Britain shrinks government
Last updated on: August 20, 2010 at 5:00 am By Gene Veith
As our government is trying to be more “European” in asserting government control over the economy, Europe is going in the other direction. Earlier, we looked at what Germany has done to prosper economically while the United States flounders. Now Great Britain, in a coalition government of conservatives and moderates, is launching on a great experiment to shrink government and empower individuals. From The Washington Post: The Obama administration might be reasserting the government’s place in American life. But on... Read more

Combat troops are gone from Iraq
Last updated on: August 19, 2010 at 6:00 am By Gene Veith
Does this mean the Iraq war is over? The last American combat brigade in Iraq has left the country, the US military has said. The 4th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division began crossing by land into Kuwait in the early hours of Thursday morning, said a spokesman. The US combat mission in Iraq is scheduled to end on 31 August. But the Pentagon has not confirmed that the move marks an early end to combat operations. Most of the 4,000... Read more

A classical musician on heavy-metal singers
Last updated on: August 19, 2010 at 5:50 am By Gene Veith
Claudia Friedlander is a classical musician and voice teacher. She was asked her opinion of five different male heavy metal singers. (The link also plays samples of the music that she was analyzing.) Notice that classical aesthetics contains principles that apply to every kind of music, without necessarily demolishing the more popular genres: On Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden: I have nothing but admiration for this singer. Listen how he starts off with a soft growl, then moves seamlessly into... Read more

What China must learn from America
Last updated on: August 19, 2010 at 5:30 am By Gene Veith
The prominent Chinese general Liu Yazhou, possibly at great risk to himself, is calling upon his country to adopt American-style democracy and rule of law: A Chinese general has warned his conservative Communist Party masters and People’s Liberation Army colleagues that China can either embrace American-style democracy or accept Soviet-style collapse. While officers of similar rank have been rattling their sabres against US aircraft carriers in the Yellow and South China seas, General Liu Yazhou says China’s rise depends on... Read more

Facebook connections
Last updated on: August 18, 2010 at 6:00 am By Gene Veith
I am one of the few people left in the world who does not have a Facebook account. Maybe I’ll get one one of these days. Right now, it seems like just one more thing to check. Still, I appreciate its potential for facilitating human interaction. Commenter Todd wrote me this message: In reading the comments about the decline of phone conversations, Facebook came up. I realized that, though I am friends with a few Cranach commenters on Facebook (Bror,... Read more

The nature of marriage
Last updated on: August 18, 2010 at 5:30 am By Gene Veith
Philosopher Stephen J. Heaney discusses the nature of marriage in the context of the same-sex marriage debate: Marriage is often characterized today as follows: 1) two people 2) who love each other 3) want to perform sexual acts together, so 4) they consent to combine their lives sexually, materially, economically 5) with the endorsement of the community. Since same-sex couples can meet the first four criteria, how can society refuse the fifth? It is easy to see why this would be... Read more

Christianity fever
Last updated on: August 18, 2010 at 5:00 am By Gene Veith
Peter Berger is one of the major sociologists of our day. A Lutheran Christian of the ELCA variety, he discusses the explosion of Christianity in still-Communist China, a phenomenon described in that country as “Christianity fever”: The most reliable source for religious demography is the World Christian Database, headed by Todd Johnson, which has been counting Christian noses worldwide for many years now. Johnson and his associates claim that there were about one million Christians in China in 1970 (a... Read more

Ordination
Last updated on: August 17, 2010 at 6:00 am By Gene Veith
Well, I just got back from the ordination of my son-in-law, Ned Moerbe, and his installation as pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, Blackwell, Oklahoma (just a few miles from our ancestral farm outside of Tonkawa). It was a great occasion. I counted 15 pastors taking part. The circuit is far flung, including Stillwater (where Oklahoma State University is), Guthrie (where my wife grew up), and Alva (where I was born). It was very moving when Ned was ordained and then... Teachers good and bad
Last updated on: August 17, 2010 at 5:45 am By Gene Veith
The California teachers’ union is calling for a boycott of the L.A. Times for publishing an expose of teacher performance. Here are some of its findings: • Highly effective teachers routinely propel students from below grade level to advanced in a single year. There is a substantial gap at year’s end between students whose teachers were in the top 10% in effectiveness and the bottom 10%. The fortunate students ranked 17 percentile points higher in English and 25 points higher... Read more

Would proof of God eliminate Christianity?
Last updated on: August 17, 2010 at 5:10 am By Gene Veith
Joe Carter takes on an intriguing argument: Would evidence for God mean the end of atheism and Christianity? Yes, says Matt J. Rossano, a professor and department head of psychology at Southeastern Louisiana University. In a peculiar article at The Huffington Post, Rossano argues that scientific evidence for the existence of God is fatal to both the faith of the atheist and the believer. via Would Evidence for God Mean the End of Atheism and Christianity? » First Thoughts |...
