Beyond the Political Binary

Last updated on: August 11, 2024 at 3:21 pm   By Gene Veith

Our choice between Harris and Trump offers us a "political binary."  We have a two-party system, so our politics exist in two and only two poles.  No wonder we are, as they say, polarized. But the choice between Left and Right excludes the convictions of many, if not most, Americans. Research from the State Policy Network identifies seven political segments, which actually have much in common. Read more

“Who Proceeds from the Father and the Son”

Last updated on: August 14, 2024 at 6:48 am   By Gene Veith

When we confess the Nicene Creed, we say that the Holy Spirit, "proceeds
from
the
Father
and
 the
Son."  But Eastern Orthodox churches say that the Holy Spirit just "proceeds from the Father." That difference--known as the filioque, the Latin for "and the Son"-- led to the split between Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy. Now the Lutheran World Federation wants to drop the filioque. What this means. Read more

A Lutheran Vice-President?

Kamala Harris's vice presidential running mate, Minnesota governor Tim Walz, is a Lutheran. This will doubtless attract attention to the rest of us Lutherans, but those of us with a confessional theology will need to get used to explaining that we are not THAT kind of Lutheran. Read more

Is America an Idea or a People?

Last updated on: August 2, 2024 at 8:38 pm   By Gene Veith

After World War II and during the Cold War, it was said that America is not a nation based on ethnicity, as in the European nations, nor on race, as in the recently defeated Fascist nations.  Rather, America is based on ideas as articulated in the Declaration of Independence and embodied in the Constitution with its Bill of Rights. Today, a counter-movement insists that America is a culture and a people. Which is it? Read more

Forced Criminality

Last updated on: August 1, 2024 at 7:08 pm   By Gene Veith

We have become so used to scams--on the phone, email, and social media--that we hardly pay attention to them any more. But who are the scammers? Criminals to be sure.  But in some cases, they are also trafficking victims--slave labor bought, sold, and abused.  Law enforcement calls it "forced criminality." Read more
