T.S. Eliot as inventor of the Hipster

Literary scholar Karen Swallow Prior is kind enough to credit me for mentoring her through graduate school.  I’m proud to see that she has become a “public intellectual,” writing regularly for both Christianity Today and The Atlantic.  You have got to read her essay about how the whole mindset of the hipster is captured in T. S. Eliot’s “The Lovesong of J. Alfred Prufrock.” (more…) Read more

Vaccination and choice

An outbreak of measles that started in Disneyland is being blamed on parents who do not believe in vaccinating their children.  These folks, who come from both sides of the political spectrum, fear a link–first raised by scientists but then retracted– between vaccination and autism, or they believe vaccination is unnatural like genetic engineering, or they don’t believe the government should mandate their children’s medical treatment, etc. (more…) Read more

The case for a North American century

Last updated on: February 3, 2015 at 7:35 pm   By Gene Veith

Many have been saying that  America is in decline, that our political, cultural, and economic contributions are slipping. China, some say, is the up-and-coming nation.  Others say that the age of the dominant world power is over. But an op-ed piece by former General David Petraeus and Brookings Institute researcher Michael O’Hanlon say that the United States, in partnership with Canada and Mexico, has economic and demographic advantages over all comers that may make for a “North American Century.” (more…) Read more

Hear Alexander Graham Bell

In this age of smart phones, we should honor the smartness of Alexander Graham Bell, who not only invented the telephone but made many other contributions to audio technology by figuring out how to translate sound waves into electronic signals.  Now researchers have discovered and restored the first and only recording of Bell’s voice, dated 1885.  Listen to it after the jump. What caused the housing bubble

Last updated on: February 2, 2015 at 7:02 pm   By Gene Veith

The collapse of the housing market a few years ago was caused, reportedly, by predatory lending practices on people who couldn’t really afford to buy a house, coupled with shady investment instruments from the world of high finance.  But a new study is questioning that conventional wisdom.  Most of the people with bad loans turn out to be middle class and high income folks, with very few poor people involved.   The real problem, as Robert Samuelson reports, was unbridled... Read more

Marijuana without the high

Last updated on: February 2, 2015 at 7:02 pm   By Gene Veith

Lots of people have been hailing the medical uses of marijuana, leading a number of states to legalize the drug if you have a prescription.  Now Israeli researchers (Israel being the world’s leader in research into medical marijuana) has developed a strain that gives the medical benefits without that unfortunate side effect of the “high.” Do you think this product will catch on in medical marijuana circles?  I say, NO, are you kidding?  Except, perhaps, as a medicine for children... Read more

The dissolution of religious institutions

Last updated on: February 1, 2015 at 6:42 pm   By Gene Veith

In an article about a prominent non-denominational pastor who has decided that he needs to go to seminary, the writer, Michelle Boorstein, discusses  non-denominational churches as an example of the larger phenomenon of “the dissolution of religious structures.” Now we usually think of the decline of religious institutions in our culture in terms of fewer people going to church, the rise in the number of “nones,” the general climate of secularism, etc.  But this suggests that Christians too are complicit... Read more

The Eight Human Truths of Impulse

Last updated on: February 1, 2015 at 6:44 pm   By Gene Veith

Candy sales have been soaring ever since marketers started putting their wares by checkout counters.  Such “impulse buying” increases the longer customers have to wait in line to get to the cash register.  Now, though, self-service checkout, online retailing, and other technological developments mean that consumers are spending less time in checkout lines, which manifests itself in less impulse buying and a problem for the snack industry. Hershey’s, though, is planning new ways to sell its candy.  And it is... Read more
