A book that changed your life

Booklover raised the ante on yesterday’s post about books that have influenced your political beliefs, asking if a book CHANGED your views, or just confirmed what you already believed. Let’s ramp it up even more: Has there been a book that changed your life in some way? Let’s not limit it to politics or ideology. Has a book changed your faith or your theology? Your approach to your family, your work, your everyday life? Not counting the Bible. I’ll go... Read more

Tourism as a human right

Now that America is going the way of Europe in our economy, politics, and institutions, get ready for this one: An overseas holiday used to be thought of as a reward for a year’s hard work. Now Brussels [the capital of the European Union] has declared that tourism is a human right and pensioners, youths and those too poor to afford it should have their travel subsidised by the taxpayer. Under the scheme, British pensioners could be given cut-price trips... Read more

What is a derivative, anyway?

Last updated on: April 22, 2010 at 5:00 am   By Gene Veith

Our recent financial meltdown was caused in part by investments in derivatives.  Therefore, the federal government is working on a way to regulate the things.  But what is a derivative?  Here is a helpful explanation: In its simplest form, a derivative is a financial agreement between two entities that depends on something that occurs in the future, such as the performance of an underlying asset. That underlying asset could be a stock, a bond, a currency or a commodity. For... Read more

Books of influence

An interesting article on how most of our presidents have been big readers, and how the books they read have influenced their policies:  For Obama and past presidents, the books they read shape policies and perceptions.  Truman’s reading about ancient history led to his support of the founding of Israel.  Kennedy and Johnson read books on the poor in American that led to the “war on poverty.”  Nixon pored over histories in working through his foreign policies.  Jimmy Carter got... Read more

And now, a tea party of the left

What conservative populists are doing to the Republican party, liberal populists are starting to do to Democrats: A political rebellion is brewing inside an old funeral home near the state Capitol here. Frustrated liberals and labor organizers are taking aim at the Democratic Party, rushing to gather enough signatures to start a third party that they believe could help oust three Democratic congressmen. Now, some of Obama’s supporters are mounting a defiant strike against the president’s party. The nascent third... Read more

The salty will lose its savor

The government, through the Food and Drug Administration, is planning to issue regulations with the force of law limiting how much salt products can contain.  The plan is to implement phased reductions of salt so as to gradually wean consumers off of sodium chloride. The Food and Drug Administration is planning an unprecedented effort to gradually reduce the salt consumed each day by Americans, saying that less sodium in everything from soup to nuts would prevent thousands of deaths from... Read more

Outlawing the National Day of Prayer

Last updated on: April 20, 2010 at 6:00 am   By Gene Veith

So presidents going all the way back to George Washington have been unconstitutional for all these years. Who knew? A federal judge in Wisconsin declared Thursday that the US law authorizing a National Day of Prayer is unconstitutional. US District Judge Barbara Crabb said the federal statute violates the First Amendment’s prohibition on government endorsement of religion. She issued a 66-page decision and enjoined President Obama from issuing an executive order calling for the celebration of a National Day of... Read more

Some Texas school districts are bringing back corporal punishment into the classroom: In an era when students talk back to teachers, skip class and wear ever-more-risque clothing to school, one central Texas city has hit upon a deceptively simple solution: Bring back the paddle. Most school districts across the country banned paddling of students long ago. Texas sat that trend out. Nearly a quarter of the estimated 225,000 students who received corporal punishment nationwide in 2006, the latest figures available,... Read more

Nondiscrimination policies that discriminate

Last updated on: April 19, 2010 at 6:00 am   By Gene Veith

Jonathan Turley offers some good analysis of a case that goes before the Supreme Court today on whether campus religious groups can require their members to follow that religion’s teachings: Can a nondiscrimination policy be discriminatory? That question, bordering on legal Zen, will be before the Supreme Court on Monday when the justices hear oral arguments in a case brought by Christian law students at a public university in California. The students found themselves on the wrong side of a... Read more
