"Contemporary Western cultures insist consciousness resides exclusively in our brains, but an abundance of recent scientific research indicates otherwise." So says Creighton med school professor Charles Camosy, who argues that this research is in accord with the Christian understanding of the soul. Read more

A few weeks ago, we criticized a key part of Kamala Harris's economic program in our post Why Price Controls Cannot Work.  Now I'd like to criticize a key part of Donald Trump's economic program:  imposing a 10%-20% tariff on all imports, and a 60% tariff for all goods made in China. Read more

"Everyone has a vocation, but not all have jobs," observes economist Anne Bradley. "Meaningful work, not just jobs, can happen inside the market where we buy and sell our labor and outside the market in our homes, neighborhoods, churches, and civic institutions; it all matters." Read more

Nostalgia Fixation and the End of Progressivism

Last updated on: September 7, 2024 at 7:28 pm   By Gene Veith

Have you noticed how many movies today are remakes of --almost always better--movies made years ago, or sequels of those old movies? This lack of freshness, this repetition of formulas, this relentless looking back for material rather than coming up with something original seems to be a syndrome that plagues nearly all of the arts. It's a sign of our cultural dead ends and the end of progressivism. It might also herald a renaissance around the corner. Read more

“Incomplete Religions”

Last updated on: September 7, 2024 at 12:51 pm   By Gene Veith

Many observers have noticed that when religion declines, other things--most noticably politics--rush in to fill the void. Joshua Mitchell contrasts "complete religions" that are universal in scope and in resolution and "incomplete religions" in which "Impure groups" are demonized and "pure groups" are exalted as being above reproach. Read more
