“Unbroken”: the Christian cut

The movie version of Unbroken, about the trials of World War II hero Louis Zamperini, left out the account of his conversion to Christianity and his trip to Japan to forgive the ones who tortured him as a POW.  But now a new version of the movie is being released on video that supplements director Angelina Jolie’s film with documentary footage and interviews that tell the rest of the story. Drinking His cup, being baptized with His baptism

Our sermon for the beginning of Passiontide was Mark 10:32-45, the passage about James and John asking Jesus if they could sit on His right hand and His left when He comes into His kingdom.  I had studied this text extensively for what it teaches about authority and vocation (how authority is not to be used to “lord it over” others, but to serve those whom you have authority over).  But somehow I never noticed that the passage is also... Read more

Social Capital and the Opportunity Gap

More on Robert Putnam and his book Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis, on the class gap in raising children.  The Chronicle of Higher Education tells about how Putnam came upon his thesis and conducted his research.  The article also tells about the neo-traditional “Ozzie and Harriet” families that have come back in middle class families, even as working class families are often abandoning marriage altogether.  It also talks about the religious gap, with middle class families taking their kids... Read more

Whatever happened to working class families?

Robert Putnam’s book Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis continues to get attention.  Michael Gerson has a good discussion of its impact, excerpted and linked after the jump.  The problem being documented is that whereas a new traditionalism in middle class families is paying off in stronger marriages, better parenting, and successful young people,  in the working class–white no less than black– families are in a state of collapse, with more and more people refusing to get married at... Read more

From Big Brother to lots of Little Brothers

A review of two books on what today’s technology does to privacy quotes a useful metaphor from one of the authors.  George Orwell warned against “Big Brother,” an all-knowing government that wants to track your every move.  Today the bigger threat is from lots of “Little Brothers,” a multitude of corporations, companies, and online mechanisms that want to track your every move. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) declared that he is running for president, the first candidate to do so.  Making his announcement at Liberty University, Sen. Cruz said that he would abolish the IRS, Obamacare, and legalized abortion.  Is there any way Sen. Cruz, with his in-your-face conservatism, could win the election? (more…) Read more

Persecuted Christians who fight back

Last updated on: March 22, 2015 at 3:23 pm   By Gene Veith

Christians worldwide have been facing intense persecution.  But now some of them are fighting back.  Pakistani churches have been subject to periodic attacks for decades.  But last time that happened, when an attack on a worship service killed 14 and wounded 70, some 4,000 Christians staged a riot of their own, lynching two suspects.  Authorities are worried that Pakistan, already torn by conflicts between Sunni and Shi’ite Islamic militants, will descend into full-fledged religious war if the Christians get involved.... Read more

Americans who want everything

A major opinion poll has found that Americans want BOTH more government spending AND lower taxes.  Also legalized marijuana.  When it comes to religion, the poll shows the vast majority of Americans believe in God, with only 3% being atheists; and yet 21% say they have no religion. How can people who want EVERYTHING, including what is contradictory, govern themselves? (more…) Read more

The internet’s utopian libertarianism

Last updated on: March 22, 2015 at 8:34 pm   By Gene Veith

The Washington Post has a fascinating article about a manifesto written in 1996 entitled  A Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace.  (Click the link.  It’s worth reading.)  The piece is by John Perry Barlow, who articulated a utopian high-tech libertarianism that still influences the tech industry and internet culture.  His writing lauds the radical freedom and spiritual changes made possible in the cyberworld, and it is also deadset against any kind of big government, with its regulations and controls.
