We now have a ray gun

The U.S. military is now deploying a weaponized laser.  It isn’t a Buck Rogers-style light pistol or a Star Trek phaser that  looks like a cell phone.  It looks like a telescope.  But it can zap enemies with perfect accuracy.  Its biggest potential, though, is as a defensive weapon.  Not only can it shoot down attacking aircraft and missiles.  Because it goes at the speed of light–since it is light–it can even destroy a mortar round. Also, whereas conventional artillery... Read more

Oscar nominations

The Academy Award nominations have  been announced, and they are already proving controversial.  For example, how could The Lego Movie not get nominated for best animated feature?  “Everything Is Awesome” from that movie did get nominated for best song, but you do not want that earworm to win, lest it drive the population further into madness. I’ve seen only a few of these (which is one of the complaints, that many of these are obscure art house type films, rather... Read more

The “big questions” of vocation

Last updated on: January 16, 2015 at 11:19 am   By Gene Veith

The Faith and Work channel at Patheos is sponsoring a symposium with other blogs interested in the subject.  That would have to include us at the Cranach institute, since one of the major themes here is the doctrine of vocation.  The topic is the “big questions” of vocation, as raised by the quotations posted here.  Interestingly, the writers quoted are all from the Roman Catholic tradition, but I think the struggles they are articulate are common to evangelicals and other... Read more

A “heavenly tourist” takes back his claims

Last updated on: January 14, 2015 at 3:38 pm   By Gene Veith

There are a number of books in the genre of what has been called “Heavenly tourism.”  They tell about someone who died, went to Heaven, and came back to tell the tale.  Now the boy featured in The Boy Who Came Back from Heaven, then 6, now 17, has recanted his story.  He says that he now believes in the sufficiency of Scripture over personal visions and that he was just trying to get attention.   After the jump, his... Read more

Why do the winners riot?

Last updated on: January 13, 2015 at 5:37 pm   By Gene Veith

Ohio State beat Oregon to win the collegiate football championship, the first one under the new playoff system. Question:  Why in America do fans of the winners of big games riot, setting fires, breaking things, threatening cops?  In other countries, sports violence is a problem, but my impression is that it’s usually losers and fans who feel cheated who start tearing up things. To switch to the NFL, I don’t think Detroit fans rioted when the penalty flags against Dallas... Read more

Beware the leap second?

On June 30, an extra second will be added to the Bureau of Standard’s atomic clocks.  This is so that our clocks will align more precisely with the rotation and orbit of the Earth.  The fear is that this will throw off the world’s computers, and, particularly, the programs that run the internet. Last time this happened, in 2012, it did throw off a number of Unix-based websites.  Google has a fix for its sites, but many people are nervous,... Read more

Two songs, two kinds of piety

On the road over the holidays, I heard on the radio these two songs, one right after the other.  It occurred to me that they represent two different kinds of piety, two different kinds of “relationships with Jesus Christ.”  Listen to them after the jump.  What’s the difference?  (more…) Read more

When offensive speech deserves defending

Columnist Ross Douthat, a conservative Catholic, has an interesting and nuanced take on the Charlie Hebdo attacks, how purposefully offensive speech is wrong–and yet, if someone threatens to murder a person over it, that speech becomes something good, something that deserves defending.
