Two more planets in our Solar System?

Last updated on: January 20, 2015 at 8:44 pm   By Gene Veith

Pluto has been demoted from its planet status, though some dispute that.  But astronomers have found evidence that there may be two actual planets beyond Pluto. If they are definitively discovered, what should we call them?  The names should be classical to fit with the others.  I say name one Athena, after the goddess of wisdom, since wisdom is also elusive and hard to detect.  And let’s  name the other one Pluto, so that we’ll once again have a planet... Read more

Anthony Sacramone, no mean satirist himself, shows how a religion that is being attacked by satire should respond:  with satire.  And he gives the example of one of the great apologists of the Early Church:   Tertullian. (more…) Read more

Letting kids walk home as child neglect

Last updated on: January 20, 2015 at 1:26 pm   By Gene Veith

A 10-year old-boy and his 6-year-old sister were walking home from a park in an affluent Maryland suburb.  The police stopped them and are now investigating their parents for child neglect. The parents are said to be part of the “free-range” parenting movement.  But I walked seven blocks to and from school from the time I was in the first grade, aged six.  And once I could ride a bike, the whole town was my playground.   My parents, who were... Read more

Tonight’s State of the Union address

Last updated on: January 19, 2015 at 9:18 pm   By Gene Veith

Tonight, President Obama will give the annual State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress beginning at 9:00 p.m. EST.  The previews suggest that the president will put forward a number of liberal fantasies–raise taxes, offer free community college–that have absolutely no chance of passing in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives and the Republican-controlled Senate. But let’s see what he has to say.  Feel free to live-blog the speech here by commenting on it as it unfolds.... Read more

A narrowed religious liberty vs. erotic liberty

Last updated on: January 18, 2015 at 5:06 pm   By Gene Veith

Religious liberty, Al Mohler observes, is being restricted to private, unexpressed inner feelings and to what happens within the walls of a church.  Whereas traditionally, religions liberty extended to convictions that apply to external behavior and views about society.  But today religious views about how a person lives his or her life in the world are  increasingly are being outlawed and punished.  Dr. Mohler also gives a name to the specific conflict we are seeing today:  religious liberty vs. erotic... Read more

Most public school kids are poor

Last updated on: January 18, 2015 at 5:06 pm   By Gene Veith

Over half of the students in America’s public schools–51% overall, but in many states the number is much higher–are from families below the poverty line. Some will say that this is because the middle class has abandoned public education, what with homeschooling, parochial and other Christian schools, and other private institutions.  But why are so many middle class families not sending their children to public schools anymore?  What could public schools do to bring them back? Martin Luther King, Jr., on Vocation

Last updated on: January 18, 2015 at 9:46 pm   By Gene Veith

In honor of Martin Luther King Day, I offer you something he said about vocation: If a man is called to be a streetsweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, here lived a great streetsweeper who did his job well. via Martin Luther King, Jr. Quotes, Page 2. Read more

As I said in my own contribution, Patheos has put together a symposium on vocation, involving blogs on the Faith & Work channel and the Evangelical channel.  Since Luther’s doctrine of vocation is a major theme of this the Cranach blog, I took part, and I invite you too to join the discussion.  This may introduce you to other blogs you’d like to follow, and since together we have thought long and hard about these issues here, I hope you... Read more

The Conflict of Iconoclasts

Last updated on: January 15, 2015 at 10:14 am   By Gene Veith

France is holding huge rallies for free speech after the Charlie Hebdo murders, but they have arrested a comedian for his antisemitic speech.  Now the Pope, while condemning the terrorist attack, is underscoring that mocking religion is wrong in itself.  Issues of free speech are apparently more complicated than is often assumed. Meanwhile, the sold-out new issue of the satirical magazine that was attacked makes clear its distinct ideological position, namely, a militant atheism.  The editors say how they laughed... Read more
