ecstatic about the new resources for theology and spirituality recently published by Concordia Publishing House: the Concordia (the reader’s edition of the Book of Concord), the Treasure of Daily Prayer, and now the Lutheran Study Bible. In the course of his rave review of the latter, he expressed his frustration with Lutheranism, which tends to keep to itself even though its emphases are exactly what the broader Christian and... Read more

On vows of celibacy & sexual sin

Last updated on: April 8, 2010 at 5:45 am By Gene Veith

Luther and the Lutheran Confessions (explaining “thou shalt not commit adultery”) on the problems of forbidding marriage for the clergy, and how this manifests itself in sexual sins: Priests, monks, and nuns resist God’s order and commandment, inasmuch as they despise and forbid matrimony, and presume and vow to maintain perpetual chastity, and, besides, deceive the simple-minded with lying words and appearances [impostures]. For no one has so little love and inclination to chastity as just those who because of... Read more

Lifting the nuclear deterrent

The President has announced a new nuclear weapons policy, which includes not developing any new ones and promising not to use nukes to retaliate against a non-nuclear attack, even one that uses biological or chemical weapons of mass destruction. From Obama Limits When U.S. Would Use Nuclear Arms – NYTimes.com: President Obama said Monday that he was revamping American nuclear strategy to substantially narrow the conditions under which the United States would use nuclear weapons. But the president said in... Read more

The Hutaree

Last updated on: April 7, 2010 at 5:30 am By Gene Veith

Have you heard about the Christian militia cult known as the Hutaree? They have been busted as domestic terrorists. [David] Stone and eight other suspected Hutaree members, self-proclaimed “Christian warriors” who trained themselves in paramilitary techniques in preparation for a battle against the Antichrist, are charged with seditious conspiracy, or plotting to levy war against the U.S. They were arrested after a series of weekend raids across the Midwest. Prosecutors say the group planned to make a false 911 call,... Read more

A conversation about the Hutaree

It was tODD, who is politically more liberal than most denizens of this blog (though arguably more theologically conservative than most denizens of this blog, Wisconsin Synod Lutheran that he is), who urged me to post something about the Hutaree (above). That started an e-mail conversation that I thought was worth posting in itself. Here are excerpts, arranged in dramatic form: tODD: This story (also) has everything for conservatives! Christianity! Eschatology! And a strong belief in a limited federal government... Read more

Death of the Internet Monk

Last updated on: April 7, 2010 at 4:59 am By Gene Veith

Michael Spencer, a.k.a. Internet Monk, has died of cancer. (Not to be confused with our own commenter on this blog Webmonk, who is still alive.) His blog, subtitled “Dispatches from the post-evangelical wilderness,” was a favorite site for honest theological and spiritual discussions. A Baptist minister who strugged with some of the trappings of evangelicalism, Spencer was influenced by, among others, the Christ-centered, Gospel-centered emphasis of Lutheranism, though he bemoaned the way Lutherans tend to shut themselves off from... Read more

Christian yoga

Last updated on: April 6, 2010 at 6:00 am By Gene Veith

Yoga construed as just a physical exercise is probably fine. But some people are emphasizing its religious content. And some Christians are trying to make that religious content Christian. Christian pop music played quietly in the background as instructor Bryan Brock led a recent yoga class at the nondenominational Church at Rocky Peak in Chatsworth. Incorporating prayer and readings from the Bible, Brock urged his class of about 20 students to find strength in their connection to their creator through... Read more

3-D, or not 3-D

Last updated on: April 6, 2010 at 5:45 am By Gene Veith

That is the question in today’s film industry. “Avatar” was a huge hit, with ground-breaking technological innovations that brought 3-D filmmaking back to life. But now scores of movie makers are rushing to convert movies already in the can to 3-D. That’s what happened with “Alice in Wonderland” and now with “Clash of the Titans.” “Avatar”-director and innovator James Cameron, along with other purists, are scorning these 3-D effects on the cheap, claiming they are inferior. But many movie goers... Read more

Pedophile priests & liberal Catholicism

Last updated on: April 6, 2010 at 5:15 am By Gene Veith

Joseph Bottum, editor of First Things, points out that the cases of the pedophile priests come from the 1970s, when theological liberalism was rampant in Catholicism. He says that the lack of recent cases reflect a more conservative church and a generation of more faithful priests: There are two parts to the scandal that has obsessed Europe in recent weeks. The first part — the most evil, disgusting part — is over. Every group has a small percentage of members... Read more
