This is the day, 47 years ago, when John F. Kennedy was assassinated and C. S. Lewis died. Also Aldous Huxley, who wrote the prophetic dystopian novel Brave New World. So the day can be seen as something of a watershed–the end of political idealism, the beginning of the post-Christian age, the entry into a new dystopian age, the day the music died, etc. People of my generation remember where they were when they learned that Kennedy was shot. I... Read more

The terrorist's day in court

Last updated on: November 19, 2010 at 6:00 am   By Gene Veith

Ahmed Ghailani is a terrorist who killed 224 people.  But the first Guantanamo inmate to be tried in a civilian court was found not guilty of those murders, the result of his blowing up American embassies in Africa in 1998.  He was, though, convicted of conspiracy to destroy government property. Some of the evidence against him was reportedly obtained by torturing informers, so the judge ruled it inadmissible. That prosecutors were still able to pin the conspiracy charge–for destroying property,... Read more

So what about THIS debt-reduction plan?

Yet another bipartisan commission is proposing a plan to cut the federal deficit.  What do you think of this one?  From  co-chairs Pete Domenici and Alice Rivlin: To ensure a more robust recovery, we propose a one-year “payroll tax holiday” for 2011, suspending Social Security payroll taxes for employers and employees. We also would phase in the steps to reduce deficits and debt gradually beginning in 2012, so the economy will be strong enough to absorb them. We would stabilize... Read more

Not too much Islam, too little Christianity

Lutheran pastor’s kid Angela Merkel, now the chancellor of Germany, had some striking things to say about the immigration debate in that country: Chancellor Angela Merkel urged Germans debating Muslim integration to stand up more for Christian values, saying Monday the country suffered not from “too much Islam” but “too little Christianity.” Addressing her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party, she said she took the current public debate in Germany on Islam and immigration very seriously. As part of this debate,... Read more

One day is like a thousand years

Last updated on: November 18, 2010 at 6:00 am   By Gene Veith

I’ve been on the road, and the church I attended Sunday had as part of its Scripture reading this text: “But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day” (2 Peter 3:8). I had always thought of the last part of the verse as a good description of what it must be for God to be outside of time. But this time the... Read more

Old school journalist Ted Koppel lambastes both MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann and Fox News’s Bill O’Reilly, concluding with this: The commercial success of both Fox News and MSNBC is a source of nonpartisan sadness for me. While I can appreciate the financial logic of drowning television viewers in a flood of opinions designed to confirm their own biases, the trend is not good for the republic. It is, though, the natural outcome of a growing sense of national entitlement. Daniel Patrick... Read more

Religion blocks consumerism

Last updated on: November 18, 2010 at 5:00 am   By Gene Veith

In another odd experiment, it seems as if religious people are less susceptible to buying things according to their brand, which to secularists is often a means of enhancing status and self-worth: Prof. Ron Shachar of Tel Aviv University’s Leon Recanati Graduate School of Business Administration says that a consumer’s religiosity has a large impact on his likelihood for choosing particular brands. Comsumers who are deeply religious are less likely to display an explicit preference for a particular brand, while... Read more

Atheists' ad campaign will target the Bible

Last updated on: November 17, 2010 at 6:00 am   By Gene Veith

The Christmas season will mark a newly-aggressive campaign by an atheist organization to present the moral failings of the Bible: The American Humanist Association, both atheists and agnostics who think it is possible to lead a moral and ethical life without believing in a deity, rolls out its biggest ad campaign Friday night, a $200,000 splash with a TV spot during “Dateline,” followed by Metro and bus ads that will brighten the morning commute Monday. The group’s ad campaign this... Read more

The state bank solution

My brother put me onto the example of the North Dakota State Bank as a solution to our country’s financial woes: While the Fed continues playing parlor tricks to try and stimulate the economy, a much simpler method of igniting long-term economic growth and stability exists in North Dakota. Yes, North Dakota, a state operating with a surplus of cash and unemployment at 4%. In the early 1900’s the economy of North Dakota was agriculture-based, and the farmers there were... Read more

tODD, a long-time reader and commenter on this blog, told me that he was using Bible Gateway, that extremely useful site that allows you to find Bible passages from a wide array of translations, when he noticed that an NIV passage he was finding was different from the same NIV passage he learned as a child. He dug into the matter, and it turns out there is a new version of the NIV, with many quite different translations, that will... Read more
