Betraying Great Britain
Last updated on: February 8, 2011 at 5:48 am By Gene Veith
A bombshell comes out of Wikileaks. The Obama administration turned over secrets about England’s nuclear arsenal to the Russians: Information about every Trident missile the US supplies to Britain will be given to Russia as part of an arms control deal signed by President Barack Obama next week. Defence analysts claim the agreement risks undermining Britain’s policy of refusing to confirm the exact size of its nuclear arsenal. The fact that the Americans used British nuclear secrets as a bargaining... Read more

Green Bay’s strange way of celebrating
Last updated on: February 8, 2011 at 5:00 am By Gene Veith
By all accounts, the citizens of Green Bay, Wisconsin, celebrated the Packers’ Super Bowl victory by flooding out of their houses to embrace each other in jubilation. Also by honking their horns. And by flocking to Lambeau Field with snow shovels to dig out the stadium in preparation for a big welcome home to the team. But the fans didn’t overturn cars, set fires, fight each other, or smash store windows. What’s with that? Don’t they know how cities are... Read more

Packers rule!
Last updated on: February 7, 2011 at 6:00 am By Gene Veith
It wasn’t pretty, but it sure was exciting. The Packers won the Super Bowl, beating the Steelrs 31-25. That means Rich Shipe won our contest with an amazing prediction of 31-24. (Who could have guessed that the Steelers would go for two?) He has a great future in Vegas, if the church he is pastoring will give him a leave of absence. (Rich, how did you get so close? What was your reasoning?) So Rich wins 15 minutes of fame. ... Read more

The 2nd biggest denomination: Nondenominationalism
Last updated on: February 7, 2011 at 5:45 am By Gene Veith
Russell D. Moore, dean of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, writes in the Wall Street Journal about nondenominationalism: Are we witnessing the death of America’s Christian denominations? Studies conducted by secular and Christian organizations indicate that we are. Fewer and fewer American Christians, especially Protestants, strongly identify with a particular religious communion—Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, Pentecostal, etc. According to the Baylor Survey on Religion, nondenominational churches now represent the second largest group of Protestant churches in America, and they are also the... Ronald Reagan as actor
Last updated on: February 7, 2011 at 5:29 am By Gene Veith
Yesterday would have been the 100th birthday of Ronald Reagan. In the articles commemorating the day, it is evident that even liberal scholars have come to appreciate the man and his presidency. The Washington Post published a feature on “Five Myths about Ronald Reagan” by his biographer Edmund Morris. I got a kick out of this one: 1. He was a bad actor. Well, yes and no. Most of the movies he made as a Warner Bros. contract player are... Read more

Your forum for the Super Bowl
Last updated on: February 4, 2011 at 6:00 am By Gene Veith
This is the place for Super Bowl predictions, analysis, and trash talk between Packer and Steeler fans. I’ll start: We’ve got two storied teams from blue-collar towns that are actually very much alike, especially when it comes to their awesome defenses. Therefore the Packers will smelt the Steelers! 17-14. Anyone who predicts the correct score will win 15 minutes of fame on this blog. Read more

The views on Egypt
Last updated on: February 4, 2011 at 5:45 am By Gene Veith
So neoconservatives are supporting the uprising in Egypt as evidence of the universal yearning for democratic values. Pro-Israel conservatives, though, are hoping Mubarak holds on to power, since a democratic government might turn against Israel and support jihadi terrorists. Paleo-conservatives are thinking the revolution doesn’t concern us one way or the other. Most mainstream Republicans are supporting the President, in the name of that once-honored principle of politics stopping at the border and the need to show a united front... Read more

CyberTyranny
Last updated on: February 4, 2011 at 5:14 am By Gene Veith
Egypt’s strongman Hosni Mubarak has cut off his country from the internet in an effort to thwart the protesters’ ability to organize and share information. In other popular democratic uprisings, such as the recent one in Iran, Facebook, Twitter , and other online sites have proven critical. And yet, as this article shows, those same technologies are being used by tyrants to crush dissent: The Iranian police eagerly followed the electronic trails left by activists, which assisted them in making... Law of diminishing returns
Last updated on: February 3, 2011 at 6:00 am By Gene Veith
We spend more on health care than ever before, but we are less healthy. We spend more on education than ever, but our children are poorly educated. And in all the ups and downs of the economy of the last decades, we are about where we were in the 1970s. Also, the internet has had far less impact on productivity and economic growth than we think. Our economy is plagued by the law of diminishing returns. So says economist Tyler... Read more

A law to visit your parents
Last updated on: February 3, 2011 at 5:44 am By Gene Veith
China, for all of its seeming success, is also having its problems. But it is trying to address them: Under a proposal submitted last Monday by the Civil Affairs Ministry to China’s State Council, adult children would be required by law to regularly visit their elderly parents. If they do not, parents can sue them. . . . Concerns about how to care for China’s older people are growing as the nation’s population rapidly gets older, wealthier and more urbanized.... Read more
