Strasburg lives up to the hype
Last updated on: June 9, 2010 at 6:00 am By Gene Veith
The Washington National’s pitching phenom, Stephen Strasburg made his big-league debut. The results were jaw-dropping. In the 7 innings he pitched, he struck out 14! He walked 0. He gave up four hits, including a two-run homer, but he took the win, 5-2. The kid struck out each of the Pittsburg Pirates starters. He struck out the final 7 batters he faced. No Nationals pitcher has ever struck out so many. Few rookies have put on such a dominating performance... Read more

Big night for conservative women
Last updated on: June 9, 2010 at 5:36 am By Gene Veith
Yesterday featured a primary election throughout the country. Many incumbents, though not all, were voted down by their own party members. The tea-party of conservative populists scored big. The tea-party equivalent on the left seeking to defeat Democratic moderates didn’t do so well: Arkansas incumbent senator Blanche Lincoln turned back an opponent heavily funded by labor unions. Conservative women in general were the big winners of the night. Nikki Haley has won more votes than the incumbent in a vicious... Read more

May Israel defend itself at all?
Last updated on: June 9, 2010 at 5:00 am By Gene Veith
A disturbing column by Charles Krauthhammer on the global response to Israel’s blockade of Gaza: Oh, but weren’t the Gaza-bound ships on a mission of humanitarian relief? No. Otherwise they would have accepted Israel’s offer to bring their supplies to an Israeli port, be inspected for military materiel and have the rest trucked by Israel into Gaza — as every week 10,000 tons of food, medicine and other humanitarian supplies are sent by Israel to Gaza. Why was the offer... Read more

I dreamed this
Last updated on: June 8, 2010 at 12:56 pm By Gene Veith
The night before my step-mother-in-law’s funeral, I dreamed that I was at the funeral and ran into an old friend of mine, Gary. We stepped outside and smoked cigars. The next day, which would be last Thursday, we were at the funeral luncheon. I stepped outside and saw Gary. He was smoking a cigar. Meeting Gary was not the weird part. He was married to one of my step-mother-in-law’s daughters. We worked together on a construction crew back when we... Read more

The left’s case against Obama
Last updated on: June 8, 2010 at 12:01 pm By Gene Veith
Many liberals are turning on President Obama’s administration and the Democratic-held congress. From the Associated Press: Progressive activists who helped elect Barack Obama president complained on Monday that the administration and congressional Democrats have been too timid and too willing to compromise. Even though Obama’s major first-term achievement — an overhaul of the nation’s health care system — passed without a single Republican vote, progressive leaders who gathered in Washington criticized the president for failing to create a government-run insurance... The sacramental imagination
Last updated on: June 7, 2010 at 11:53 am By Gene Veith
A common notion in studies of Christianity and the arts is “the sacramental imagination.” It goes like this: Christians with a high view of the sacraments believe that spiritual realities are mediated by means of physical things. Christian artists with those beliefs, therefore, can easily employ images derived from the material world in order to communicate their faith. This is also why so many Christian artists are Roman Catholics, a church whose sacramental theology encourages this kind of imagination. That... Read more

From right-to-die to involuntary euthanasia
Last updated on: June 7, 2010 at 11:13 am By Gene Veith
Pass right-to-die legislation, allowing patients to choose physician-assisted-suicide, and what do you get? In Belgium, at least, doctors are killing almost as many patients who do not ask to die as those who do. See Wesley J. Smith, Almost as Many Non Voluntary Euthanasia Deaths in Belgium as Voluntary » First Thoughts | A First Things Blog. Read more

The leftist/Islamist alliance
Last updated on: June 7, 2010 at 11:02 am By Gene Veith
Dennis Mitzner tries to explain the odd alliance between the hard-core left and Islamic jihadists (evident especially in Europe), despite the latter’s attitude towards women, homosexuality, etc., etc. An excerpt: Since the left views Muslims as part of their struggle against Western hegemony, they are given a pass on their religiosity. Islam does not threaten the left in the same fashion as Judaism and Christianity. They look at Christians and Jews and see wealth; they look at Muslims and see... Read more

Funerals
Last updated on: June 3, 2010 at 11:14 pm By Gene Veith
A funeral can be a great help to people who are grieving. A funeral can also make matters worse. A funeral can be built around the strong Word of God, helping people face death, while serving as a catalyst whereby sorrow is resolved into hope. Or it can open all the wounds, cause people to cry even more, and stir up their sadness. The first kind of funeral works by cultivating faith. The second kind works by creating a... Read more
