Iraq combat will end August 31

So says the president: President Obama outlined the changing U.S. role in Iraq on Monday to an organization of disabled veterans, saying that beginning next month the more-than-seven-year war effort will change from a primarily military enterprise to a diplomatic one. “The hard truth is we have not seen the end of American sacrifice in Iraq,” Obama told the Disabled American Veterans group in a speech in Atlanta. “But make no mistake, our commitment in Iraq is changing–from a military... Read more

Ayn Rand and the virtue of evil

Last updated on: August 3, 2010 at 5:14 am   By Gene Veith

Joe Carter tries to think what he ever saw in Ayn Rand, who despised Christianity and held that the only virtue is selfishness. He cites a new biography that details how bad she was, though at least consistent with her assumptions: She announced that the world was divided between a small minority of Supermen who are productive and “the naked, twisted, mindless figure of the human Incompetent” who, like the Leninists, try to feed off them. He is “mud to... Read more

The Teutonic Knights

Last updated on: August 3, 2010 at 5:00 am   By Gene Veith

We’ve talked about the Hospitallers, aka the Knights of Malta and–in Bo Giertz’s novel by that name translated by Cranach commenter Bror Erickson–the Knights of Rhodes.  You have already heard of the Knights Templar, with their mysterious and allegedly occultic secrets and their alleged ties to the Masons.  There is also another order of monks who fought wars:  the Teutonic Knights.  Now they are in the news, as the remains of their original Grand Masters have been discovered in the... Read more

How atheists are like Protestants

An anthropologist, Alex Golub, beginning with descriptions of the atheists’ new unbaptism rite (which involves a hair dryer), tosses off this delicious line: One side believes it possesses an infallible book written by an omnipotent author with a huge beard with completely explains the dynamics all living things on earth. The other side believes in the literal truth of the bible. via Bible/Darwin: Here Comes The Hair Dryers | Savage Minds. Here is some more: The genius of the hair-dryer... Read more

Inception & dreams

Last updated on: August 2, 2010 at 5:15 am   By Gene Veith

Upon the recommendation of many of you, we saw “Inception.” What I like are complicated, mutli-leveled, twisting plots. This qualified. So thank you for the suggestion. My one problem with the movie is that it depicted dreams, and yet nothing in those depictions was remotely dream-like! There was none of that combination of seeming logic and actual illogic, no shifting of place, no fantasy, no archetypes. “Alice in Wonderland” does a good job of recreating what dreams are like (the... Read more

More thoughts on Anne Rice

Last updated on: August 2, 2010 at 5:00 am   By Gene Veith

Thanks for the good discussion on the weekend’s post about Anne Rice rejecting Christianity, while still saying that she believes in Christ. The comments include more quotations from her about what she means by that, as well as thought-provoking insights from all sides. I was heartened that she has apparently agreed to consider Rod Rosenbladt’s presentation “The Gospel for Those Broken by the Church” [see the sidebar on this blog for New Reformation Press]. I definitely think she is broken... Read more

Anne Rice

Anne Rice, the author of literate vampire novels who embraced Christianity, now says that she is no longer a Christian: I quit being a Christian. I’m out. In the name of Christ, I refuse to be anti-gay. I refuse to be anti-feminist. I refuse to be anti-artificial birth control. I refuse to be anti-Democrat. I refuse to be anti-secular humanism. I refuse to be anti-science. I refuse to be anti-life. In the name of Christ, I quit Christianity and being... Read more

Movie drought

I don’t know how long it’s been since I’ve been to an actual movie theater. Summer is my time to go to movies, but I haven’t been to any. None of the recent releases have seemed remotely interesting to me. Long airplane trips with entertainment consoles have given me a chance to catch up a little, but what disappointment. “Clash of the Titans” was Greek mythology filtered through the new atheism. The theme was “Man must become free of the... Read more

Oil spill damage exaggerated?

Last updated on: July 30, 2010 at 5:30 am   By Gene Veith

This is not from an anti-environmentalist skeptic but from Time Magazine: The Deepwater Horizon explosion was an awful tragedy for the 11 workers who died on the rig, and it’s no leak; it’s the biggest oil spill in U.S. history. It’s also inflicting serious economic and psychological damage on coastal communities that depend on tourism, fishing and drilling. But so far — while it’s important to acknowledge that the long-term potential danger is simply unknowable for an underwater event that... Read more

The Wet Blanket Movement

Last updated on: July 29, 2010 at 6:00 am   By Gene Veith

Joe Carter at First Things is leery of the Tea Party Movement, saying that true conservatives don’t like enthusiasm or protest demonstrations. He proposes an alternative program to limit government:  The Wet Blanket Movement.  Unfortunately, he says, the proper leader of this movement is dead.  That would be Calvin Coolidge.  He quotes Walter Lippman on the great man: Mr. Coolidge’s genius for inactivity is developed to a very high point. It is far from being an indolent inactivity. It is... Read more
