When offensive speech deserves defending

Last updated on: January 12, 2015 at 7:45 pm   By Gene Veith

Columnist Ross Douthat, a conservative Catholic, has an interesting and nuanced take on the Charlie Hebdo attacks, how purposefully offensive speech is wrong–and yet, if someone threatens to murder a person over it, that speech becomes something good, something that deserves defending. Claiming religious exemption without the religion

Last updated on: January 12, 2015 at 7:59 pm   By Gene Veith

The National Labor Relations Board has said that colleges, in general, must allow professors to join a union.  To objections by church-related institutions, the board said that religious institutions may be exempt only if its professors actively promote and carry out a distinctly religious mission.  If the professors in a church-related institution do NOT carry out that mission–as many church-related but only nominally Christian institutions make a point of saying–then they can not claim a religious exemption.   This poses a... Read more

Persecution rates

Open Doors has released statistics about the persecution of Christians in 2014:  how many Christians were killed because of their faith (double what it was last year, and triple what it was the year before that); the number of attacks on churches; and the different ways Christians are being persecuted (including “cultural marginalization”).  It also lists the top reasons (#1: militant Islam; #2: dictator paranoia; #3: organized corruption).  Also of interest is a ranking of the countries according to their... Read more

The French 9/11.

Last updated on: January 12, 2015 at 9:25 am   By Gene Veith

Islamic terrorists, having attacked the offices of the humor magazine Charlie Hebdo, killing twelve,  struck again in Paris, attacking t a Jewish kosher grocery store, killing four hostages.  The French held a huge rally Sunday–the largest in the history of that nation of popular uprisings–in support of the victims of the terrorists, and other European nations are reportedly reconsidering their openness to Islamic immigrants, many of whom have been flocking to fight with ISIS in Syria.  The French periodical Le... Read more

A perceptive review of our book on the Imagination

Last updated on: January 8, 2015 at 9:30 am   By Gene Veith

The always-interesting Greg Forster has written a very perceptive review of the new book I wrote with Matt Ristuccia:   Imagination Redeemed.  The best reviews not only tell about a book but contribute to the topics it raises, and this one certainly does this, thoughtfully extending the discussion of the role of the imagination in the life of the Christian.  (And, for the record, I even agree with his one criticism of our book, which zeroes in on something we did... Read more

Who wants to go to Germany in 2017?

Last updated on: January 8, 2015 at 9:39 am   By Gene Veith

In 2017, two years from now, we will be marking the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, occasioned by Martin Luther posting his 95 Theses.  There will be lots of festivities, especially at the Luther sites in Germany.  Those look to include performances of the opera and play about Katie Luther, the Reformer’s wife, which was commissioned and is performed by friend-of-this-blog Lori Lewis. She has proposed a symbolic Katherine von Bora/Lucas Cranach reunion tour (the artist being the one who... Read more

Terrorists avenge Muhammed cartoons

Remember that French magazine that, along with the one from Denmark that started the controversy, published cartoons that depicted the Muslim prophet Muhammed?  Terrorists attacked the Paris office of the humor magazine, Charlie Hebdo, which has continued to print satirical cartoons about Islam, killing the cartoonists, the editor, and 10 more.
