Lent and Ash Wednesday are NOT pagan relics (a rerun)

Last updated on: February 17, 2015 at 6:17 pm   By Gene Veith

Time to rerun a post from last year: Pastor Joseph Abrahamson dismantles the myth that Lent and its practices have pagan origins. An excerpt from his longer post on the subject: The ancient Church chose to keep a fast during the forty days before Passover/Easter to focus on repentance and the gift of the Resurrection at Easter. St. Athanasius, who led at the Council of Nicea to defeat Arianism—a denial of Christ being truly God and man in one person—was... Read more

“Baptism is not supposed to be nice”

The Church of England has decided to take out the part in the Baptism liturgy in which the candidate or sponsors answer the questions, “Do you renounce the Devil?  And all his works?”  British journalist Giles Fraser complains at the attempt to make Baptism nicer, reducing it to a sanitized middle class naming ceremony. Whatever happened to the working class?

When I was in college, I worked on a construction crew, and it did me a lot of good.  I developed a lot of respect for the guys I worked with, who worked with their backs and their hands with skills that were far beyond me.  Politicians used to talk quite a bit about “the working class,” also known as “blue collar workers.”  But no more.  Even liberal democrats are pushing policies that are supposed to help “the middle class.”... Read more

Presidents’ Day blues

So is it healthy in a democratic republic to have a Presidents’ Day but not a Congress Day or a Supreme Court Day?  Is our preoccupation with chief executives as heads of state–as well as the assumption of many that if we just get a good one, he or she will solve our problems–an atavistic throw-back to monarchy?  Rome ditched its Republic for the more efficient, more powerful political system headed by an Emperor.   Can you see America ever doing... Read more

“Fifty Shades” to revive sex in movies?

Last updated on: February 15, 2015 at 8:19 pm   By Gene Veith

Fifty Shades of Grey is a huge hit, despite terrible reviews, thanks to hordes of women who flocked to the sadomasochistic romance fantasy.  Now observers are saying that its success will inspire Hollywood to churn out more sex movies, after several decades of overly-explicit movies being box office poison. More martyrs for faith & freedom

ISIS now has a presence in Libya, and the group has beheaded 21 Coptic Christians from Egypt, a dramatic modern-day example of Christians dying for their faith reminiscent of early church martyrdom. Also, a Danish discussion of the free speech controversy–including one of the Danish cartoonists whose life was threatened a few years ago for his depictions of the Muslim prophet, but including also voices more sympathetic to the jihadists–was shot up by a terrorist, killing two and wounding five.... Read more

The Crusades, the Inquisition, and Protestants

President Obama told the National Prayer Breakfast that Christianity, like Islam today, has been used to justify violence, mentioning particularly the Crusades and the Inquisition, historical episodes that are always being brought up against Christians.  It’s kind of strange, though, for us heirs of the Reformation to be blamed for those particular incidents.
