With her record of opposing religious exemptions, punishing prolifers, and seeking to require pro-lifers to promote and perform abortions, Kamala Harris is one of the most aggressively pro-abortion and anti-religious liberty career politicians in American history. Read more

Postliberalism

Graedon H. Zorzi gives a very cogent explanation of "Postliberalism," the kind of conservatism J. D. Vance advocates, one centered on community, family, virtue, and the common good. That might be worthwhile as an ethos and a set of policies. But as a longterm system of government, it falls short. Read more

J. D. Vance, the New Right, & the New Christian Politics

Last updated on: July 16, 2024 at 9:21 pm   By Gene Veith

J. D. Vance, the Republican Vice Presidential nominee, has been called "the standard bearer of the New Right." And "perhaps the most eloquent champion of a new Christian approach to politics." So how is that different from the Old Right and from the old Christian approach to politics? And which is better? Read more

A Parallel Economy

Last updated on: July 13, 2024 at 5:43 pm   By Gene Veith

Some conservatives are trying to form a "parallel economy" as an alternative to that of the woke corporations. Some Christians are grabbing onto the idea, wanting to do business only with fellow Christians. David Bahnsen shows why a separate economy is impossible and theologically problematic. But most ventures associated with the concept are just trying to create alternative products, which is quite in line with the overall free market economy. Read more

Second Thoughts on the Acting Vocation

Last updated on: July 13, 2024 at 3:43 pm   By Gene Veith

John Corbett found fame and fortune in his successful 30-year-old career as an actor. But now he says that he picked the wrong thing to do with his life. Acting is just reciting words other people wrote for him. It is not creative, he says, or fulfilling. He makes some good points about a profession the public glorifies too much, but he needs to understand the doctrine of vocation. Read more

“Neither Party Is Pro-Life”?

Last updated on: July 14, 2024 at 4:33 pm   By Gene Veith

For the last ten Republican National conventions, covering a span of 40 years, the party platform has included a plank opposing abortion.  Not this time. Instead of the "right to life," the 2024 platform stands for the right of states to decide the issue. One observer says, "For the first time, neither party is pro life." Does that mean pro-life voters might just as well vote for the Democrats? Not at all. Read more

Why Is Trump So Hated–and Beloved?

Last updated on: July 16, 2024 at 8:02 am   By Gene Veith

Why do conservatives like Donald Trump so much, and why do liberals despise him so much?  That sounds like a silly question.  But Trump is actually hard to classify politically.  Some of Trump's policies come right out of the liberals' playbook and flatly oppose conservative orthodoxy.  And yet liberals give him no credit and conservatives support him no matter what he believes. The reason he is both popular and reviled is Trump the man. Read more
